Generalizations - Male vs Female Since I have been thinking about a new pup, I was wondering on what you guys have found out by experience? I have read that females seem less attached (are more independent) and usually are closer to male humans. I have found my Layla to definitely be much more attached to my boyfriend than myself. Alas, I wanted another female because she and Layla could interchange clothes, etc., but I would hate to end up getting my boyfriend another dog! lol. In essense, is it possible for me to find a female that will be affectionate and attached to me, despite me being a female? I am really crossing my fingers! What do you guys think? Share your experiences, please! :) |
My male is very attached to me and my female enjoys us both. If I were to get another, I would get another male because of how cuddly and lovey Couver is with me. Good luck in your decision!! |
I've read that females are more independent and males more cuddly, but that has never been my personal experience. My current & previous yorkie were both female & both were/are cuddly, love to snuggle on my lap, follow me everywhere in the house, pups. I've been thinking of getting another yorkie recently too! If I do, I'll definately get another female, that can share all the clothes & bows :) |
My boys are definitely the lovers. Daisy likes us, but she likes her space. I will often find my boys lying together and she will be in her house seeking refuge from them. She just would rather be in her house with her ball than with her humans or her fur-siblings. |

My female is very affectionate to both me and my husband. I think you should pick a pup on its personality rather than its sex because I dont believe all females are more attached to a male owner. It didnt work out that way for us. Also I have cats and with cats there is a common belief that the males are affectionate and the females are more independent but I have affectionate very dependent females so I dont go by common beliefs when picking out a pet |
2 Attachment(s) Well I have the best of both worlds. One I can dress in pink and one in blue and I love it. They both love cuddles and they have their special sitting place, Tia in the crook of my arm and Olly takes the lap. Heres a pic. Attachment 341327 Attachment 341328 |

I have a little girl and she is very attached to me. Loves to sleep beside me and cuddle in my lap ! |
I believe your generalization is entirely true, it has been in my experience, but my son's dog is a male and they are 'partners in crime' :D The boys here love me, and my daughter; our female prefers men, but it's a generalization, our female is definitely Dad's dog, but loves me and there are tons on women on here with females who love them over men. I will throw my two cents in male/female get them altered two females will buck for which is 'top bitch' at some point...so having even two altered females in important...an unaltered female will drive even an altered male into girl crazy behavior. Both males & females "mark" I say find the right breeder buy them, then do a meet and greet with your female and find the right addition for all of you male or female. |
My boy, Buzz, is, definitely, more of a snuggle bug, than my girl, Apple...Apple likes to be loved on, when she first wakes up, and right before she goes to sleep...Buzz will stop whatever he's doing for a pet or a snuggle... |
It's definitely too much of a generalization. I had met three Yorkies before getting Ellie and chose a girl from my experience with the others. I've heard the boys can be really snuggly, but my girl is the snuggliest dog I've ever met. She can be independent and loves to play, but she could spend hours in the crook of an arm. And she doesn't like many males - at all - in fact, she hates them... |
My little girl isn't very snuggly. She LOVES attention, but won't sit still very long curled up on your lap or next to you. However, I have a male Lhasa/Pom mix who is very content to just last next to you. They are complete opposites ;) |

I have a girl, Callie and she is extremely attached to me. Callie also is not extremely independent except in her own yard and house. If we go to the dog park she will play but continuously turn around and check on me or come over and hit me with her nose and runs away to play again. I have heard of females being more stubborn and I agree with that because Callie can be VERY stubborn sometimes. My mom rescued a male yorkie and he is pretty chill but not much of a cuddler at least not yet. We have a terrible time finding clothes for him though unless custom made they have to be cut and stitched or he will pee on it. |
I like male dogs better in my experience in the past few years as a dogsitter. The few females I've watched were, well, bitches, lol. I guess they have their name for a reason. My dads dog, Lily, for example loves to cuddle, give kisses and be loved on. But if you go in to pet her when she doesn't want you to, she will growl, walk away or give attitude. She is also is the most stubborn and doesn't wanna listen to a word you say. I grew up with female dogs and we always loved them to death of course but they were definitely very independent. They liked to be with us on their own terms. Jackson is obviously a boy and while I wouldn't say he's cuddly (he'd prefer not to be held for long periods of time) but he's super attached to me. He follows me from room to room, at night he does snuggle in close with me, and in the morning he loves his attention when we first wake up. He's super willing to please me. I don't really know how to explain it, but I connect better with boy dogs. I don't think I'll ever own a girl again. It's not that I don't like girl dogs... and there's always an exception to every "rule" obviously. If the right dog came up and it was a girl, I wouldn't turn her down of course. Boys have just become my preference. |
In my experience with both cats and dogs, little girls love you, but the little boys are in love with you. |
All of my little ones have been females. My little girls are extremely attached to me and very sweet. Both of them are lap furbies. They are on my lap right now. They love their Daddy, but they prefer being with me. |
I have heard this very debate over every species of animal and I do for the most part believe there is a lot to it generally speaking. Since I have not heard personality mentioned I think some people just click better with one sex or the other based on overall personality. I prefer females though but I don't really know if there is a specific reason. I think my girls are loyal and cuddle with me as much as I would ever want them to. As far as them "choosing" who they prefer in my house, well, I've never had that issue. Every one in my house thinks our dogs belong to them..........unless I'm around :D:D :p |
I have both but...I prefer females...My girls are always very snuggly, loving and attached to me. They love DH too...but they are Momma's girls. Harley is all of the above and more but as soon as DH walks in the door, us girls are kicked to the curve and he is all about Daddy :D |
I think it depends on the personality. Taycie does like to have her own space but it is still usually on my bed a few feet away:) Then in about an hour she ends up on my lap. Other then that she is super snuggly and follows me everywhere. This was not always the case as a puppy.. When she about 7 months old she started to mature I guess? She always followed me and she has always liked to carried but that is when I noticed she actually wanted me to cuddle her! I am a stomach sleeper and I always wake up to her sprawled out on my back.. if I roll over she is on my stomach.. then some nights she curls up in a little ball right next to my head. Where ever I go she follows sits or sleep and she loves to perch herself on my shoulder. If I am on the couch she rests on my shoulder like a little bird. Its really cute:) Again, I think it depends on the dog, every pup is different:) |
I don't have experience with females but my boy Oliver is soooo attached to my boyfriend! He makes fun of me sometimes because I'll want to cuddle and Oliver will have nothing to do with me! But yes he is very cuddly in general, but not sure if he is more so than a female would be :) |
I have had two male Yorkies - my first long ago and my Tibbe now, with Jilly, a female, in the middle. I cannot tell you in good conscience that one was any cuddlier or more bonded with me than the other. Each relationship has been distinct and quite different but each of them so loving in their own way. Scotty, my first was super loving and so cute. My Jilly might have been the sweetest dog in the world. I guess my current dog, Tibbe, a male, is my smartest, cuddliest Yorkie and requires a lot more lap time than the other two, but as he was essentially a rescue, that may be part of it. I think he just needs more reassurance due to his former crate life. And being a neutered male, he has never marked in the house and is completely house trained. I don't see how you can go wrong whichever sex you chose. |

I love my girls dearly.....but, oh my boys.....they are definately mine....the girls are daddys' My boys are more willing to please me, will do anything I ask....my girls well, on their time, if they want. |
I do find boys are much much more affectionate and cuddly- girls can be lovers too, but until you actually HAVE a boy, you can't understand- it is a totally different kind of devotion. |
im talking one side since my 3 last yorkies were boys (getting my first female tomorrow, yayayayay!) my boys are very affectionate and definitely are momma's boys...they love to cuddle. my latest riley is a kissie monster! johnny was very independent tho...wanted to be next to me, but not on me. training wise, 2 out 3 boys were so easy to potty train with treat encouragement, mickey never ever grasped it..it was a constant fight. riley is the totally package, loving, affectionate and trained very easy! so it seems to every rule there is exceptions...think it depends on the dogs personality much more than the sex..but once again...ive never owned a girl! |
You know what I've noticed? Most dog movies star male dogs.... just a few that come to mind: K-9, Air Bud, Homeward Bound (both male dogs, plus female cat), Far From Home, Hachi: A Dog's Tale, Marley & Me, Underdog, Beethoven, Benji, Bingo, The Shaggy Dog, Shiloh, Milo & Otis, Firehouse Dog, Old Yeller, My Dog Skip... just to name a few, LOL. I think in the training world, males are known to be easier to train? |
