My new rescue! 3 Attachment(s) Been surfing rescues sites awhile now...at least 2 yrs. I saw two adorable dogs on the local news this morn. They were showing some dogs from the local Spca. I shuffled off after work, and found Jillian, a 4yr old owner surrender terrier mix. We had a meet & greet...and she was really stinky...(nothing like 'ode de kennel smell) She's a little bigger than my dogs, and her card stated she loved other dogs, kids & cats. She looks rather like an over-grown multi-colored yorkie/s**tzu mixed. Here are some pics of her, she just had her bath...(no more 'ode de kennel smell for her. She was an angel in the car, and in the bath. Only problem I foresee at the moment, is she jumps in my lap & "guards" me from the other dogs. She did this several times of which I placed her on the floor, & told her no. She is going to have to learn that laps are shared here...lol No snapping yet, just the growls when she is on my lap. I recognized the alert mode, & hopefully we stop that asap. On the floor, she was curious & did get along with the other dogs well. Buttons on one hand is upset at the moment, that I had the nerve to put her in the heated bed! Jillian is still damp, so I put her there. From what I understand, Jillian spent her 4th birthday in the shelter...Jan. 7th, so unfortunately for Buttons, she will have to share her B-day party with Jillian on Tuesday. I don't think she'll mind too much though. So far, I don't regret my decision, she's been an angel, follows me everywhere, & showers me with kisses. I really do get the sense that she is grateful to be here! Please welcome her to our family, as I'm sure there is some yorkie in her somewhere...lol:) |
Congrats on your new baby! What a cutie. |

Awe, what a little sweetheart! Congrats on your new baby and welcome Jillian to YT. We will be looking for more pictures of you as you learn to love your new family. Bless you taking this sweet cutie and giving her the home she so deserves. |
What a sweetie and I'm glad she has a forever home.:) |
What a sweetie...Congrats on your new baby. |
Awww! She's too cute! |
Congratulations! She's lucky to find her forever home! She is really a cutie! |
Thanks everyone, she is doing great. Very loveable, & the first night in the bed with the furkids went well. |
Hello Greater Cincinnati area neighbor! What a darling rescue and bless you for giving her a new home. I have one that can do that in a lap and when we were at a Yorkie Meetup and she did that, the trainer said to do exactly what you did, and put her on the floor. No guarding aloud. Anyway, Congrats on your new one. :) |

I purchased a new pet insurance plan with her as well. It's specifically geared toward adopted shelter dogs. It covers any unknowns that might appear the first year. First month was included in the adoption, then it's only 14.95 a month. I did this because the only info the shelter had on her was she was a turn-in by an elderly person who no longer could care for her. She is up to date on her shots, but will be going monday to the vet, because they don't know about her rabies expiration date. She is a little skinny, so I want to have her checked for worms as well. The slight panic I felt when she went into guard mode, was the only doubts I had, and that was fleeting. It seems like she's always been here already. |
What a little cutie!!! Love her eyes, they say " Hug me, love me mama!!" Congrats, you did a great thing!! |
Congratulations! Congratulations on your new pup. I'm sure she will fit right in and be loved as much as your other pets. She is a very lucky dog to have such a nice mommy to rescue her. Best of luck with you new furbaby. :) |
Adorable and smart.:D Couldn't ask for more. Blessings for adopting Jillian. ~Joanne~ |
1 Attachment(s) She is sooooo cute. She looks like she has alot of shih tzu in her. She looks almost like my Oliver who is a full shih tzu who we rescued just before Christmas. He was left in a carton by our drug store with his 3 sisters. He was only 6 weeks old but strange at it seems he was almost pee pad trained when we got him. We don't know anything about his background but he's ultra smart. If your little girl has shih tzu in her she is going to turn out to be a great dog. If she isn't already. They are a little possessive because Oliver came in and try to take over. Well anyway lots of luck with your little girl and I hope you will be as happy with her as we are with Oliver. |
Thanks lexi! She is turning out to be pretty great...just glued to me for the time being, lol. |
awww she's adorable and bless your heart for taking her under your wing. My rescue Savannah has mommy lap issues as well. I do the same thing say no and put her on the floor when she does this with my daughters pom...no reward for this behavior technique and it does work |
I'm glad things are working out so well. I'm happy for her, too.:) |
AWWWW what a cute little girl she is. Congrats on the new family member.:animal36 |
Update Well, today was the day I was to take Jillian to the vet. Unfortunately, I'm considering returning her to the shelter. She is incredibly protective of me & bit one of my other dogs who was begging to be let up on the furniture. It happened so fast, I was a bit shocked. No warning growl, just bit. She is so much bigger than my yorkies, that I fear I can never leave her home alone with them. She has taken to not allowing them on the bed at night either. If they are on it first, she ignores them, but if they get up in the middle of the night, she won't allow them back on. I am so confused & heartsick. She didn't break any skin, but it wasn't a warning nip, it was a snarling, lucky you moved & mommy intervened attempt to bite. My yorkies come first, so I'm worried that trying to do the right thing by homing this girl, might mean harming my other dogs. I sorely wish I could see the future right now. She hasn't been allowed in my lap or chair since. This happened a couple hours ago. What would you do? |
I'd be saying she needs to be in a one dog only family based on this behavior. The biting aggression part concerns me as well. My guess she may not like cats either as a sibling. My rescue came from a place where there were always many other dogs around and she still doesn't like sharing me. pretty much she's just vocal about it but the first time she met the pom she barked behind her to make her move away from me. She didn't bite her though she could have she just yapped at the air. This week paul is out of town starting wednesday so we will see how she does when my daughter stays over with the pom until sunday. she did fine last week when I babysat and it only took the one correction for her to behave. I know for me with Savannah she will be the only furchild because that is what I feel she needs. I know its heartbreaking when you figure out a furbaby won't fit into your family and that is why when rescue's do their personality tests you will see the little icons for no kids or no other dogs or no cats etc. I also took mine on pretty much the same way and if I had her as a foster I'd say she loves kids...doesn't like to share with other dogs and should be an only dog...I'm not sure how she is with cats since she hasn't met my daughters yet and the only one she did see was the feral cat recovering in my hall in a cage after a spay. my thoughts and prayers go out to you since this is very hard on the heart. The dominating decision though is what is best for your other furbabies it could cause them to go from being well adjusted and secure to being scared of coming near you for fear of being attacked. After doing some research I found that our local SPCA is a Kill shelter, so spent the morning with the dogs taking turns jumping up into my lap, with each one taking turns being "King of the Mountain" while the other ones jump up. I figured if Cesar Milan wouldn't give up at this point I wasn't going to either. I also saw some actual signs of bonding between the dogs today, and decided that we were going to visit the vet instead of the shelter. Well we did end up visiting the shelter as well, but only to get the medical records they neglected to add to my dog kit. I saw someone turning in two dogs and almost burst into tears. She will be crated as long as it takes, forever if necessary when I'm not home. I only work 4-6 hour shifts 4-5 days a week, so I think we can live with that. Anyway, bottom line is I think she deserves her chance here, & of course the yorkies like her, so it's all a stepping stone....wish us luck! |
I wish you all the luck in the world. I hope things work out, but I understand that isn't always the case.:) |
2 Attachment(s) Good for you! Thanks for giving her a chance. Socializing dogs takes alot of patence and time. I'm so relieved you're not going to give up on her. So many people do that. This dog was probably raised as an only dog and it's going to take time for her to learn to share you. My dogs are all very jealous of each other and there will be growls and nips. Just give it time and I'm sure they will become friends when she realizes that she is going to get equal attention. We started out with 2 basset hounds (sisters) then when we got Zoe our shorkie they were jealous of Zoe. Then we got Zach and they were all jealous of Zach. There were dog arguments and fights for awhile. Then when we got Oliver now they're all jealous of Oliver. |
First day progress! Well, actually third day, but 1st day of "lap-sharing" training. Had my son take this pic for me, mind you, Jillian was on my lap first & did nothing but act sad when Buttons jumped up second. I have a headache from all the errands, & puppy training today, but I'm so proud of her! The pic is in my albums under shelter puppy I think...Now off to lay down with my furkids & get rid of this headache....lol Sorry it's in the albums, but didn't feel like making it smaller on this puter, have to dl program etc. I usually just post on my FB page first, & it downsizes em for me. |
