Two yorkies better than one? I have Gizmo who is 9 months old and although i know hes happy,I have been thinking about getting him a playmate. I found a female yorkie at a nearby shelter and shes as tiny as my little guy a whopping 3.5 pounds!!! I will be starting up school again in the next 6 months so i dont want my little guy to be lonely. Although my mother in law (who has 2 dogs a yorkie and a shih tsu) said that she could watch Gizmo when im in school i feel like this is the time when and IF we are going to get another puppy. I want him to grow up with another dog and he always loves his play dates with friends and families dogs. I rather not wait till hes too old to get another one. Anyone else have 2 yorkies and love it? Any downsides to having another yorkie besides the added expenses? Christina & Gizmo |
Well I have 2 yorkies now and I love it! I just got the female one last month. She (Jada) is almost 4 months and my male Kobe (my first one) is now almost 8 months! Kobe is not lonely anymore. He and Jada are always playing with each other and sleep together! Back then when I had to go work, Kobe had to stay home and all he did was lie down at the corner wall waiting for me to come home. But now he has Jada and they're always playing with each other! The bad part is, Jada isn't that close with me. She has Kobe, so she's always wanting to be with him. She does come to me when I call her. She listens to me, but I just feel like she doesn't have that connection with me. I still love her though!!! I play with her too, but then Kobe butts in and then off they go running to play with each other! So if you want to do it, then do it!!! I did, and I don't regret it no matter what others say to me! I'm glad I did it while Kobe is still a pup too, so they can both grow up together! They're only 4 months apart. Kobe is nuetered already and Jada will be spayed pretty soon too. They're the best!!!!!!!!!! Hope that helped a little bit! Good luck on your decision! |
I think it would be great for them to be so close in age like your puppies. I have to convince my hubby... ugh hes giving me a hard time! |
I LOVE having 4 furgirls! I really do like the idea of having more than one to keep each other company when you are not there. However, make sure you are up to the additional expenses of another, especially vet costs. |
ZoE is a puppy and I'm already thinking about getting another for company too! My concern is potty training with pee pads. Will two pups use the same pads or will they not go where each other goes? |

I had to convince my husband too! In the end, he got her for me for vday. |
thats true.... i would assume they could use the same and i would think that if one does it the other would follow? Thats what ive heard at least. |

In my house all 4 dogs will go on the same pad; they keep me changing often:) |
I tried to get another Yorkie when my second Yorkie, Jilly was 6 years old. Jilly weighed only 3 lbs. grown, having been the runt of her litter with some severe G-I problems that nearly killed her when I first got her. I got a little female Yorkie as I had always wanted two Yorkies but it ruined Jilly's life - as she had been an only dog for so long, I guess. Jilly took to the back of the den couch and basically stayed there for 3 months. I went through every suggestion known to man to try to get her to accomodate to Teddy, the new girl, but she would not. All the research I had done about introducing a new pet, all the dog people I spoke to about the situation afterward, the vet visits, you name it, none of it worked with Jilly. She began to chew on her ankles obsessively and stopped eating, lost weight, had tummy troubles, would not even cuddle normally with me after a while of Teddy living here. Long, very painful story short(I loved Teddy so, so much by that time), after 90 days and fearing my Jilly might pine and starve herself to death, or worse, continue to live a miserable life, I had to rehome Teddy. Teddy was an only dog in her new home and, it turned out, excelled in obedience and agility, in spite of the fact that her new mommie kept her in full show coat. She grew up into a lovely, athletic dog. Jilly, once Teddy was carried out the front door by her new mommie and daddy and I was sitting on the living room floor sobbing in misery, instantly returned to her old self, resumed her old life, stopped chewing her ankles and starving herself and thrived once again. No one could ever figure out why she just could not accept Teddy but then she had never liked to be around any other dogs. I knew that but I thought that if I brought one to live with us and be her sister, she would eventually accept her and begin to love her - but 90 days later, she still hadn't, she was nervous, remote, very thin and had balding spots on her ankles, returning G-I episodes and I was scared she was going to lose her health. After Teddy went to her new home, I would look at Jilly and ask, "Where is Teddy?" and she would not even bother to look around or run and sniff or react at all - she would just stare straight at me as if she had wiped the very memory of Teddy completely out of her mind. Jilly lived another 6 1/2 years, the queen of her world and I never again tried another dog in our house as long as she lived. I was just happy to have my Jilly healthy and happy again. My current Yorkie, Tibbe, LOVES all dogs and I think he would thrive with another family member or two!!! He just lights up when he has dog visitors here and whines and mopes when they leave. He will stand at the front door after they are gone and bark and whine after them and give me daggers looks because I "let" them leave!!! Tibbe is not small or frail like Jilly was so I do not know if that is why he loves other dogs and Jilly did not. From everything I understand, Jilly's attitude about other dogs was not common in Yorkies. So, if your dog is like Tibbe, I'll bet he would LOVE a brother or sister. I hope you can get one as I think two Yorkies would be lots of fun and good company for each other. |
Two are definitely better than one |
1 Attachment(s) I have had two yorkies comig up for a year now and they are 8 mths apart and very similiar in weight too. It certainly cured the lonliness for my little girl , they totally adore each other. I'm still as close to my little girl even though Olly has come along. The only difference for me has been its a little more worrying on walks when I need to pick two dogs up instead of one when the big bad doggies charge towards us lol other than that its brilliant!Attachment 340994 |
Carmel and Emma are 3 months apart (when I got them). They are a little less than 2 months apart in age. They are GREAT together! They play with one another. However, potty training was HARD! If you're starting school, I'd say just bring Gizmo to your mom's. It takes at least 6 months to potty train and you really need to put in a lot of work. They don't automatically follow one another. Depending on the sex you get, they may mark and stuff. I have one boy and one girl, both spayed and neutered. HAHA right now, Emma is trying to hump Carmel  |
How old is the girl? Can they meet a couple times first to ensure they are a match? I say two are better, not at the same time as in don't get two pups, have one trained and add another for a buddy and ease of training... |
2 are better than one! you have received wise advise of training one before the other though. training the 2nd one will be so easy because your 1st one will teach the other the ropes. i adopted a 5 month old puppy last october after losing my little nika last august. my 10 year old yorkie zowi was so depressed without another yorkie around even though i have 2 other dogs. zowi loves all dogs but was so bonded with her only daughter nika. turns out, it was a great decision to add another yorkie. pixie, the new puppy now 10 months old and zowi are completely inseperable now. zowi cleans her face every day and mothers pixie. it is the cutest thing in the world! pixie does everything that zowi does, including potties where she potties. it was a great decision for us that has made my zowi baby and us so happy again. nika will always be missed by us and there will always be a void in our hearts from losing her. her spirit and love are felt so strongly all around us. we tell pixie about her all the time. seeing zowi and pixie snuggle up and cuddle sleeping together melts my heart! |
I am so happy I got another yorkie. Levi loves to play with Lily. I would definitely vote to add another! |
