| How can I get Hudson to poop outside? Hi everyone, So i've had Hudson (9 mos) for about a week now and he's doing great with peeing outside. I've been crate training him and although he had a few accidents indoors I think he's been doing a pretty fantastic job given his new surroundings. I think the "accidents" are just him "marking" though not because he can't hold his bladder. He has not been neutered yet. I take him out first thing in the morning, about 4 times during the day and then once more before bedtime. Unfortunately getting him to poop outside has been more difficult. My breeder said that they normally poop about 30 minutes after they've eaten so I should try and watch for this. He's pooped 3 times since I've gotten him. The 1st time was in my living room. I actually saw him scamper around and I knew he had to go so I took him outside for 15 minutes but he didn't go and then as soon as I brought him back in he went! The 2nd time was at the dog park and the 3rd time was this morning. He pooped in his crate sometime during the night and I was sad b/c poor thing was sleeping right next to it till i came down in the morning and let him out. Does anyone have tips for training your yorkie to poop outdoors? Thanks guys! |

| Has Hudson really only pooped 3 times in one week? He should be eliminating at least once a day. When I wanted to teach my pad-trained pup that it was okay to poop outside, I took him walking. Exercise often moves things along. I believe it is more effective than standing around in the yard when training. When Max finally pooped on our walk, I praised him profusely. I threw a party in the street, "Woohoo, good boy!!" with a pat on the back. After he saw how excited I was, he wanted to do it every day.

| Thanks Maximo for the insight. I've had Hudson for a total of 5 days now. I got him on Tuesday night so I agree that it's unusual he's only pooped 3 times. Thank you for reassuring me that he SHOULD be pooping 1/day though. I asked my vet about it and she said it's likely because he's in new surroundings and may be because he's not eating regularly just yet. I'll take your advice re: the exercise and see what happens. I'm hoping this is just because he's getting used to the schedule that I am putting him on. I'll keep you updated!! |

| Now I understand, and yes, I agree he is probably just going through an adjustment period. Three times in 5 days is not alarming. Keep us updated on poopy training.

| I love the name Hudson!! If Hudson poops in the house, take the poop in a paper towel and put it (the towel and the poop) in the area where you want him to go. If he goes to it and poops nearby, make a big deal of it - What a good boy - you did poopy , etc. Good Luck!!!! |

| Hmmm I wouldn't wait 30 minutes for him to poop after eating. Once Giz is done, he's hooked up and taken out. Also, if he goes outside and doesn't poop when he's suppose to, I would bring him back inside, keep him on the leash, don't give him any access to play, chew on the bone, etc., wait 5 min and then take him back out. What it is reinforcing is that outside time is potty time. Only had to do that twice with Gizmo and now he's a pooping machine. Good luck! Gizmo's Mommy |

| Thanks for all the tips guys! Taryn, so does Giz really go right after eating?! If so, that's great. Wow, I hope I can get Hudson to that level. Was he always like that? Hmm, I'm curious to know now if most yorkies poop right after eating too... |

| After he gets acclimated to his new surroundings....you should be able to figure out his poo schedule... My girls go as soon as they get up...and right after dinner....so that makes it easy for me to know when they need to go.. Also if you take him out and he doesn't go...you need to put him in a crate or xpen......with a potty pad in it.... then as soon as you take him out of the pen...go directly outside again....until you get him to go...I never let my little ones have free run of the house until they had gone potty... Granted he's 9 months old...did he come p'trained at all? Or are you having to teach him all the basics of going outside? Are you using potty pads? If you have one in his crate or xpen...you should also have one near the front door...and always use the same door to take him out...my girls learned pretty early...which door to go to when they had to go potty. Good luck!

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. But yes, after he eats he goes right out and poops. But like I said, I made sure if he didn't that we would come in, he's stay on the leash, didn't play, and I'd wait about 10 min. and take him out again. He got the hang of it really quick.

| when you get up in the morning take him outside, don't bring him in until he goes. Do this consistently each time he has to go and then he'll just start asking to go out |

| Hi all! Just wanted to update you on Hudson's progress. Since my last post about this, Hudson has been pooping outdoors!! Two days ago he pooped twice, each time during his walks outside. And yesterday he also pooped outside during an evening walk. I'm still getting a hang of his poop "schedule" and contrary to what others have been saying, Hudson still doesn't poop immediately after eating. I tried taking him out right after, bringing him back in and then back out again if he didn't poop and still nothing. However, i'm not giving up!! I'm just glad he's learning to poop outside and hopefully i'll have him on a more solid routine soon! |

Yes, yes I agree ! This is what I did with mine when I was paper training them. If they poo in the house I took it to the papers a left it there for them to smell and as a sign that "Yep that were you need to do the business.." Until he gets use to going out side to potty leave the poo on the ground as long as you can. They know their own scent and will look for it when searching for just the right spot, which sometimes can take forever.
