THE BEST ARTICLE on MILLS & Transport of Dogs I received a really nice pm today about my signature from someone asking about Puppy Mills......To that person - I hope my answer helped you understand the importance of helping shut them down. IF ANYONE is ever sadly mistaken and thinks buying in a PET STORE IS OK ....READ THIS !! IT's one of the best articles I've ever read. You will be SICK hearing how these poooooooor dogs are treated I am so SERIOUS - PLEASE READ THIS !!! IT is the most awful reasons why we have to shut these people down - you will cry after reading this article - this is the first time I've seen this one and it is ALL TRUE...there is no way this isn't true...too many pet shops are in business doing THIS ! I've bolded the parts I think everyone needs to read - PLEASE TELL YOUR FRIENDS about this ! In Uncaring Hands - Puppy Mills By Mary Anne Miller Commercial dog breeding facilities is a fancy word for a puppy mill. Part of a commercial dog breeding industry that is highly profitable to the owner, puppy mills are places of great suffering, and inferior care. Prolific in the United States, specifically in the Midwest; it is estimated that over 5,000 puppies get shipped from these facilities every week. The adult dogs are forced to live in cages, crammed together never being let out except for breeding purposes. Often more than one dog is forced to live together in these rabbit hutch-style cages, living amongst bodily waste, with no human or veterinary intervention. It is a miserable existence, one that does not even qualify to be called a life. The larger, more profitable facilities are hidden on large acres of land far away from the public eye. The transport of puppies is done under the cover of darkness, in semi trucks/trailers arriving to truck these puppies to pet shops and pet brokers across the United States. Before these pups can be transported, they need to be silenced. A trailer full of noisy puppies would draw attention to the load. Liquid sedative is poured down the throat of these puppies until they are unconscious. They are stacked in the trailer, laid out like cords of firewood, one on top of the other. The cargo is placed behind their bodies in the trailer effectively hiding the crime. Upon arriving, many puppies are dead, either from to much sedative, or being crushed to death by being in the bottom of the pile. These puppies are tossed into the garbage written down as “acceptable losses.” The survivors are either sold to pet stores, or pet brokers. Ads will show up on the Internet and local papers advertising purebred puppies for sale. For the smaller puppy mills, the transport conditions are just as severe. The pups are often crammed into the backs of pickup trucks for transport, having to endure unbearable heat in the summer, and in the winter survive the bitter cold. These are puppies from females that have been over-bred, (bred at first heat, then every six months after) receiving minimal veterinary care, low-quality food, lying in their waste for weeks/months on end. These puppies are born in misery on a breeding ground ripe for diseases and congenital defects. When the puppies wind up in pet stores, many pet store owners will vaccinate these puppies every week. So they could present them to the public as an epitome of health. The worst offending states are; Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania. In 1990 the frustrated Humane Society of the United States called for a boycott of puppy buying from these key states. The campaign garnered national attention The HSUS has been gravely concerned with puppy mills. Under their further efforts, in August 2001, seventeen states enacted a law known as the “Lemon Law;” If a sick puppy is purchased; this law allows the new owner of the puppy to receive reimbursement for veterinary bills from the establishment where the puppy was purchased from. The problem has been growing to the extent that there are now non-profit organizations dedicated to puppy mill rescue. Staffed by caring individuals, they have at the ready, numerous foster families waiting to take any puppies found living in these conditions of squalor. Many of these families know full well that puppy mill rescue must come sooner than later, as precious lives hang in the balance. Numerous puppies and dogs rescued from raids do not make it. But while they are living in foster care, they will know love and receive veterinary intervention for the first time in their lives. So how do you know that the puppy you are purchasing comes from a caring breeder and not a puppy mill? Contact the Better Business Bureau. See if the pet shop has complaints on their record. Stop purchasing from pet stores and private individuals if these people can not adequately provide the right papers: A Breed Registry Paper, not a certificate of health. If the owner says the puppies are from out-of-state, ask to see the interstate health certificate. Write letters about the puppy mills, to your congressman, local authorities, editors of your local newspaper, and the USDA whose job it is to monitor these places and inspect them, making sure they are up to standard quality care. There are warning signs: If a private seller will not let you see all the dogs, or let you into the house. If you hear dogs in distress, or are conscious of noxious odors coming from the house. A reputable breeder will let you interact with the mother and the father as well as the puppies. If you suspect anything, please report the location to the local animal control. You can also contact the dog clubs in the area, some of the members will know if puppy mills are operating. Until the public stops demanding purebred puppies from pet stores, this puppy mill industry will continue to thrive. In the meantime, the cost is great for the puppies and adult dogs, hapless victims forced to live in this harsh, uncaring environment. Before you purchase a purebred puppy, make sure the puppy comes from a reputable breeder and not a puppy mill. As usual tears were rolling down my face as I read this  I just don't understand how people can ignore this cruelty and not take action. Cindy & The Gang :aimeeyork |
Me too - and the sad part is - the more the fads of small dogs go on - the more small breed dogs are going to be MASS bred to be sold in PET STORES at high prices.... When you see a YORKIE IN A PET STORE - just PICTURE It's MOM SUFFERING in a PUPPY MILL and do NOT buy it ! Tell your friends this also IT's a VICIOUS CYCLE and starts with the Pet Store....When they are stopped from selling LIVE dogs - the MILLS will be hurt right where it counts and have to slow down on mass breeding. |
You're right that was sad! Makes me so mad that the Mills are still out there. I hope everyone reads this post. I did write letters, and have reported some Mills myself. But they seem to close down only long enough to open somewhere else. It's so sad!!!! :thumbdown :thumbdown :thumbdown :thumbdown What gets me is the Pet Stores even sell this way. I don't understand why they can't stop a Store form doing this. I always thought Mills are run down houses, and old buildings. But Pet Stores too! They should have there license pulled. Good Post Villette, the word needs to be spread! Gina & Princess say NO to Puppy Mills!!!!! |
I hope everyone reads this it was really good. It makes me sad that dogs and puppies have to go through this. People are just terrible who participate in this. |
Thank You Villette, this is a big help to people who truly don't understand what is going on every day. |
Thank you for sharing this with us . |
Gina...That was so smart and a misconception many people have. Pet Stores selling live animals are the basis of the Puppy Mills business. Hunte Corp is the biggest Broker in the country who kills millions of dogs and THEY are rich over the transportation and sale of all these puppies...but it ALL starts with Pet Stores. If we can stop them from selling dogs - the mass breeders would have no place to sell all these puppies - no customers - no business ....and they would have to find other ways to earn their blood money |
thats so sad. I agree, if the pet stores stopped the sale of live animals, it would really slow down all the abuse these poor animals are going through. i hope everyone reads this, it really opens your eyes into what's going on in every day life. :( |
Every Little Bit Helps You can help by going to the thread " Help our dogs and puppies need you." There is a link to your congressman and all you need to do is say a few words and it will HELP SO MUCH. |
There are so many reason why Pet Stores, shouldn't sell live animal's. Pet Stores are HORRIBLE. They have every animal under the sun, they smell, they have non-qaulified kid's working their who could give a rat's tail about the well being of an animal. |

I have to admit that this picture came as a real shock when I saw it . Every times I saw those horror pictures , I am asking myself " why do peoples have to be so crual with little animals that only want to love peoples ? |

I know we'll never eliminate this huge problem in our country - but other countrys do not allow Puppy Mills to operate - why can't WE TAKE CARE OF OUR BEST FRIENDS LIKE THEY DO ??? Britian has laws - they even banned shock collars - other people I've spoken with in other countrys don't have the problem the USA has - we won't talk about China here -they make me sick oh what they do with dogs and cats - the FUR TRADE IS ANOTHER THING THAT NEEDS TO BE BANNED |
omg it never ceases to amaze and disgust me what some people will do for money! poor dogs! |
I can't manage to read the entire article :( know what we should do..find somewhere to complain about puppy mills and send them letters explaining how cruel it is. If people are getting locked up for beating up their dog whats the difference with dogs being hurt in puppy mills? |
Morning V! I couldn't look at the pics...I have seen them before and they just make me SICK! I think it was a great idea for you to post this now...as, like you said, people will be buying puppies for gifts and will buy just about from ANYONE/ANYWHERE, to get one....I know people have been trying to shut down puppymills for a long time but, and I know alot of these puppies go to pet shops...What really needs to be done is NO MORE SELLING PUPPIES IN PET STORES! If this could be stopped I'm sure it would hurt the puppymills...There is a "kennel"? around me that is called the "Puppy Patch". When I was in the market for a yorkie I checked them out...they were sooooo nice, answered all of my questions and told me that they would be getting yorkies in a couple of weeks...Well, not knowing anything about this place I decided to do some investigating...A good friend of mine was a breeder of Bernese Mountain Dogs. I asked her about this place and she had never heard of it...however she did tell me to be cautious because it sounded like a mill...So.....I call the "puppy patch" back and begin to ask questions...they were very nice, BUT! then I started asking questions about where these pups came from....are the bred locally? Her whole attitude changed! she wasn't so friendly anymore..told me that the puppies came from Ohio, MO, Canada and a couple other places I can't remember. I asked "so they are flown here" she told me that some were but most of them they went and picked up....So,,....I guess you know I didn't end up buying one from there ...if you go to www.puppypatch.com you can see how clean and "pretty" the place looks....but, looks are deceiving! My cousing bought a mini daschaund from there...he is in noway a mini and he has LP...I'm not saying this can't happen to a dog from a breeder, because I know it can but most GOOD, CARING, Breeders won't breed an animal if they have this condition.... Just wanted to put my 2 cents in. Great post V! |
Great info as always V. Makes me think that another letter to my paper is due in time for those Christmas pups..:( If there was some way that we knew of, to stop this horrible business, which is all it is to them, it would be my lifes mission. But all the avenues I have tried seem to dead end, and it infuriates me.. which only makes me want to do more. ;) Great info, that needs to be told Again and Again... Until EVERYONE gets it. |
