Sluggish and not wanting to eat 4 days after spay... My yorkie girl Sassy is 2 years old and was spayed on Friday. Her incision looks wonderful but all she is doing is laying around, refusing to eat. She is peeing and drinking, she has pooped a little bit too. I am just concerned. Is this normal behavior? She was in heat when they spayed her. Could hormonal changes be making her feel bad? She has a recheck with out vet on Friday. I am just a worried mom :( |
Is she running a fever? I wouldn't consider what you described as normal behavior...usually 4 days later they are pretty much their "old selves". I'd take her in to be checked before Friday if I were you. |

They can experience an extended false pregnancy when spayed during a heat. This may or may not be the cause of her symptoms. Best to have her checked by your vet asap. |

Lucy is my first female dog. Both my males bounced back rather quickly from being neutered; but she took quite a lot longer to bounce back from her spay. She was pretty quiet for 4-5 days. She ate and drank and all - but not much playing or running around. If you are concerned, then I would call the vet and see if they want to see her sooner than Friday. |
I was able to get Sassy to eat dinner tonight by hand feeding it to her. I was reading that the side effects of her pain medication include loss of appetite. :( Poor girl...if she doesnt improve I will call the vet tomorrow. |
Yorkie not feeling well 4 days after Spay I had Jazmine spayed at 6 months - she weighed around 3.75 pounds at that time and she did not bounce back after her spay as most dogs do especially large dogs - they seem to bounce back faster. I too was really worried about her I took 3 days off of work to stay home and keep her company - it took most of a week for her to get back to her old self. I think they are much like people - some of us seem to recover more quickly than others - she is my first little yorkie so I am very very attentive to her - as long as there is no sign of infection ( fever or redness around the incision) and her kidneys and bowls working which you say they are I wouldn't worry too much- I know it's hard not to :) I called my vet 2 times the week after and he assured me that as long as there was no fever - throwing up and she was taking water she would heal in at her own pace and she did. I would take her temp and if she has a fever take her to the vet Lexi was spade the other day and she is three and a half. Every thing looked well but she was not herself day four. She was shaking not eating well. Turns out she caught a virus Two shots later and sent home with some meds and she is back to her wonderful crazy self. |

I took her temperature and it was 100.5 :) Her incision is not red or swollen..looks good. She actually ate treats tonight and dinner. I am thinking these actions are due to her pain medication, which was finished today. |

Good luck with the appt but if you will giving pain meds that could result in the sluggish behavior. We really didnt give the pain meds as she just slept the first day and by day 3, she was back to normal. |
