Collar? I have read about Collapsed Trachea and all and know that using a collar isn't good for using when hooked to a lead. But Jed is so tiny and he sneeks up on us all the time. Was wondering about getting him a collar with a bell so we know where he is. Already had a mild accident last night with him getting smacked in the eye with a foot. Do any of you have a collar on there yorkie? |
I have a collar on my yorkie. He keeps it on all the time this is for identification purposes. I do have a harness for walking etc, but my yorkie often times will wiggle out of it. If your dog has a collapsed trachea it is advised that you get a harness for walking so there is no stress on the neck. But I always keep a collar on for id, rabies, microchip tags etc. |
I do have a harness for Jed when we go outside. Was just wanting the collar with the bell for locating purposes only. Just so we know where he is in the house. Little stinker is so quiet! |
Collar Yes you can put a collar on him with a bell........... Just don't use it to hook a lease on it while walking him. If you can't find a collar small enough go to the ferrat section or cat section and get a collar from there. |
I no longer use a collar, my Minnie had trachea irritation and I am pretty sure it was because of it. I just fastened her collar thru the loop on her harness for walking. Minnie does not go outside without us and is not free to roam the yard with all the mud we have in it. She goes on the puppy pad inside. BTW MInnie is on antibiotics because of the trachea irritation. |
NEVER will I put a collar on my Yorkies...I don't really like collars period...I use harnesses with the ID tags on the D ring (where the leash attaches) it makes a jingly sound, I'd put a bell on a harness personally...collar also irritate their neck. Some ppl use a break away collar-yes they are safer...to hold tags/bells not for walking and yes a break away does prevent strangulation and chocking. Leave it loose. |
Hi there...I dont use collars on neither of my dogs. For my yorkie I use harness vests and harness dresses that I mostly make myself. If I buy a dress I add a D-ring to it . There are members on here too that sell beautiful harness dresses and vests. The reason I make my own is #1 I add buttons cuz I have found Velcro does not hold up under the pressure of the dog pulling and #2 cuz I line them with satin so they dont cause hair breakage. :D |
The collar that I was looking at was a break away collar. But the only collars that I have found with the little bell are cat collars. Was just thinking of buying both, and taking the bell off the cat collar and putting it on the toy break away collar. As I said before, I would only use this for location purposes. Location in the HOUSE that is. He will NEVER be outside by himself. We have to many hawks around. I am just wanting to have it on him so we always know where he is in the house so we don't accidently step on him. As I also said before, he is so quiet! He sneeks up on you and you just don't realize he is there. With the bell at least we would know he is close. |
if you decide to use a collar on your little one, make sure that it is a breakaway collar. this way if he should get caught up on something, it will break away and he will not get caught on something. Chattiesmom on here has some of these, you can search her and she can help you. She has beautiful silk collars and harnesses. :) |
I only use a harness on Pixie. I have also attached her ID tag and rabies tag to the harness. Won't ever put a collar on her. |
Jedsmom - I do make silk collars with break-a-way buckles and I do have bells and would be glad to help you. To be honest, though, the break-a-ways only give a false sense of safety. The buckles that I have take a considerable amount of pressure to release. Bells hang down and can get stuck in numerous ways that we would never think of - floor vents, a loose string in the carpet, etc. and I honestly don't think a tiny could exert enough pressure to make the collar release without causing damage. The safest option for a bell is the "D" ring on a harness. |
Corky wear one, But only for his tags. We use an harness to walk him. With those tags making noise keeping up with him will be impossible around the house. |
I had a collar with a bell on my puppy when I first got her. One day I noticed the bell was gone. I couldn't find it anywhere. I even looked all over the yard. I called the vet and Calleigh had to go in for an x-ray. That was the end of the bell for me... :) I have a collar on Calleigh at all times. She has her ID and Microchip info on it. I always use a "harness" when walking her. I didn't know about collapsing trachea when I first got her. I'm so glad I found out about it. |
I have two Collars the both of mine wear (not at the same time though). Normal is a Flea Collar with a set of Bells on each of them. We have a lot of transient animals coming thru our yard, just extra protection. When I take them/either out, I put their "Formal" Collar on, which has all the ID and other Tags on it. I NEVER hook a Leash to either of the Collars, and use a Harness when walking or for security in the Car. |
Mine wears and collar with her rabies tag and a tag with her name and my cell number on it. I love the fact that it jingles when she moves so I can hear where she is. |
With 5 people in our house Ziva needed to wear a bell when we first got her, and some ID in case she got out when someone was careless with a door. It has worked great over the past 2 years, if I don't hear her jingle for a while I go looking for her-little troublemaker. She asks for her "necklace" to be put back on after her bath! Chatties mom made her a great silk collar with a silver bell- (not breakaway)and matching harness that doesn't break off her fine hair. Beautifully made! |
I use breakaway collars hat I bought from eBay. It doesn't take much pressure on the collar for it to fall off, which makes it great for ID purposes and for placing a bell. I use it since a little someone is always underfoot, or if he bell stops ringing and I can't see him, he's definitely doing something naughty! I've come home to a collarless dog. Little stinker was trying to break into he kitchen. Kaji was happy and safe, and the collar was dangling on the gate leading to the kitchen. the collars I buy are all $2 or less. :) |
I never use a collar. Having lost my dear yorkie Mariposa (Mari) in June, due to severe collapsed trachea I would never put one on or recommend it to anyone. It was a horrible condition that she had since she was 1 1/2 yrs she was 5 when she died. It was a very long road and a terrible death. Although it turns out it could have been from the her fathers side. Yorkies and Maltese have a tender trachea. Please be very careful. You just don't know, if a collar gets pulled a little tight it might just set it off for a lifetime of hell. With the bad case she had, it was almost amazing she lived as long as she did. We had to be so careful not to let her get too excited, too warm, etc. It actually got to where I wouldn't let company come over because I didn't know how she would be affected. A very long road. I loved her dearly, she was such a beauty and so sweet......sorry, I'm going on...:( |
I just took Zach's collar off. He has such a skinny neck that I can't seem to find a comforable collar that he's happy with. The one I took off just about fit him but he kept scratching at it all day. It was great to be able to hear him but I felt so bad for him he looked so unhappy. He has a harness for outdoors and I wanted to keep a collar on him around the house with his rabbies and id tags but it's not worth making him miserable. |
Mine wore the break away cat collars with a bell when they were tiny. Now that they are bigger, they both have a collar for tags only. We always use a harness for potty breaks. |

Buster uses collars for fashion and ID and a harness for walking. I also put an id tag on his harness just in case. I also have a hook on blinking light that I put on him when we are walking a night so I can see him. When he was a puppy we used to shout out little man walking so we would be aware he was moving about. |
I keep a harness (buddy belt) on Snickers at all time. He wears an ID tag and bell on it. I'm also with the others who say if they can't hear the jingle of the bell, their dog is in trouble! I've got a little troublemaker too. When we got Snickers he had a tiny collar on. A few days after he came to live with us he was somehow able to hook it in his mouth and it started to choke him. He screamed like it was bloody murder! My husband, who usually carries a pocket knife did not have it (for seemingly the first time ever!) and we could hardly undo it, because the dog was in such a state of panic. Never again will he wear a collar because of that alone. It was a scary moment. He also used to try to bite his harness all the time too and liked to chew on it. But, since we switched to a buddy belt, he doesn't do it anymore. The buddy belt is much more difficult for him to get in his mouth because of the position it sits on the chest. |
My last yorkie, Chelsea, had a collapsing trachea. She never wore a collar at any time in her life. Her vet led me to believe it was a genetic condition and that collars can make it worse, but not cause the condition. Is this right??? |
I keep a collar on Jackson 24/7 with ID tags. It's not worth the risk to me to not have one on. Maybe if I lived by myself, but I live with others and if by chance a door got opened, or he got loose, etc, I want him to have his collar on. He is microchipped also for an added layer of security but not everyone even knows about microchips and I think it's much easier to have a collar with ID on. My family, growing up, returned countless dogs back to their owners within minutes because of a collar/ID. I recently had a stray dog come to my house and I returned him to his owner within 30 minutes because I dialed the number on the tag quickly. I was on my way out the door so would not have had time to take him to the vet to scan him, etc right away so he would have sat in a crate while I went to class for a few hours and then when I got home I would have been able to take him... but still, that could seem like an eternity to an owner who is missing their dogs. He does wear a harness always for walks/potty breaks/etc but I don't see how keeping a harness with tags on all day long is ANY safer than keeping a collar on.... harnesses can get hung up on just as many things as a collar, and they seem like they'd be a lot more uncomfortable to keep on all day. Jackson usually sleeps "naked" and I do that simply for comfort... so I'll take collar off for bedtime a lot of times but right back on it goes in the AM! |

I am so sorry for your loss!!! I know she was loved for her 5 short years. |
Remy wears a harness. I put it on in the morning and take it off after her evening walk. If I don't put it on my dh just cant seam to put it on right for the morning walk (he walks the pack in the morning). I hate to admit... but she has several that match her outfits! I love the harness I got from Chattiesmom... it is beautiful. Cindy also included a cute clip that I have put her tags and id on and I can clip it to the harness of the day:p I do have a decorative collor-- from time to time I put it on her when we go out.. |
T-shirt dress "harnesses" well I hope!...mine only wear actual harnesses with the tags on D ring when either I go out, we walk or they go in the yard...not for extended periods....would hipe no one would lave a collar on for extended periods-especially on long haired dogs, or even if hair is short...just the sheer irritation of it. If they get out the barricaded entrance way while unharnesses here they're microchipped...just about everyone here knows my lil guys from walking them all the time, and we live in a suberban cul-de-sac...neighbor helped catch Scoobers once when we were firemen let him out! now they wear harnesses when I leave just in case-you never know!
