Curious.. Hello everyone! My name is Tiffany and I joined yorkietalk tonight. My boyfriend and I just received our baby Luna this past Sunday. This is our first yorkie and we are already madly in love with her! :D I took her to the vet today for her check up. The vet told me that everything is good, but she does have luxating patella. I was wondering if this normally causes complications further down the road? What should I look out for? Also, before I purchased Luna from my breeder I told her that I was looking for a girl on the smaller side, around 4-5 lb. range. The breeder told me that she would be that size. However, Luna is exactly 2 lbs. right now at 8 weeks. The vet guessed 8 lbs. full grown, but told me not to quote her on that. Unfortunately, I did not get to see Luna's parents since it would have been about a 7 hour round trip for me. But she did tell me that her females she breeds are between 4 and 6 lbs. and her males range from 2 1/2 to 4 lbs. Does anyone have an idea of how big she will get? Of course, it doesn't really matter because I love her to death! But I am just curious. Thank you! :) |
She is very young at only 8 weeks old to have left her mother. Yorkie puppies should stay with their mom litter mates until they are at least 12 weeks old. IMO it is concerning that at 8 weeks old that your vet has diagnosed her with LP. Did he say what GRADE LP she has? I am guessing that the 8 lbs is probably a pretty accurate weight for her little one. Welcome to YT and please post some pictures. Would love to see what your new paper looks like~I love puppies. :) |
Welcome to YT! Can't offer advice but I would love to see some pictures of Luna - it's amazing how fast we can fall in love with these Yorkies!:) |
I would also be curious on the grade of LP diagnosed. It concerns me that it was diagnosed so young and the grade would help confirm if it was genetic or not. Also, 8 weeks is too young for leaving mama and the litter. That combined with the LP makes me wary of the breeder, big time. I'm not sure of the lemon laws in your state, but maybe you could get some reimbursement for the LP? I'm not really sure how they work though, so don't quote me on that. I would also try talking to the breeder about this issue if it does turn out to be genetic. What kind of health guarantees were in your contract? If it were me, I would not personally be buying from the same breeder again in the future. Be sure to do thorough research and buy your breeder first next time. However, congrats on your pup! I know you must be so excited!!!!! There are many threads on LP here on YT. I am sure you can find some helpful advice there and some other more experienced members may chime in here! The advice I have is don't let your little one jump all around. NO jumping off the couch, bed, etc. It is really hard on their joints and especially bad for LP pups as far as I know. I am glad she is healthy other than the LP! I am glad that you love your little baby and I am sure she is adorable! We would like to see pictures as soon as possible please! :D Love cute baby pictures here. |
That is so sad to have LP at 8 wks. You should follow the advice of Furbaby Friend. Congratulations on your little one! Not going to harp on the "being too young to be taken from her momma"...but she was. |
Welcome to YT! Check out this chart, it looks like she might be around 6 lbs. Of course it's not 100% guarantee! Need to take some pictures so we can all ooh and aah. Yorkshire Terrier - Yorkie Puppy Growth/Weight Chart - watch us grow |
I know everyone says you should not take a Yorkie away from its mother till 12 or more weeks. But why? Maybe if they are too small? Or unhealthy? I work at a veterinary clinic and we have quite a few Yorkie breeders in our area and lots and lots of yorkie puppies coming thru for everything from tail docking to first dewormings and first shots, and all of them give away their puppies around 8-9 weeks. And we have NEVER seen a problem in the last 13 years that i have been there. UNLESS, it has a heart or liver defect, which has only happened once and it was from a pet store hours away.:( Anyway, as long as a puppy is healthy there is no reason it shouldnt be able to leave at 8 -9 weeks. I was just curious why everyone on here says that. Thanks |
I know that all the breeders around here have very very healthy parents, and all the parents are between 4-6 lbs. So is it just lucky that they have such healthy babies? And we havent seen any problems? |
Sorry it took me 3 posts , but i also wanted to say that we have seen a couple puppies come in from other areas around 9 weeks that had luxating patellas and one had to have surgery and the other never really had any problems with it. So your puppy may be okay. But your Doctor will prob keep a close eye on it each time you go in, to make sure its okay. Not all luxating patellas have to have surgery. In my experience at a Veterinary Clinic i would say 90% of small dogs with luxating patella do not require surgery at our hospital anyway. Hope this helps. |
Welcome to YT and congrats on your little Luna. I'm soo sorry to hear she has LP, while I have no advice to give, I know you'll find a lot of information on this site. Everyone is so nice and so helpful! I hope your little one is doing ok! :) |

Not only do the momma's teach the puppies proper "doggie behavior" (ever seen a dog try to play with other dogs when they weren't ever around any - they don't know dog body language or when to back down). and bite inhibition but they also teach them how to get along with each other and momma's give the puppies more "confidence" when dealing with the unknown. Puppies who are older when they go to their new homes just do better - eating, less illness, more confidence etc. I used to let my Yorkie puppies go at 8 weeks old (I had large dogs before Yorkies who were weaned at 4-5 weeks and ready at 6-8 weeks) but all of us stressed --- The moms who had to wean the puppies before they were ready paced and whined, the puppies who were pulled from their moms before they were eating well on their own were unsure and didn't eat well, and me who had to watch them like a hawk to make sure they were eating well and didn't get hypoglycemia. It was too stressful. As I learned better I changed things for the betterment of my dogs. I now just let momma wean when she is ready. It's usually around 9-10 weeks and puppies are eating well usually by 10 weeks. We still provide canned/dry food mixed several times a day even until 12 weeks old just to make sure they are eating well but I don't have to stress about the puppies (as much - I'm a worry-wort). Puppies learn every day from each other, from momma. and from other gentle females when they are 10-12 weeks old. I feel like they are more mature and physically & mentally ready for their new homes at 12 weeks old plus the new home doesn't have to worry as much about making sure they eat. Teresa |

My yorkie also was diagnosed with LP when he was pretty small. My vet said someday if it ever bothered him, he may have to have surgery. But, it hasnt! Although I do have doggie insurance on him!! You never know whats going to happen with them!! |
Thank you all so much for your replies! I did lots of research before I picked this breeder, and I thought she was reputable, but now I realize that I was wrong. I did know that normally yorkies should not be taken to new homes until 10-12 weeks of age. In her emails, she implied that she kept her puppies until then. However, when Luna was 8 weeks, she called me and told me that she was ready. I discussed Luna's age with her and she assured me that Luna was eating very well and was ready. So, I trusted her judgment. Now I realize that it's not just about the puppy's health or eating habits, but about the socialization process. I thought I could trust my breeder. Lesson learned! I also realized when I got home that she did not provide me with Luna's AKC certificate. Not good! So I will be calling her today to talk to her about it. I just hope that she can provide me with one, and didn't lie to me about her dogs and puppies being AKC registered. I feel bad that I trusted this woman. I feel like I should have known better :( But, if I hadn\'t chose this breeder, I wouldn\'t have gotten my little Luna. She is wonderful and AJ and I love her no matter what! I\'m concerned about her LP. I talked to a nurse at my vet today and she told me that it could really go either way. It could get worse, or it could get better. Yorkiedaze, I am glad to hear that! I hope that is the case with Luna. Anyway, thank you all so much for your replies. I very much appreciate it! I will post pictures of her as soon as I figure out how to! |
