Hello YorkieTalk!!! HOWDY! I'm a new yorkie momma and am definitely new to the site so I just thought I would take the time to introduce myself! My name is Karina and I'm the proud mother of a 4 month old siamese kitten named Jiggy and as of Tuesday a 5 year old 6 pound yorkie named Effy. I stumbled up on this site when researching for my newest edition, Effy, on Sunday. I fell in love with the community of dog lovers here. I saw her picture online and immediately fell for her, I contacted the her previous family and found out her age and that made me a little nervous about adopting her. I have never adopted an older dog before and have only adopted puppies. I was nervous so I did a little research and the information I found on this site really helped me make the decision to adopt her. She has been a pleasure to have a round and is already sleeping in my bed with me and Jiggy. Jiggy, whom I've had since he was only 8 weeks old, was very nervous around Effy at first because he had never seen a dog before. They are getting a long better now. They haven't become comfortable enough to play yet but they are tolerable of each other now and I feel are coming to enjoy each others company. I would love some advice on how to make her feel more comfortable in her home. I'm trying to give her some space as suggested on a thread here and have given her her own corner with her food and water bowls, bed, blanket, toys but she just seems to want to sleep all the time. She is a bit over weight and very chubby so I've been trying to walk her. The family that had her before must not have ever had her on a leash because she simply hates it! I am having the hardest time walking her with the leash because she puts on the breaks and will not budge even after bribing he with treats. She needs to get used to being on it because I would love to go for walks with her and she definitely needs to exercise. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I'd love to get to know all of you so please feel free to comment and message me ! Sincerely, Karina (EffysMomma) http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/images/icons/love.gif |
Welcome Karina, Effy and Jiggy!! I'm so happy to hear that you rescued a doggie!! I guess she wasn't walked on a leash and she doesn't know what's expected. All I can suggest is to have alot of patience and hopefully she will get the hang of it. My friend has a dog that won't walk on the leash either so she lets her dog run around in her fenced in back yard. Congratulations and I wish you and your furry family all the best. |
Welcome to YT, Karina. And congrats on the new addition. I agree with advice you've been given. Beyond that, it's nice to establish a routine so you can cut down on the surprises in her life for a while. If you're doing walks, try to do them at the same time(s) each day. If you're not free feeding, then feed at the same time(s) every day. I think you're gonna do just fine! Can't wait to see some pics |
Hi Karina (I have a friend in College Station!) Welcome to YT. Please use a harness when walking your little one. Attach the leash to the harness. |
Hi Karina, Jiggy, and Effy welcome to YT. I have a hard time walking my yorkie on a leash also. He hates it. Apparently she was never walked on a leash so it's going to take time. I also have a Siamese cat named Twinkle. She's about 6 years old. |
Howdy! Thank you all for the great advice! I'm trying very hard to keep her on a schedule and so far so good. I had planned on free feeding her and keeping the bowl out all the time but since she is over weight I didn't see that as a very good idea. She has the cutest little pink harness that we have been using and I she seems to not mind having it on. We're going to try to go for another walk again today and tomorrow and we'll see how it goes. I'm hoping she does better. Unfortunately I don't have a fenced yard so I can't let her roam around free and I'm so scared to let her out of the house with out supervision. She and the kitten are doing well together and so far she is adjusting well. :D |
Welcome to YT. That's a nice little family you have there. |

Thank you! I'm going to try to post some pics soon :D |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk! It's so easy to see how much you love your pets. It sounds like you also have a lot of patience too. That's great. I wish you lots of luck walking Effy. My pup didn't like to walk either. Maybe after Effy is used to you and her surroundings, you could take her to a beginners class. They usually teach walking on a leash. It really made a difference for my pup. Good luck to you and your babies. :) |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. You will love it here and get a lot of great advice. I have a siamese cat and he loves to play with my 4 yorkies. It seems like you are doing a great job with Effy, she is very lucky to have a mom like you that wants to give her a great home. |

Hi welcome to YT!!! :D |
She may be grieving for her family, so patience is going to be the key. I would suggest that you take her to the vet to have a thorough checkup, if you have not already done so. Did you receive her vet records from the previous family? |
Hi Katrina!! I'm so happy you adopted a 5 year old yorkie! That's not too old at all!! I just adopted a 10 yr. old little girl and it's been alot of fun!! Don't give up with the leash...just tug a little, if you can get her to move then let up on the leash...try to keep the forward momentum going....eventually she'll LOVE walking with the harness...its like anything else...its new to her...so it will take some time for her to get used to it! Please feed her premium dog food....Thats really important for her overall health... Sounds good that you aren't free feeding...don't need her to gain more weight...:D If your not sure about what kind to feed...you can go to this site and find out how the food rates.. Dog Food Reviews | Dog Food Ratings I can't wait to see pics of your whole 'fur' family!! Good luck..and WELCOME to yt! :) |
