Worried about Charlie As I have posted in the past Charlie does have pancreatitis, its been almost a year since our big incident when we were diagnosed ($3000) and I have noticed the last 2 days that he is not eating his chicken. he always has it in the morning and then again when I come home. but the last 2 days when I get home the chicken from the morning is still there. I notice he is drinking a bit more than usual. He is going to the bathroom normally and he is eating an occasional treat. Tonight when I came home his face did not look just right, you know how they can make expressions and you just know, well when I went to hug him i noticed he was shaking. I looked and the chicken was still there so I got out some chicken lunch meat, he ate some of that and I put his shirt on him in case he was just chilly. He did stop shaking but he just doesnt seem like himself. Now I put new chicken out each time I dont make him eat the dried up chicken I throw it out. I gave him a pepcid ac and half of a reglan as the vet instructed but if he doesnt eat tomorrow i am going to take him in. Could he be tired of chicken and if so what would I feed him then? He is not one to try new things and the vet doesnt want him to go more than 24 hrs without eating due to his system. I just cant imagine going through what I did last year it was so scarey. :( Please say some prayers for Charlie. |
I'll definitely say prayers for Charlie. Would be be allowed to eat some turkey? How about some baby cereal? I hope he is OK. Sending good thoughts. |
Poor Charlie! Is plain chicken the only thing you are feeding? Unfortunately, that is not adequate nutrition for a dog. He is missing other essential nutrients. |
My Molly had Chronic Pancreatitis and I was always able to tell if she was about to slip. She would do the same thing Charlie was doing, I got into the Vet pronto had blood work done and got her started on Sub Q fluids. I always had Pepcid and Carafate on hand to give when I noticed signs. Prayers for Charlie. |
The vet only wants Charlie to eat the boiled chicken and then he has a low allergen food that he doesnt really like its crunchy and it gets mixed in but it always gets left in the bowl. He does like fruit and some veggies but he is not interested in those either right now. I think my biggest concern is the drinking, it is so reminiscent of last year when he got so dehydrated. He just went to his bowl and looked at it, the crunchy food was there and he walked away so I got out the boiled chicken and he didnt want that either. I dont want to force food on him as I know that can make the pancreatitis act up more. Im gonna make an appt in the morning I cant let it get as bad as it was last yr he lost 6 pounds he was just bones with a thin layer of skin over them, that was before we knew what was wrong and before we found the vet that knew what to do. its gonna be a long night. |
Oh my goodness, 6 pounds. Definitely see your vet in the morning. You and Charlie will be in my thoughts. I hope he is doing better tomorrow. Keep us updated. |
Im gonna go curl up with Charlie I will check in later. thank you for the prayers |
Bailey Blue has chronic pancreatitis and IBD. I have consulted with Susan at Holistic Pet Care Holistic Veterinarian Pet Nutritionist there are a number of other yt members on here that use her too. I've almost lost Bailey 3 times from this. Charlie will be in my prayers. Quote:

I'm so sorry he isn't himself. Yes. He could be tired of chicken. Ask your vet if you could switch around to turkey, so that he could have some variety. Does he like veggies? Carrots, green beans, etc? How about baked sweet potato? That would give him a bit of variety. He could be having an attack of pancreatitis. From what I've read, it just pops up from time to time and if the vet prescribes antibiotics, then it will help them fight it off. Does he take any pancreatic enzyme supplement? If not, perhaps your vet might prescribe it. Let us know how Charlie is tomorrow. |
Well, I just saw that he does like some veggies, but maybe he'd like them better in chicken broth? |
oh I am sending prayers and good thoughts for your furbut.. I hope all goes well at the vet tomorrow |
Sending prayers for Charlie. My mix has chronic pancreatitis and the vet has us giving her 1/2 pepcid every morning and it has helped a lot. She still has times though, and it is indeed scary. My male cavalier had acute pancreatitis last summer and THAT was really scary (and expensive) as well. I wish they could talk, and tell us what they're feeling! Enjoy snuggling with Charlie. |
Well charlie ate two small pieces of treat and then threw up :( He has to go to the Dr tomorrow. He seems ok now but it came up almost in the same form as it went down so no digestion. he is at least active, if i get him in tomorrow maybe we can get it taken care of before to much damage is done. |
Poor Charlie. :( |
Sending our wishes for a speedy recovery for Charlie Love From Anita and the Gang Zoe, Zach, Chloe, Cleo, and Oliver |
Update Took Charlie to the vet and they ran a Ol totalbody function Sa120 K-9 blood panel and did a fecal test wont have results until 1 or 2 this afternoon. they did say that he looks healthy, his abd was soft and his lungs were clear he has a good heart beat so all was good there. His stool is very soft though and today is kind of orange in color. they gave him a AB Cortisteroid injection to increase appetite. they had me take 2 cans of Z/D ultra home to try on him, they said it is possible that he is getting tired of chicken but we still have to look at the symptoms. OMG he weighs 13 pounds  LOL I was shocked I have been posting all over that he weighs 10 guess I will have to recant my statements. they say it is a good weight for him but they dont want him any bigger because of his bone structure. I had them check his knees since I have read so much about that in here and she said they are very tight no problems there. So for now we wait, please continue to pray for him and I will update soon as I get results. |
Lab results. Ok so all of Charlies labs came back great except the pancreatic enzyme and the WBC Dr says WBC is elevated to to inflamation caused by the pancreatitis bout. SO cortisteroid shot should take care of the bout. We still have to do the pepcd ac (1/2 every morning) and now I have to find a food he will eat. He did not like or even try the canned food but I knew that he wouldnt. They did suggest some other meats to let him try and they copied some pages out of a book they had with cook at home meals for babies like Charlie so I am ging to look at that. The stool results will not be back until tomorrow but Dr feels the loose stool is due to the pancreatic issue. He is plenty hydrated and she was very impressed with his electrolytes. she was afraid they would be very bad since his diet is mostly just protein but he must be getting enough carbs and vitamins with the fruit and veggies that he does eat so that is good news. I think that covers everything for now. Have to go cook some meat now will check back in later |
So glad to hear he is doing well. :) He'll probably go back to loving the chicken shortly. :) It sounds like the vet didn't mention that because high fat foods can trigger pancreatitis, there are many people foods that should never be given to pancreatitis patients including lunch meat. Some meats are fine under the supervision of a vet (lean chicken, sometimes white meat turkey, etc.). If he won't eat the kibble, then he does need to have a balanced homecooked diet (if you want to go that way). A veterinary nutritionist can create a recipe for him. If it isn't balanced, it can lead to very serious health problems over time. Bloodwork is not a great indicator of whether or not a diet is working well. We have dealt with pancreatitis here. My girl does eat homecooked food because she has so many medical issues. It has to be balanced though... If you just put the kibble down that the vet wants your pup on, how long will he go without eating? |
Praying for Charlie and for a speedy recovery. Hugs from me & Zhoie XXOOXX |

Well Charlies diet is mainly boiled chicken the lunch meat he had yesterday and the evening before was just to get him to eat something but it wasnt the cause of the flare. I am vry careful with what I feed him I read labels and everything to make sure the fat content is none or as low as possible. The pages they gave me on home cooked food were very detailed and Ill have to use my diabetic scale to work it out, they did suggest trying to switch to ground turkey to see if he likes that, if I put out the can food down and he doesnt want it, he simply wont eat but as I had said the vet doesnt want him going more than 24 hours without eating anything. I was told this when we were trying to change his food several months ago and believe me he held out so tonite I bought ground sirloin and boiled it then ran it under extremely hot water to rinse off any remaining fat. He ate that right up so it may just be time for a change of meats and then continue the veggies and fruits. |
Hope Charlie continues to improve. Good luck! |
I'm glad he's eating and I hope he feels much better soon.:) |
Hope Charlie feels better and better each day!! Good luck with the new foods!! Sending good thoughts! |
How is Charlie doing today? Did you receive more test results? Sending best wishes. |
Update Sorry guys yesterday was a booger at work. Still have no stool results they are hoping they come in todat if then then it will be monday I guess because it had to be sent out. Charlie is doing better though, he is loving the ground sirloin and as someone had suggested I added brown rice he is eating that up like candy. he has a happy face again we are doing 1/2 a pepcid ac in the am he does not care for that much lol I guess as a rule we will continue to do that for safety measures. We had terrible storms here last night so the poor thing shook all night long I was afraid that he would relaps from the stress but he seems ok today gobbled up breakfast and is just relaxing now. Soon as I get the results I wll let you guys know. I really do appreciate all the support. Its hard to try and get "non" yorkie people tp understand when these things happen witth hem. I have friends that say "OH just let him ride it out" or "I would never spend that kind of money on a dog" but hes not "a dog" he is family to both me and my husband and you always take care of family. well anyway thank you all Ill talk with you all in a bit |
I'm sorry Charlie is scared of storms. I hope he continues to improve. It sounds as though he is doing well. Those looked like some awful storms you had. |
I'm so sorry! It never seems to fail that things like this always happen on Friday night...can he have vegis? Mine are picky eaters but if I eat raw vegis and then hand feed it to them they're all about getting what they perceive as people food...again I know nothing about pancreatitis though. |
He does eat some veggies but not raw i usually mix them in with the chicken or now i guess it will be the sirloin he is doing prett well though. I have to consider one of those thunder shirts for him though many ppl say they work really well. he just has a terrible time with storms. |
Glad to hear Charlie is eating and doing well. Sorry you had to deal with thunderstorms. Not helpful! Hope you hear good news from the vet on Monday. |
I saw the commercial for that and the first thing that came to mind was OMYorkies it's an electrocution shirt! Then I saw it...it's like a magical magnetic bracelet for arthritic people I think...going to get one for Elvis now too as I read epileptics have been using them... I usually do a RAW lunch here but it has been so cold I've been boiling vegis (I was lazy and bought a mix bag of cauliflower, broccoli, and carrots) in chicken broth...they've been going nuts over it! Of course I've been slicing the stem on the broccoli someone told me (dunno if its true or not) that you are less likely to get gassy from it if you slice the stem and boil it-releases gasses or something... So glad to hear he's doing better! We'll keep him in our thoughts and hope it's all blue sky from here. I thought he was pulling a 'my dog's' maneuvers and waiting until Friday at 7 p.m. to ensure all vets have definitely left for the night or weekend before getting ill... Quote:
