teacup yorkie I'v been taking Gizmo around with us (ie to the mall and pet friendly malls and what not) and I'm so sick of getting asked if he is a teacup and how "aw I like them smaller" that actually kind idlers a woman have it who gave me a card for breeding "mini tea cup yorkies". I didn't mean to be mean but I feel that even ignorance has its limits especially when its hurting fur babies. Guess that's my vent. |
It is just the way so many women are - the smaller ones are cuter to them. My last Yorkie was only 3 lbs. but she was a runt from normal parents, normal little and she was a star wherever she went with all the women due to her tiny, fragile size. |
I didn't realize there was NOT such a thing either until joining this website. Now when I see it advertised anywhere it makes me sick! My Bella was the last one of her litter BECAUSE she was the runt! I thought that strange because most people want a "teacup". He said she would be on the smaller size around 4lbs full grown. Ha not quite, I got very lucky with her. She's 6 mos and already 5lbs! Believe me, anyone who thinks that even 5 lbs is too big is CRAZY! She is stil very tiny! I hope she reaches atleast 7 lbs! |

There are so many disreputable breeders selling tinies and calling them teacups that it is almost a losing battle. But we know the truth and when you know something you have to share with those that dont know |
I feel the same way, Belle is a little over 4lbs at 5 months old and she is SOOOO tiny. I can't wait til she gets bigger!!! The whole teacup tiny craze make me sick. |
We take louie to the outside mall,and so many people say he is soo big and he's 7 lbs. I think it because their not used to seeing a standard yorkies Their seeing yorkies from unreputable breeder that are so tiny its sad! |
I get asked the same questions and a lot of people have taken their phones out, wanted a picture of him and proceeded to ask who the breeder is because they TOO want a "teacup" yorkie! (Grrrrr :mad:) I am kind though and firmly inform them that my Oliver is not a teacup and that I am hopeful he will get bigger :D I also tell them that I have a wondeful breeder but she DOES NOT breed "teacups" as there is no such thing, but that if she wants a happy, healthy yorkie she's more than happy to give her a call :) Some people are just ignorant, I know I was before finding YT although I never wanted a dog that small. Common sense should tell you that's unhealthy. Oliver is 3.2 pounds but trust me is VERY healthy and I often wonder if he was a little PIG in another life :eek: He LOVES to eat!! My next response will be, if you want a pet that size buy a hamster! |

The members above stated themselves that people note the size range of yorkies. It's understandable, because there is a difference! A 2lb yorkie, 4lb yorkie & 7lb yorkie are noticeably different in size. Yes, it's just a couple of pounds, but on a small dog, makes an obvious difference in structure, face size, paw size, etc. I don't get what the big deal is when people state the obvious. |
It's not only breeders that use the term, teacup. It's everywhere...I've seen it mentioned on Animal Planet, in magazines, in sewing patterns, TV, etc. I don't get upset over the term, nor do I lecture people if they ask if Faith is a teacup. I figure I've got much bigger things to get upset over. |
I'm not saying so much that the term "teacup" bothers me.... it's more that there are people breeding dogs to purposely make them small. I love my baby no matter what size she grows to, I just wasn't looking for a "tiny". I would worry less if she was 6 or 7lbs. It really makes me sad to see the way some people are trying to cash in on our favorite breed with gimmicks and "rare colors" and breeding one runt to another to make the smallest dogs possible to sell for insane amounts of money. |

I feel if a dog is breed to be too small it is unhealthy and/or will live a shorter life. A standard yorkie or a yorkie who is larger than standard doesn't seam to have the health issues and usually are not breed to fit an image to get more money from the purchaser. |

I had to go to animal control on the north side of Flint yesterday to get Zoe's dog license. Somehow, I got back on the freeway heading in the wrong direction, but didn't realize I was going the wrong way for quite a few miles :rolleyes: Next thing, I see signs stating the Prime Outlets at Birch Run are just a couple of miles ahead. I didn't have my kwigybo bag with me cos I wasn't planning on going anywhere but get the dog license. So I popped Zoe in the front of my jacket. We only went in Banana Republic, Coach, & Ralph Lauren, where I made purchases. No one had a problem with her being there & she received lots of compliments:) I was feeling all stealth-like & sneaky...lol As I don't get up there much, I drove around to see if any new stores had opened. That's when I noticed "Doodle Dog Bakery". So, we parked & went in. They had all kinds of dog goodies & treats. I commented about my surprise at find a dog treat store there. The worker looked and me puzzled and said, "Why? It's a dog friendly shopping center." So much for me being all stealth-like & sneaky...:p |
I get asked all the time if Chloe is a teacup, it is really frustrating but I just learned to say No and move on. I only get annoyed when people Insist that she just has to be a teacup, oy! |

We have a chihuahua that weighs 6lbs. This is within the standard but so often people will look at him and tell me that they or someone they know has the cutiest "tea cup" chi. I am always very polite,but tell them, although the term "tea cup" is a well known term it is not an AKC recongnized standard. I get to educate them and at least send them away thinking. It is interesting that what used to be considered a "runt" and unacceptable is now a "tea cup" and what was considered a "mutt" is now considered a "designer breed". I dont get it. My first dog (many years ago) was a poodle that weighed in at 2lbs. She was purchased for me as a gift and was less expensive due to her size. I was told by our vet to enjoy her because she wouldn't see 5yrs,she passed at the age of 13yrs. She was my one true friend as I went through the teenaged years. |

right there with you sister, when people ask me if he is a teacup I say no he's a dog... I also say no he is a normal standard size Yorkie and tell them "teacup" means an unhealthy dog and a bad breeder. |
what was considered a "mutt" is now considered a "designer breed" So if someone decided to take a Prada bag and combine it with a Louis V and call it a Prouis, would that still be a designer bag Marketing, it's all about marketing and unfortunately there is a market of twits out there who are all about bag dogs. My friend's daughter is upset because when she bought her Yorkie (and spent a small fortune doing so) she was told he's gonna be 4 pounds. Well he's 9 pounds. She said she'd rather have one the size of Teegy. What a fecking twit. Sorry I vented |

A friend of mine is a breeder but not of Yorkies. She had a prospective owner come to meet her and see the puppies she had available. The lady never met the puppies. She met my friend and as they were talking she was asking about how big the puppies would probably get. My friend told her that she could not give any guarentees but that they would be between 5 and 8 pounds full grown based on the parents and their size so far. (The puppies were 8 weeks at the time). The lady told her that they were going to be way to big. She was looking for something for her and her daughter for around 3lbs max full grown. My friend tried really hard to discourage her but the lady left determined that she would find and buy a puppy that size. To me that is very frustrating because my friend was trying to tell her the information and warnings that she needed to hear and she was just refusing to listen. |
