My little Jilly was a runt of her litter and lived to 12 1/2. She topped out at an oz over 3 lbs. and was so fragile. Still, she was all terrier at heart. She was such a sweetie! I miss her so much still.

I dont believe all tinies have health problems. I do think they are more susceptible to injuries though and that makes them unsuitable for some households

Yes definitely more susceptible to injuries! My Baby Chan is 8 months old now and only weighs 3 lbs. I didn't go looking for a tiny yorkie and I did my best to find a good breeder. I searched for months and left many places without a pup. When I saw my girl I fell in love! Love at first sight! And the breeder was great with me and has kept in touch. She still has my girls brother who is 4.75 lbs! I do wish my baby would get to that weight. But love her no matter what and want the best for her. I feel very nervous though letting her play outside or anywhere in public because of her size. So that stinks! Because she's the friendliest girl and doesn't think she is small at all! She thinks she's 10 lbs! Haha!

Awww...Jilly sounds so sweet. I like hearing that the little ones can live to a ripe old age. We got Roxi in January and all I have done is worry about all the problems she supposedly is going to have. I freak out everytime she sneezes!! And yes, she is very fragile, but she doesn't know it. ;)

Ah, she was sweet and very active all her little life - such a little bitty love. Jilly was my girl! She's been gone 7 years and boy, I still love her fiercely. She had a ready tendency to GI problems all of her life and asymptomatic LP but as long as care was taken and treatment rendered timely, she did very well.

She was an excellent watch dog, loved to play tugowar and mostly disliked other dogs, even rushed a Dalmation to "protect" me, resulting in an attack, bites, had surgery, remained absolutely fearless. She almost choked to death on a chewie once. She loved music! Despite all the problems she had due to her tiny size, she had big presence, ran my life and lived large. I think she really thought she was a human!

Lol! I hear ya! I'm horrible with direction :rolleyes: I didn't know Birch Run was dog friendly either. I haven't been there in ages though since it's about an hr plus some from me. My daughter went there a few months back and she didn't remember seeing a dog bakery there either. That's good to know as well! Might check it out when I can! :)

Same with Louie. One time he tried the samples they had and it didn't agree with him. The only one I found that works with him is the peanut brittle. You might wanna try it! :)

We actually picked Roxi over her sister (who was a little bigger) because Roxi had more energy and personality. And I am definitely looking into pet insurance for her. We have only had her about 3 months and everyone is sooo in love with her (except my 2 cats). I hope she turns out as special as your Jilly. I find myself worrying more about Roxi than I did when my daughter was a baby!! We have also had 2 choking scares from Roxi in the last 4 days. I have special little bones I bought for her to use in training which worked great while she was really tiny, but now she is almost swallowing them whole and choking. I'm definitely going back to the cheerios for training and those dog bones gone.

I say if you want a pet that small, go get a guinea pig. :mad::thumbdown

Not Afraid to Admit -- I Love the Little Ones!
 

I know it is somehow looked on as a sin by some, but I am not afraid to admit, I LOVE little yorkies! One of the reasons I wanted yorkies is BECAUSE they are small. There is nothing wrong with prefering the tinies. No one trash talks a person who has one over the standard weight that says, I ♥ teapots! So, I ask for equal treatment! :) Why not be proud to love our tinies? I am!

I don't mind if someone asks if my Annie (just hit 3 pounds!) is a teacup either. I just say (WITH A SMILE), "the Yorkshire Terrier doesn't have a teacup size designation, but she is just a little smaller than average. " Simple as that. I figure as long as the person is meaning no harm, why should I take offense? There is no reason to jump down people's throats or get all superior (not saying anyone here has done that -- thinking of a past experience) just because they use the word "teacup." Only irresponsible breeders have given that term a bad meaning. Some breeds do have a teacup designation. It is nothing sinister in itself.

What does make my blood boil, is irresponsible breeding! So the lady handing a card advertising breeding teacup yorkies would NOT have gotten that same smile. Breeding yorkie girls less than 5 pounds is nothing more than greed! So many things can go wrong with a good sized girl during pregnancy, delivery, and post-whelp. Why anyone would want to take the increased chances with a tiny one, is beyond me. It says they just don't care -- or at least they care more about making money than keeping their girl safe.

When I get another yorkie, I will try to make sure I get a smaller one again. I will NOT use a breeder that is purposely breeding too small of yorkies to get those tiny babies though. I want normal sized parents & grandparents. I want a responsible breeder. I just prefer the small babies. I don't parade mine around, rarely take them away from home, so I am not trying to show off tiny ones. I just like the way you can have 3 little ones sleeping all over you in a chair, have a little one asleep on your neck, easily carry one or more (even with one bum arm), and they look so cute & petite.

I love all dogs -- any size, shape or color! But when picking one for myself, there are a few things I prefer, and small size is one of them. I am not ashamed of it, no reason to be! Some prefer a larger, more substantial body -- that is their preference too. I sure would not want to get rid of one that happened to grow big either! Ben is average sized, not a tiny by any means. I love him to pieces and always will! So, the size thing is not that big a deal -- just like many of my other preferences -- like a rich steely blue coat not the silver I see so often. Doesn't mean I won't love a silver-coated baby but if I could have my druthers, I would want my baby to have the richer coat like Ben's. Personality is still number one for me -- I lovingly remember my first yorkie, Maggie. She was not any of my "preferences" in appearance but she had the BEST personality! She lived to love! Easy to forget what those other preferences might be when you are so wrapped around their little paw! :D
