help... My Gizmo has gotten ahold of and eaten an entire chocolate bar...foilf and all. Found it in my daughters room. Should I give him something to make him thro up or what. I FREAKIN out here right about now! He weighs 11 pounds. Any suggestions? |
I would call your vet's 24-hour number. |
I know you already know that Chocolate is bad for dogs but this kinda breaks it down. I would call your vet immediatley!!! Please keep us updated! Hannah Can Dogs Eat Chocolate ? By DogNutrition.com It is a very bad idea to feed your dogs chocolate because it contains a chemical called theobromine. Dogs can't metabolize theobromine as efficiently as humans so it builds up in their systems until it reaches a toxic level of concentration, which may lead to a variety of problem with the most serious being death due to cardiac arrest.Keep in mind that the less the dog weights, the more you should be worried because the toxicity level is higher. When I think of chocolate, I think of Hershey so I went to their website to find out just how many mg of theobromine is in one ounce of chocolate. HERSHEY'S KISSES (milk chocolate) 58mgs per oz HERSHEY'S (milk chocolate) bar 55 mgs per oz SPECIAL DARK (sweet chocolate) bar 134 mgs per oz HERSHEY'S cocoa 737 mgs per oz As you can see, the number varies greatly depending on the type of chocolate. Milk chocolate has the lowest amount of theobromine per oz compared to dark chocolate. Raw coca being the highest with twelve (12x) times more theobromine then milk chocolate. I would definitely encourage you to call a vet if your dog ingests a sizeable amount of cocoa. |
Here is a link to a site that shows the product you would need and what to do if you can't get to a vet. http://www.dogownersdigest.com/news/...dog-care.shtml |
Please let us know how your baby is doing once you have taken care of him!! |
Yes, I just called the ER Vet in the next town. They said to bring him in now because it turns to poison in their system. She was not shy about telling me they would need 100 dollars up front just to see him and the Dr would give a high end and a low end estimate after he is seen. Since the kids and I have barely (i kid you not) 5 dollars on us this is not an option. I asked if they would work with me and she said no..to pray for the best. So what the HELL is that? MY daughter is in tears and don't know whether to give him some ipicac or what to do. |
It is no substitute for a vet, but give him burnt toast. I just read on several websites that if you don't have access to a vet to give them burnt toast. It is supposed to have similar effects to the charcoal. It is not the same, but may help. |
Sorry, give him the ipicac if you have it. Burnt toast after he expells the choc. Sounds crazy I know, but burnt toast can't hurt. |
I would follow the advice of the YT'ers - about the ipecac and burnt toast. But I do want to tell you that my schnauzer (16 lbs) at a whole pound of godiva chocolates that my hubby had bought for me for Christmas (a few years ago) and hid (obviously not very well, huh). It did not phase her one bit. So, I would do all the home remedies - but know that it may be OK. Also, my sister-in-laws Bijon at a full sack of hersheys kisses and didn't get sick either. Good luck with everything. |
how much ipicac? Is it to late? it's been 45 minutes. |
I don't think it's too late. If chocolate poisoning is discovered and treatment begun within three hours before any overt signs have developed the veterinary surgeon will often empty the stomach by giving a drug to produce vomiting. This may be followed by an adsorbent charcoal mixture into the stomach. This will help stop further absorption of the theobromine and reduce the signs that subsequently develop. http://www.parkvets.com/petsandvets-chocolate.html |
it says two to three teaspoons only once. I would go with two since he's small. You should get both parts done within four hours of eating the choc. Sooner the better |
From what I just read on the internet, I agree with the other posts. It is not too late...but dont wait any longer! |
Oh I hope Gizmo is OK!!! Please keep us posted!!! |
Not to scare you...just so you know what to watch for..... The the first signs of chocolate poisoning are vomiting and diarrhea, increased urination and nausea. These can progress to cardiac arrhythmias and seizures. |
Son ran to the store down the street. I will try 2 tsp. and the burnt toast. Poor thing has the "sweetest" kisses ever now. |
Gizmo is praying for his fellow Mogwai... Stupid Hershey bar... |
Deb and Maya are sending puppy kisses to Gizmo!!! |
I thought you had the syrup, sorry. You can use three percent hydrogen peroxide instead if your son hasn't left. |
Found this: Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which are both methylxanthines. The amount of methylxanthines present depends on the type of chocolate (see chart below.) In general, the less sweet the chocolate, the more toxic it could be. In fact, unsweetened baking chocolate contains almost seven times more theobromine as milk chocolate. Methylxanthines can cause CNS stimulation, tachycardia, and tremors. Signs seen with chocolate toxicosis include vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, polyuria, polydipsia, lethargy, tachycardia, cardiac arrhythmias, seizures, and death. Based on ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) experience, mild signs occur in animals ingesting 20 mg/kg and severe signs are seen at doses over 40mg/kg. Type of Chocolate Methylxanthines-mg/oz (approx): Milk chocolate 50-62 Semi Sweet 160 Baking chocolate 428-440 Estimates of the smallest amounts that may be fatal are: **Small dogs such as Chihuahua and toy poodles is 4-10 ounces of milk chocolate or 1/2 to 1 ounce of baking chocolate ** Medium dogs such as dachshunds and cocker spaniels is 1 to 1-1/2 pounds of milk chocolate and 2-3 ounces of baking chocolate. ** Large dogs such as Labradors and Collies is 2 to 4-1/2 pounds of milk chocolate or 4 to 8 ounces of baking chocolate. When people call and want to know if the hershey's kiss their lab ate is going to kill it, I tell them about this to put it in perspective. Margaret Moorman: In calculating a dose, I would recommend using the worst case scenario. For example, where it says milk chocolate 50-62 mg/oz, I would use 62 unless it has something else on the label. Elizabeth Warren: Definitely Margaret, but a lot of people seem to have gotten the idea that chocolate=death, period. Brenda: I had a 55# Bassett mix that ate a whole batch of no bake oatmeal chocolate cookies. Did not affect him at all. What is in a Hersey chocolate bar? Elizabeth Warren: I get a lot of candy calls (milk chocolate). They really need to eat a bunch to become toxic. Brenda, I think they make baking chocolate in bars as well as candy bars (milk chocolate). Margaret Moorman: Hershey's milk chocolate bars contain 55.5 mg/ox of theobromine and 6.45 mg/oz of caffeine. If a 5# dog ingested a 1.55 oz. chocolate bar, the dose would be 42.3 mg/kg. Elizabeth Warren: Even small amounts of chocolate can and do cause GI upset. Yep; the smaller the dog, the smaller the dose to toxicity. http://www.vspn.org/Library/Misc/VSPN_M02714.htm |
he had the ipicac over 15 minutes ago and he hasn't thrown up yet..been hacking tho. He has a very loose stool. Gonna be a long night. Please pray for my Giz. Thank you all for your good thoughts and wishes. All I could think to do was get on the computer and would have lots of help from you girls.. I'll check back a little later. He's just laying there, poor thing. Oh I hate this. |
If he doesn't throw up in the next 15 minutes or so, I would give him the other teaspoon of the syrup. It said two or three. He might need the third one. My Gizmo and I will worry along with you tonight. Good Luck, you have our prayers. |
I wish I knew of some magic answer. There is no fix. The only thing a vet can do is to make them throw up and give them charcoal to soak up stuff from their stomach. I'm just hoping that since he weighs 11 pounds that the candy bar won't have much of an effect on him. What kind of chocolate bar was it and what size? |
Oh, wow! I just saw this thread! Is he ok??? Poor little guy! I hope you guys are doing ok!!!! Lucky sends hugs & kisses to him!! |
Im just now reading this. How is he? I will keep him in my thoughts and prayers. |
I hope all is well :( Poor baby |
Giz has thrown up 3 times with the two teaspoons of ipicac, it took 30 minutes. That stuff DOES work. He wants nothing to do with the burnt toast someone suggested. But I will try again. Only had diarreah once. All this happened 2 1/2 hours ago. It wasn\'t a Hershey bar, I was using that as an amount est. It was a milk chocolate foil covered turkey..for thanksgiving I\'m guessing. Bout big as your fist. Must have smelled it thru the foilf. He ate the WHOLE thing, foil and all. Anyway, he\'s just laying here pitiful, doesn\'t want to be held. He did seem to lose quite a lot when he threw up. Wonder if he needs some pedialite now. His belly is bloated and hard. He wants to go out but it\'s dark outside and need to know if he gets the poops again. Giz is my heart, and I just hurt for him. |
I don\'t know if you should or shouldn\'t give pedialite. I\'m inclined to think that you shouldn\'t since you don\'t want anything in their stomach to go further. I hope someone else on here knows more than I do, which is nothing! :( |
You all have been a great source of support, and your sincerety means a lot. Will keep you posted. ~Denise |
