Puppy Proofing my Balcony. I moved a few months ago and now have a really nice size balcony- now that the weather is finally getting nice, I would love to sit out there with the dogs sometimes but not have to tie them up. The balcony is on the second floor and the bars are way too far apart- the dogs would be through them in a second and Armani's ears may be huge but not big enough to fly I'm sure. Anyone have any ideas how to secure the balcony so its safe? A neighbor has put up chicken wire on theirs but it looks pretty bad- if all else fails I will do the same- obviously safety comes first, but if it is possible not the compromise style I would prefer that! It has to be a temporary solution since I don't own the place- and the bars are not wood, so nailing anything is out. Thanks for any advice :) |
i live on the 3rd floor and had the same issue. i got some really thin board and had it cut in half lengthwise so it's about 12-15" high i think, i nailed mine in since it is wood out there and that makes me feel secure letting princess out there. but since you can't nail i wonder if you could cut some lattice the same way and kind of tie it to the posts? i would worry about chicken wire, it just seems like they could get caught up in it or something. but of course the lattice wont work if they're climbers either. good luck. :) |
What about plexiglass? You could drill holes and use zip ties to attach to the railing. It would be invisible too. They sell it at Home Depot or you could go to a glass store and they will cut it to the proper size. There is a home down the street from us that has a deck they did this to and it looks great. If I didn't know it was there you couldn't even tell. |

I even know the owners of a glass store :) Now I just have to convince my dad to come over and drill me some holes- I failed "shop" and am not allowed near tools of any kind :p |

If you do use chicken wire don't buy the super thin really bendable stuff buy the small sturdy squares one (quarter inch sided squares-very cheap by the bundle)...and you can use a spray paint (for metal) to paint it a color that matches your decor on the balcony...it's all in how you finish it. |

I will make sure to post photos of the pups enjoying their new space! |
This is a very informative Thread ! I think it would be a good candidate, to be moved to the "Animal Protection and Welfare" Forum, since many other safety related issues are discussed there. |

4 Attachment(s) Here is an inexpensive but sturdy and dressy looking way to dog proof a balcony. We had wrought iron railing put on our balcony and of course we were then faced with them being too far apart for our little girls, so we went to ACE hardware and got two things. This very tough netting and ties. (This netting also comes in a light cream color). We will put it up when the rains have quit here in CA. |
When my daughter was little we lived in a 4th floor condo temporarily, We wove fiberglas window screening in and out of the rails. It was easy to put up, easy to remove. We saved it and 20 years later we used the old screening to weave thru the picket fence on the side yard so Ziva couldn't escape.(I like the plexiglas idea better but $$ and permanence might make a difference...) |
When I met Nikki's former owner, she had a second floor balcony and was afraid to let Nikki out on it. I bought an ex pen and lined the balcony with it. It worked great for them. |

I'm always talking about this: We have a couple decks and the upper one that leads out of the kitchen is 12x12, we put in a doggie door that goes straight into a "doggie outhouse" (lined with potty pads (opens on top for cleaning) - also the top has a cut out with plexiglass for light...the "outhouse" has another door that leads to the deck (with a little screen door we can open or shut - depending on whether we want them to have access to the deck) We enclosed the entire deck slats with chicken wire so they couldn't fall through. We also made sure to run the chicken wire under the deck so they couldn't slip under the slat rail. Thus the wire (stapled tightly on the outside of the slats) is about three feet high and they absolutely love running in and out, allows them fresh air and a sense of a little more freedom...we only give them access to the deck when we're home -due to (as I've said before) my paranoia someone might steal them. |
