Wouldn't it be great to have GIANT Yorkies?! Yes! Some of us posses yorkies bigger than standard. I have two of them and am proud! Bambi is a 12 pounds yorkie and Mia is 9 pounds but she is 6 months old so I think she will be around 10-11 lbs. :yorkiej: I know all about the AKC standard but I still believe it is great to have these awesome sturdy yorkshire terriers which not only have the temperament of one but also the muscle. :p The thing is I would find it great if Yorkies had like Schnauzers the different size versions. I would absolutely :love: to own a 50lbs Yorkshire Terrier!!! Just imagine a giant :yorkieg: in the patio running with his lovely hair flowing majestically with the wind like the afghan hounds do. :eek: Call me weird, but I love yorkies in all their shades and shapes! ;) |
LOL - that does sound like fun - but I have to tell you I did own an Afghan Hound, and keeping all that hair from getting tangled was a full time job - I eventually kept her in a "puppy" cut - would definately need to be housebroke - can you imagine the size of the "Pee Pads":eek:...LOL! Not to mention how much it would cost us to dress a 50 lb yorkie...lol:D!!! I think I'll just stick with my 9 pounder! But I know what you're saying - just can't get enough of them!! |
My first impulse is to say YES! A huge yorkie to cuddle with. That would be AWESOME!!!!! But, let's be realistic ladies. I think we can barely handle one smart, cunning, mischievous yorkie in a small package. (I'm including any yorkie under 20 lbs too) Imagine if they were the size of a German Shephard. We would be done for! They would definitely be able to take over the world. (you know that's what they're planning, right?) ;) |
A lot of the appeal of yorkies to me is there size. There are tons of active, energetic, terriers to choose from if you want a large dog. I chose yorkies because I wanted a fun, spunky dog who was still easy enough to throw in a bag and take on a plane or in the car when I travel. A dog over 10 pounds likely wouldn't fit well with my lifestyle- so for now I stick with my tiny terrors- OOPS! terriers. |

I wish they would up the standard a little bit... because I prefer 10-20lb Yorkies for sure. It's nice to still have that Yorkie personality in a bit larger package. But I think there's a lot of great 50+ plus terriers that could suit someone who wants a big dog. An Airedale comes to mind.... but it is a funny thought!!!! |

Shhhhhhh! Don't tell Tallulah. She thinks she is just as big as the mastiff she met at school a few weeks ago. I love being able to carry her around because she weighs just a little over 5 lb. But if increasing the size called for by the standard would reduce some of the health issues these little guys can have, I would be all for it. |

Well, I'd definitely need a much bigger bed for my 4 if they were giants:D Maybe 2 king size beds instead of 1. |
Terrifies me..if a 5lb Yorkie acts like 50 pound dog...what would a 50 pound Yorkie act like...? Eeeeeek! |

Shhhh... No one has told Rhett that he doesn't weigh 50 pounds. Even the lab across the street is afraid to tell him :) And I would really hate to wrestle a 50 pound dog for my pillow, I hardly ever win as it is. I agree with Brit, though. I'd like to see the standard increased a bit to try and discourage the purposeful breeding of the really tiny ones. 7 pounds is small, but so is a 10 pounder. The difference in the muscle mass though seems like night and day. |

I'm thinking none of the original breeds used to create the Yorkie were over 25lbs so...not sure the standard should be changed (or even want to go there as many may take offense) but agree further downsizing should be discouraged (not to for any reason other than the health issues that are more prevalent). Interesting food for thought though.:thumbup: In the same breath Great Danes were bred to be so oversized they have shorter life spans and health issues... |

Mr. and Mrs. M.A. Foster of Bradford, in West Yorkshire England, owned Huddersfield Ben...yes that's what I was referring to but I'm not sure what it means in it saying he was the linebred (?) and the founding father of the breed (foundation sire of the breed) I understand he was a not Yorkie as we know them now is but the whole founding father thing confuses me personally...I see was best in show, second places etc... |

I don't think we could handle a 50 lb yorkie if it was anything like Zach. We have 2 Basset Hounds that weigh 55 and 57 lbs and we can just about handle them. Mind you they are very laid back and they think they're lap dogs. |
LOL you are all right! They would be too much to handle! Haha, but I just think how cool it would have been to have the different size options. :D Yes, can't have enough of them! So cute and crazy lol but now that I give it a second thought I am always thanking God for making Nina 5lbs. since she thinks of herself as a rottweiler and OMG she is hard to handle when she wants to eat my neighbor's german shepherd! Oh well! I will keep on dreaming! :aimeeyork |
