a little upset and confused?! 1 Attachment(s) i'm a little upset. i sold two of Manolo's girl puppies to this lady with a family and all. And she recently gave me pictures of one of the pups, and said that her right leg had been broken. Well the picture she gave, shows her Left leg in a cast, and her right leg obviously being covered by a blanket to hide that it may be broken as well. It just seems really fishy, and I'm starting to think that both legs are broken. I sold the pup to her last week of december, she's only had them for a few months, and they are about 5 months old (born Oct). What are common injuries to have both front legs broken? She mentioned in her email that 2 xrays had been done and that 3 splints have been inserted. I emailed her to just be honest since I care about the pups as well... It just seems a lot for a poor puppy to go through. I know accidents happen, but this is a first for me and it's a bit sad to see. Any opinions? Or suggestions? Should I even be worried? The cutest thing is my DH is genuinely upset and concerned to the point of anger, his love for our yorkies has extended to their pups as well. If anyone has any similar experiences, please do share.. I'm in no way trying to call this new owner unfit, I'm just a little wary because of the fact she may not have been completely honest... I do know accidents can happen, so just pls try and put yourself in my shoes. |
I am so sorry about this. I would be devastated if someone I sold a pup to sent a picture such as that. I have not had any experience in this area but I just wanted to say how sorry I am for that little baby! |
2 Attachment(s) i just keep looking at the picture and thinking POOR THING!!! my god my heart just breaks. this is her with her littermates when she was just a pup..... and now? sniff sniff.... she's really grown hasn't she. |
You are breaing my heart with these pictures :( Can you make a visit to her home to check on the puppy? |
I will try and make arrangements. I just hope she is not taking offense?! I just emailed her and asked for "honesty" LOL. To be honest she seems a little ... sensitive. Maybe thats why she felt she needed to hide the other leg? What do you guys think? Obviously there is something not right with the pic... Common now... |
Is that someone's hand under her chin... looks like someone's arm with a long sleeve not a cover on the other leg...hmmmmmm is that a thumb poking out behind her ear & note the skin under the chin...maybe the picture is reversed? I had a Kodac program on my pc that always made pictures mirror imaged until I worked out how to fix it...I'd be a nosy breeder...didn't she say how it happened or supposably happened? Why did you sell two females...isn't that a rule of thumb never never two females from the same litter? |
I think Concretegurl might be right now that I look closer. I think that is someone's arm & hand. At first I did think that it looked like both legs were in casts/splints though. Poor little one. What a bum way to spend puppyhood. Hope she heals well and that you're able to find out more. So sorry. |

I didn't know about that rule of thumb. Is there a particular reason? She had said she would like to buy both so they can be together. I was at first a little taken aback by it also but she seemed like she had good intentions?? HmMmm..... IS there anyone who has bought 2 sisters before? I didn't think it was THAT unusual, just a little ambitious.. I mean I see people with 5 yorkies, and its not uncommon for some of my friends to have 2-3 yorkies - maybe thats why.... sigh - ohno i'm thinking horrible things now. And looking at the picture it does look like her arm and hand and thumb. Phew that makes a lot of sense to me now. Maybe she just accidently wrote her right leg was broken but meant her LEFT leg is broken.... Nonetheless, I will make time to go and visit them...hopefully it goes well... |
Yes, that's a hand holding her head. Think about this also. At least the leg is being fixed. If they were truly bad owners they wouldn't be going through all the expense of caring for an injured pup right? (oh and I would take two sisters because I love girl doggies!) But poor little girl! I felt bad for my boy just with his stiches from his neuter. I'd be besides myself if we'd have a broken leg. |

Poor baby! It could be that the picture was flipped and that it really is the puppy's right leg. These things can happen so fast. My daughter's yorkie recently had his back leg broken and had to have surgery. She was on the floor giving him kisses when her other yorkie, who is a tad bigger, ran up to them and in her haste to give kisses herself landed on the little one. Quick as a flash his leg was broken. |
I'm surprised that the family wanted to send you the picture and offered no explanation for how the leg was broken. On the bright side, the family did seek medical attention for the pup. |
I have been told before that the problem with this is not that they don't get along but that they get along too well. They are a little more difficult to train due to the fact that they are wondering or more interested in what the other was doing. Another factor could be that they tend to have the "pack" mentality and would gang up on other dogs. |
A breeders worries are NEVER over. I hope you get the whole story. God bless breeders! |

All I can say is...the owner let you know and it looks like the pup is getting good vet care...she could have kept it to herself and never told you... I had a friend whose Yorkie jumped out the car window instead of waiting for her to open the door when they got home...broke both legs, but they healed and she never allowed her in the car unleashed or uncrated... |
Its really easy for little ones to break their fragile bones, I can see how easily it could happen. Maybe she is embarrassed to admit that in the 2 seconds she had eyes off the pup, she jumped off the sofa resulting in the broken leg? or something similar. You know how easily these guys can get themselves into trouble. At least she has sought out vet care and is sending you updates :) that does suck for a puppy though, I hope she has a speedy recovery so she can be back to getting into trouble :) |
I have a breed that seems particularly susceptible to broken legs, the Italian Greyhound. It is what happens when kamakaze puppies have pencils for legs. There is one thing that concerns me about this story. Splints are not "inserted" into a dog's leg. Pins and plates, but not splints. Splints are rigid supports that go on the outside of the leg and get wrapped up. They get changed. It is advisable to xray the leg as it heals to make sure there are no complications and that it is healing and healing properly. I personally am not comfortable with splints, unless the fracture is a hairline fracture, but it is the cheapest way to have the leg fixed, requiring no surgery. It can also cause complications later in life, but I've had a dog whose legged was pinned and it healed crookedly. As for my dogs, I would only have an orthopedic surgeon handle the repair. I hope you had the owners sign a spay/neuter contract before you sold the puppies. |

If she was not honest, would she send you a picture at all? Maybe she jumped from a sofa or bed. I hope that's all it was. But yes, I would go visit, just out of concern. Hope all works out, sorry you are so upset. |
i think the baby looks beautiful and healthy looking her coat looks well kept [no matts] from what i see, the arm round her shows love ,and also she has had vet care,i imagin they sent u the pick to show what has happend to their poor wee baby, as op posted they are not hiding it from you, it would be good if you called to see her, it shows you care and also it would put ur mind at ease, please let us no how the visit went :D |
I think is was probably just an innocent mistake that she said right leg instead of left leg. I agree with Pat in that it looks like the lady is giving good care to the puppy. Accidents can happen so matter how careful we try to be. I have heard many stories of dogs jumping off furniture and breaking legs. Sadly I sold a puppy to someone one time and later that puppy jumped off the back of the couch, broke her neck and died instantly. It was really sad and the owner was devastated. You should just call the lady and talk to her, that's what I would do. |
Thanks for the support! She said she jumped off a low beach chair and it was how she landed that caused The broken leg. She said she meant to say Left leg and wasn't trying to lie... I guess she did get somewhat offended she even mentioned the vet bill being $800. Well at least I am more relieved thanks to this and my yt family! I just hope this isn't too much of an undertaking for her, I made sure to ask if she was knowledgeable of the breed before anything else and she assures me she was. I don't want to interfere too much , but I did offer to have future play dates. |

Poor baby! You know what as I look at the picture, I really think the other leg is broken, and thats why she covered it up. We all know how small yorkies legs are, and when you look at the picture, how she has the other leg covered up, it looks really "bulkie" Like there is a cast under there! |
Im sure she feels horrible too! Bevo broke his little leg when he was around 6 months old. He had been cuddling with my hubby on the couch and when I walked in the front door, he got so excited and jumped off the couch. In that split second, he was hurt. Things happen so fast sometimes, its hard to prevent them!! But he tottled around in his cast like it wasnt even there! Im just so glad she got her vet care! |

It's a horrible thing to happen to a little pup but sometimes accidents do happen. I think it is a good sign that the owner was honest and told you about it, I bet she was really nervous about telling you. I know when Poppy was small I had her a week or two and when I gave her a bath for the first time I noticed her tail was bent on the end, took her to the vets and he confirmed it was broken but was an old break and fully healed. I was SO nervous about telling her breeder next time I saw her because I didnt want anyone to think I was a bad owner and hurting my dogs because I would NEVER do that. (The vet said it was probably done while she was being born or not long after). But it is good that the owner of your pup is making sure the little one has proper vet care, hoping she has a speedy recovery! |
