Anyways let me restate my thoughts...there is a Yorkie talker on here who works there and she's wonderful! In my opinion she's an exception. "Animal abuse at Petco (or Petsmart)...shocker...not really" Glad you did speak up...I too would have and probably would have been kicked out for being so loud...maybe a letter to corporate too... |
Good for you for saying something. I agree that you should call or write to corporate about this. Basically this trainer is teaching people to damage their dogs trachea. |

I just think people should also be aware of that, I'm sure small pet stores are often the same, but in smaller retailers they don't have the profit margins to justify the loss percentages in the least...sorry I came off so crudely, it just really has turned my stomach to be aware of these things on such a personal level. Next time you go in note the conditions of the chinchillas and hamsters, many are suffering neurological issues and behavioral problems. Specifically chinchillas are nocturnal and don't like a lot of light, they need ample room to move and jump the cages or display cases in these stores are cruel confinement for them...it's similar to knowing USDA regulations say a dog only need 6" more room than its nose to the cage wall to be considered ample...we all know that's ugh how do I say it...a bunch of nonsense. I don't know much about reptiles but seeing them dead enough times speaks volumes to me. |

It was very unsettling to say the very least. It got a little loud, but at that point I really didn't care. |
When I see post like this I usually keep my opinions to myself but I have to say that my experience with Petco is completely opposite to what the OP experienced. Our local Petco is AWESOME, the trainers are exactly that trainers who know animals and are very qualified to teach classes. The Groomer at our local Petco Paula, is the groomer to take Yorkies or other small breed dogs in our area. Paula does an awesome job, cares for the animals and has a staff of younger groomers she is mentoring. With that said I do not blame the OP for being upset with that trainer and I commend her for saying something. I think I would also contact Petco Corp. via email from their website. Regarding seeing sick or dead animals in cages, I have never experienced this at Petco and if I did I would take the same approach and also contact local health departments (there has to be some laws against that type of treatment). To the OP I am sorry you had to experience that poor baby being dragged by its collar, that would really upset me also. |
thank you for not just walking by, you did what you could with the situation. wouldn't be surprised if the owner went & purchased a harness right after class, can only hope, & then after more thought hopefully found someone else to train the pup. you did good!!!:) |

That's terrible!!! I'm glad you said something! I sure would have! |
Thats terrible, I hope the owners listened to you and use a harness in future. I hate some people who think they know it all and are never open to critisism, thats how that 'trainer' seems to me. Probably isnt even qualified. :) |

Anywho...we don't have a Petco here, but I have taken Silver to puppy class at Petsmart and our trainer never argued with us about using a harness so maybe that trainer just didn't want to admit she was wrong or she just didn't care. Either way shame on her. After being on this forum everyone I know that has dogs I have informed them to not use a collar but to use a harness no matter what type of dog it is. |
I would like to know why an 8 week old puppy would be allowed to be part of a puppy class? At that age they should not be out in public for any reason. They are not fully vaccinated and to take a puppy into that environment is dangerous. On my personal experience Petsmart or Petco would not be where I would take my dogs for training. It is very hard to find a good trainer either through a pet store like these or privately. Good trainers are very hard to find and just because someone has a trainer certificate does not make them a knowledgeable/good trainer. |
In my area the stores run to both extremes the petsmart by my house is awesome. the staff is knowledgeable they all have pets. when I got custody of my brother and sister i also got a guinea pig i had no clue how to care for them so I went to petsmart and asked they wear very helpful answered all my questions and helped me find treats and vitamin c drops for it. the woman in charge of small animal and fish even gave me her personal number for if i had a problem. the take dead fish out right away and put them in tiny tanks in the back (dead fish do happen) I have never seen a dead or sick anything else in that store. I have not had training there but I have spoken with the trainers and one of them did Gatsby cgc test and was amazing about it she spent hours on the phone trying to see if he could walk on a harness because I refused to attach a leach to his collar. now the other pet smart is dirty stinky the staff don't care and i have been in there and seen dogs poop on the floor and everyone pretend they did not see it. we have a store called pet supplies plus which is the same way one of them is excellent they have amazing staff they take the animals out and play with them the bunnies(and whatever else needs it) gets a fan when its hot they keep all the animals groomed and clean they will help you find what is best for you. the other one is a horror they killed 4 bunnies because they over heated they allowed a iguana to get so big,and left it in a teeny tiny cage. that its leg become deformed and it had to have surgery to remove the dead skin it had been trying to shed. they allowed a gecko to overheat and starve to death because the only way the knew to get it out would have squished it and made a mess that they did not want to clean up the store is dirty and the animals are always unhealthy they never help you and will sometimes give you bad information to be funny. not all big chain pet stores are horrible go and see a few in your area, you might get lucky and have a nice one you can visit on a regular basis |
I'm personally so glad to see that others have or are having an opposite experience that I did at this store, and yes it is always a store by store basis...but I can't support in any way a chain that financially endorses Chinchilla farms which are the same as pup mills... Again I'm relieved to hear so many others are aware of these things and seeing good practices...I'd hope that when something isn't up to par everyone would take to get loud, to contact not only the manager but then corporate to make issue...when enough people push you see changes in business practices. I'd go to an ethical big box over a local pet store that was sub-par in the care of their animals any day too. I guess I forget how lucky I am to have 4 local pet stores here that are so wonderful! Where ever we spend our money we are by default supporting the practices of those places, encouraging them, weather we openly do it vocalize otherwise...the power of the mighty dollar. |
