Getting Princess Spayed Princess is just over a year old and will be getting spayed & microchipped march 7. I just wondered, is this relatively safe to have done on a 7# dog? How will I keep her "chilled out" after the surgery so she doesn't open herself up? I think it would be further upsetting to keep her in her crate....i don't know! will she have to wear a cone or anything? does anyone know the turn around before she's back to her spunky self? will the spay affect her spunky nature? thanks so much!:) |
Yes, it is relatively safe as long as a good anesthetic protocol is used. It's less safe to leave her unspayed and risk pyometra which would be treated by an emergency spay while she is very sick. They are usually back to themselves within a week. Personality change is possible, but not probable. Watch the amount she is being fed. |
Callie was around 9 months when I had her spayed and the first night all she did was sleep and for about a week she stayed mostly low key without me needing to crate her or anything. I did have to try and keep her from jumping tho because she wanted to sleep on the couch so I bought her a nice new comfy bed for the living room. If she licks her stitches she will need to wear the cone or some people I have heard on here use a baby onesie. I went ahead and bought the cone when Callie got spayed but she was uninterested in licking her stitches so I didnt have to use it. I have heard of a lot of dogs smaller then 7 pounds getting spayed and making it ok. I would make sure to get the blood work done before the spay that most vets recommend. It didnt seem to change Callies personality. Hope everything works out great. |
Mabel was under 3lb when she was spayed at six months old and did just fine. We made sure to do the blood test prior to the spaying to make sure everything was checked out. We also had her microchipped and tattooed at the same time. We kept her in a onesie for about a week and she was pretty good not trying to get at it. She's nine months old now and extremely healthy and we're so glad she and Darwin are both fixed. Good luck with your little pup and let us know how she makes out!:) |
Your Princess will do just fine with her spay. Maggie May was in a little bit of pain the first night and we were able to give her some pain meds-she quieted right down and went to sleep. The next day she didn't cry/wimper like the first night but she was definitely quiet and stayed in her crate. By the 3rd day she was just about back to normal and being her little terror self. :) Maggie was just under 4 lbs when she was spayed. It was a little bit of a challenge to keep her quiet but overall it wasn't too bad as we have 2 yorkies. I have a soft cone collar called the Kiss-E Collar if you might be considering a cone. Just click on the link in my signature and you can read up on them. Best of luck with Princess' procedure. Let us know how she does. :) |
good luck to princess!!! im also doing research on spaying because my new baby is coming home in march and lets say its been about 14 years since a dog went into surgery like this. please let us know how she does :) |
1 Attachment(s) Brielle was spayed in Jan at 10mos old weighing 3 1/2lbs. She did great and was back to herself in a few days. I did limit her jumping but other than that she did just fine. I have to say thanks to YT members for all the info that I needed to help me understand the procedure and ask all the right questions . I did print the Anesthesia Protocol and brought it with me to her pre-op bloodwork appointment to ask all the questions. I felt very confident with our vet knowing I asked all the right questions and she was right on with how the procedure would be completed. I also ordered the Kiss E collar from Hot Rods Mom, it was much more comfortable for her her than the hard cones and is is adorable ( princess themed). Good luck Princess:) |

Good luck with the surgery!!!!! Keep us posted, I am sure she will do great! |
Best of luck to you and keep us posted!! She will do just fine! I had Oliver neutered this past weekend and as soon as I picked him up and took him home you wouldn't have even known he had surgery :) They bounce back quick, but I TOTALLY understand how worried you must feel! That was the longest day ever! :) |
I've had four dogs both spayed and neutered and believe me I felt the same way you did but everything will be fine. Be sure to have her screened before surgery to make sure everything is okay and in a day or so she will be back to her old spunky self. |
Great! Today I noticed Princess is starting her second heat....does this mean they can do the spay a week from Monday? The first time she had her cycle it lasted for 3 weeks so I'm sure it'll be happening in 10 days. I'm going to call the Humane Society tomorrow since they're doing it. :(:thumbdown |
