There are so many crazy people in the world now I don't even take my dogs to Petsmart anymore, afraid someone would steal one out of the cart and run. I never leave them in the car either. You were lucky he was probably wanting to take the dog as a gift to GF who doesn't exist or sale him. |

10-20 years ago I always took my little Ginger with me everywhere. I never even gave a thought of leaving her in the car when I went into the grocery store or someplace like that for a few minutes. Now after hearing stories of theft of small dogs, I am afraid to even leave them in the car for a minute! When we travel and stop for gas, one of us is in the car. If we make a quick stop for fast food, we park facing the building and sit right where we can see them in the car. Isn't is sad that society has become like this? Who would have thought that people could think of taking a dog from their family. I remember a post a while back about a home service call worker making the home owner feel uncomfortable, asking personal questions about her yorkie. I think if I have a service call now, I will make sure that my dogs will be in a closed off room, and my DH will either be with me. I don't think I even feel comfortable anymore being alone with a service man coming in. Granted, not that he would 'want' me, but might hurt me getting to my yorkies, or our valuables. You just don't know anymore. Maybe I am just getting old and 'funny'! ;) |
I totally understand why you got the creepy vibes from that guy! How weird! With all the stories that we read about missing and stolen yorkies, you can't help but be paranoid. We have done everything we can to possibly avoid anything like this from happening to our babies. DH and I built a 6' privacy fence in the backyard so people cannot see what type of dogs we have and we put in a security system with motion sensors, glass breaks and door chimes so if anyone ever broke into our house they would not make it far. We also installed a security camera to catch anyone who tries to enter our property. We may be paranoid, but I know my babies are safe from theft. You cannot be too safe when it comes to our babies... Everything else is replaceable, but not my babies. |
I just think its careful to keep everything in perspective and try not to be too paranoid that it effects your dogs quality of life. Dogs love to get out, see new things, smell new things, interact with different people, etc. I am very cautious about my dogs, I never leave them alone in the car, they aren't left outside unattended, I try to keep them in a separate room when random service workers come into my home. However, I still take them to stores with me, take them to the park/ dog park, let them run errands with me, take them for walks around the block. The world can be a scary place but we still have to go out and live in it and so do our dogs. |

I agree, they are dogs and need to be treated as such to be happy healthy pets. I still don't like ever leaving mine in the car-so I plan when and where we do outings if they go with me, so they can go in places with me (stinking Target won't let dogs in anymore and the mall it's touch and go these days). We had such a big media ordeal over a car being stolen from all places the court house's parking lot and the officer had his Yorkie mix in it... Poor Princess Monster gets car sick so we don't take her out like that unless it's absolutely needed, Scoobers stays home to guard her LOL, Elvis is epileptic so I either leave him in his own area or take him with when I can and I double check, lock, and turn off everything but the TV before leaving home...but once the fire department let Scoobers out when my uncle was visiting our house, so all you can do is be responsible, aware, cautious, and hope for the best.
