Grooming is too expensive! I took Roxie for her grooming at Petsmart this morning, and when all was said and done it cost me $75 (including tip to the groomer)! That was the most I have ever paid for grooming. Granted, DBF accidentally told them to brush her teeth when he dropped her off, which added to the total. I usually do that myself at home. I need some tips here. I can't afford this kind of expense every two months. Should I try to learn to groom her myself? Is it very difficult? I am most worried about trimming her nails. Bathing her isn't an issue, I already do that myself all the time. It's the hair trimming and nail cutting that are the issues. Help, suggestions, please? |
Wow!!! Don't have any tips...a lot has to do with where you live. My groomer here only charges me $30. |
I had 4 done yesterday cost me $118. LOL and i gripped about it to DH :D |
mickey only got groomed 3x a year... but every time we do groom him its 1/4 inch 80$+tip is too much to get it done every 2 months. it worked out fine! his hair never got tooooo long. |
For 3 I pay $190.00. Not at all cheap but she does a good job. |

For mine the ones that wear shorter coats i get cut 3 x a year..I do some touch ups when needed on ears & nails |
I know what you mean I paid about the same at Petsmart and I ended up in grooming school. :) now I not only save money but make money on the side :) |
My groomer is a mobile groomer. He charges $55 and I give him a $10 tip. Grooming is expensive and if you can learn how to do it, it would be a good idea. |
I take my 3 to Petsmart to be groomed, they do an excellent job and it is only $40.00 for each dog. They bathe, groom and trim their nails. They will charge extra if they are matted or to file their nails. |
Yikes! I had no idea is was so expensive. I groomed my last yorkie myself for 11 years. I plan on doing the same with my new pup. |
Grooming can be very expensive in certain areas. I feel fortunate that I pay $45.00 with a tip of 20%. She does an excellent job. I can wait there in the shop. She'll ask me if I like her hair, this way, or that way. I'm always very happy with the way Calleigh looks. I think if you take grooming classes you would also need to buy a couple of the things that attach to the table to hold their head and behind in place. I would imagine that will be another expense..I would be afraid to cut the nails. Calleigh just doesn't want anyone touching them. In fact I'll hold her so the groomer can do it without her squirming to get away. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. :) |
My Petsmart charges $45, and a mobile groomer charges $60. Petsmart did such a bad job last time I'm not taking mine there anymore. But $60 is a lot of money and he needs it every 3 weeks or so his hair grows so fast. We have small clippers that we use for our horses ears, and we are trying to use those, and a book and youtube videos, to learn how to do the basics. I think we will take him in to a professional a few times a year though. Trimming the pads, ears, and butt is not too hard, but the face, legs and body are tricky to make it look right. We are also going to buy a grooming noose that holds the dog in place. That's probably the most difficult part, keeping them still. For trimming nails, I am terrified of hitting the quick, so once a week I clip just the smallest amount off of them. That way I'm less likely to hit the quick, since they never grow very long. |
Petsmart here only charges 40.00 for wash, clip, cut and ears. I only plan on taking him in when he needs a cut and his nails. I can wash him myself in between. |
I pay $50-$75 for grooming. Last year I started grooming Tila myself, she's more comfortable at home and she is such a good girl when being groomed. Its not hard, just remember it's only hair and if you mess up it will grow back. I was nervous the first couple times I did her hair myself, but I'm not anymore. I also do her brother's hair as well. He's a terrier cross. The only thing I don't do and take them in to get done is the nails. I'm scared to do nails. |
Wow!! That's a lot! I groom both of mine myself... It really isn't hard. I have Couver's hair cut down because he has a silky coat but am still working on figuring out how to cut Khloe's cottony coat. I definitely prefer having them at home and not in some strange person's care while they get cut. I've heard too many horror stories to ever take mine to a groomer again. |
