so sad :-( DH and I went to petco to pick the girls up a few things this afternoon. While shopping for them each a new dress I noticed one of their trainers "PULLING" around a very tiny maltese with a leash and a COLLAR. The poor baby was sitting on the floor as she was being pulled around by this trainer, while she explained to the pups owner why you had to pull the dog around like this, until they understand how to walk on a leash. I couldn't keep my mouth shut. I asked the trainer why she had a collar on that poor puppy while she had her on a leash and why she was pulling her around like that. She instantly became huffy and told me this is how you train a dog to walk on a leash, blah, blah, blah..... I told her, NO, that is the way to give the pup a collapsed trachea and that she should use a harness. She did not agree with me, but I didn't expect that she would, but at least I was able to give the owner something to think about. The little puppy was probably about 8 weeks old. Sorry this is long, but this really irritated me. Poor little puppy. |
That is total cruelty. |
Oh my, that is so sad. How awful, I would hope they would hire better trainers than that....what are they thinking! errr, ticks me off too. I hope your words sinks into that owners thick head! |
You go girl, I wouldn't have been able to keep my mouth shut either! Hubby says I have a bit of potty mouth when it comes to things like this. I hope the owner was listening really good. |
thats horrible.....you should of gone to management....if i was the owner of that poor dog i would of fliped a S*** at that trainer after hearing what you said! |
I still can't get this little pup out of my mind. |
Wow, That is terrible :( |
That poor little furbaby.:( I hope the owner listened to you, went home and googled CT. I am so glad you spoke up. |

I couldn't take going in and seeing dead and sick animals in the cages all the time...find a local pet or farm store that has been owned by someone for a couple years I'll bet serious money they know a lot more as their business survival depends on personal service, awareness and customer satisfaction... one of the best advisers I've ever ran to in times of need is a local pet store owner (she also owns a pet boutique and is part owner in a dog day care grooming service parlor now) she has no formal training but after 30 years in the business I'd test her knowledge against any vet, trainer, behaviorist, groomer, etc. and she's free her business depends on her ability to keep up with the best and educate. I'd remember this and not spend my hard earned dollar supporting a company who employs people like this...regularly, everywhere... |

Poor puppy!! I'm glad you spoke up and told the owner about CT and about a harness. Hopefully the owner will listen to your advise. |
Yes, I too hope the pups owner was listening. Also, I am aware that petco has some young employees, and thankfully so..they need jobs and experience......however this was not a younger person, just not a knowledgeable one. I have met people at both petco and petsmart with knowledge. Where you are employed does not dictate how one uses their brain. |

I have used Petsmart for training on two occasions- the same Petsmart both times- one trainer was AWFUL- I didn't even finish the class, the other was amazing, very experienced, knew the yorkie breed well, we trained on a harness. I have always been treated very well by all the employees in both stores, they are always very helpful. A few weeks ago, I needed Chloe's nails trimmed really quick and didn't have time to go to my regular groomer- I stopped into Petco and the groomer who was a very young girl called my vet for me to verify rabies information and she was so sweet and gentle with Chloe while doing her nails. Employees have offered to walk stuff to my car, help me carry items, help me pick out items, help lead me to items I couldn't find. Was this groomer the OP writes about bad? YEP, but there are bad people everywhere in every job, at every age. I find it commendable when young people are working and think it is great if big box stores are the ones willing to give them a shot. I am nothing short of annoyed when people don't do their jobs- but if someone is working hard, I don't care WHERE they work. |

I'm pretty sure the employees need to have their Trainers certificate before they are allowed to train others and I know it's not easy to become a certified trainer. I saw a strange trainer at Petco, during a puppy play class. It was free so I went for a little bit. I was horrified. The trainer was allowing dogs to be agreesive and jump all over my two and the other smaller ones. When my two would snap(which they never did before) she said it was okay because they were holding their own. NO WAY...right!!!! I told my trainer at Petsmart and she was shocked. They've never snapped since....:) As for the harnesses, I personally feel that ALL dogs should have harnesses instead of collars. |
That just made me want to cry! :( How can people treat animals like that? Just how... I am so glad you went and told off on her! Were you able to talk to the manager? Did the puppy\'s owners say anything? |
