Oliver will be neutered this Friday! Hey everyone! Oliver finally has his appointment to be neutered this Friday and I'm sooo nervous!! I've already taken half a week off next week so that I can be with him 24/7, but I wanted to ask those who have had their pups neutered how I should prepare? I'm dropping him off at his Vet's at 7:00 AM and, despite my pleading with them that I'd like to pick him up that evening, they want him to stay over night and they'll let me know when to come get him the following day :( Is that typical? I asked if anyone would be there overnight and they said no but that they will be monitoring him and that this is routine and they do it all the time. I love Oliver's Vet and trust her 100% so I'm sure he'll be fine... My other question is, Oliver is used to sleeping in bed with me however with having stitches I'm terrified of him jumping off the bed during the night (which isn't high at all) and hurting himself. Do they typically put little cones on the pups so they can't bite at their stiches? I ask this because I'd like to crate him at night just so I know he's safe, but I don't know if its ok to crate them while they have those things on? Also, are the stitches the desolvable kind that will go away eventually or will I have to take him back to get them removed? I'll be asking the Vet all these questions, I just like to be educated prior to taking him in. He'll also be having any remaining baby teeth pulled as well, does this cause him much pain afterwards?? I'm completely new at this and want to be fully prepared for anything and everything! Sorry for being such a worry wort, I just hate the thought of my little 3 1/2 pound dog going under anesthesia! I'll feel much better when he's home and under my care :) Thanks so much for your help!! |
I don't have any advice. My Remy will be getting neutered soon also. I just wanted to wish little Oliver good luck! Will be sending prayers that everything goes great and he will be home soon with his mommy!:) |
Hi, both of my boys came home after being neutered. They were dropped off in the early AM and picked up around 4 PM. I would ask if there is staff there during the night because if there is not, then I would take him home. He will be tired after for a day or so and both of mine had to wear the e-collar to prevent licking of the surgical site. They both did fine. I just kept them quiet. They did sleep with us as usual but we have stairs up to our bed. I would crate him if you think he might jump. If he needs to wear the e collar, he needs it even in the crate :) Stitches are dissolvable. Teddy had a bunch of baby teeth removed and he was on some pain meds they sent him home with but he was fine and ate and such. Dont worry about the anesthesia, it is very safe! Barney was 3 lbs. when neutered and only 12 weeks old because back I was not told to wait. Oliver will do great! |
If there is no staff member there I don't see a reason that you shouldn't be able to pick him up in the evening. For the e-collar I attached it to a cat collar with a bell so I could hear him moving around...but I'm a light sleeper which made it easy for me to know that Rizzo was on the move. Lucky for me though, he is a total wimp and won't jump off furniture, though he does jump on and off my couches which aren't too high up. But he won't jump off my bed...or at least he hasn't and doesn't seem to want to . Don't forget to ask about pain meds for the few days after the surgery. Most don't need them but they'll be good to have just in case. Good luck, don't worry yourself too much :) |
Thanks so much! I'm much more relieved :) That was a great idea as well in using a cat collar with a bell so I can hear him. Thanks again!! |
An ecollar can be used and they can be crated with it. He should not be allowed to sleep on a bed because jumping can cause damage. Could put your mattress on the floor if you really want to be with him... His mouth with be a bit sore. Not a huge deal though. After anesthesia and pain meds which both can cause reactions, and with a new incision, and possibly an IV line, it is not safe for him to be there overnight. It's done around here too, but I can't imagine it being forced. There is always the chance to take to an ER for overnight supervision. Well, all spays and neuters are sent home same day here anyway. If there are complications, the dog would go to the ER. It is just not a good idea to leave them alone. If there is a reaction to a med or something, he will be alone. |

You don't have to plead. It's your baby. I'm not forceful either, but when it comes to my dog I am and her vet understands that I'm only like b/c I care. There is absolutely no reason why he would need to stay until 2 the next day. My girl had a spay, liver biopsy, and dental all in the same day and came home about 4 hours after waking up. |
Good luck Oliver Good Luck Oliver and Kelly. When Buster had his LP surgery I got a great Kiss e Cone from Hot Rod's Mom. Not only did he look stylish but it was very comfortable. Buster stayed overnight as well to make sure he recovered from the anesthesia and to be monitored. It would be difficult to have to rush Oliver back if a complication arose. Not that one will but just in case.:) YorkieTalk.com Forums - Yorkshire Terrier Community |
I'll be thinking of you both on Friday!! He'll be fine - you will be a nervous wreck!:D When Sammy came home after surgery he was a little droopy. I had to block off the living room so he couldn't jump on the furniture. Then he was back to his old self again. I don't remember if he had stitches, he probably did because he had surgery for an obstruction and they neutered him at the same time. |
Ruby just had her spay last Tuesday and I was able to take her home around 5:30. She also had four baby teeth pulled and a cleaning. She always sleeps with us, but I was afraid of her getting hurt so she slept in her crate next to me. She was so exhausted that she didn't complain. She didn't get the dissolvable stitches, she'll have hers removed Friday. Good luck, sending positive thoughts!! |
You sound just like me:D I was scared to death to have my Jax neutered....they wanted him to stay all night also. I trust my vet completely too but did not see the point in having him stay if there wouldn't be anyone there with him. They did let me bring him home that night. He was a bit woozy but he still slept with us in bed. He didn't eat anything at all that first night. He was good as new in the morning....he never even acted like he was in any pain at all. He also had 4 baby teeth removed as well. His sutures dissolved on their own. I probably overreacted but I was so worried the whole day and he did great. I know little Oliver will too:aimeeyork |
My little Oliver did end up sleeping with me the night he got the surgery, mainly because he didn't react so well to the anesthesia, so I did not want to move the poor guy from the bed to his crate. He ended up wetting the bed though, which he never has done! I cried when I picked him up, because I had never seen him so drugged up and sluggish. He didn't even wake up when the vet handed him to me! So, be prepared! He did end up waking a little bit later that night, and the next day, he was fine. We did buy the Bitter Apple stuff to spray on him, but he barely tried to lick himself. |

Sorrry I just reread your post and was wondering how are they monitoring him if no one is there. My mistake if no one is going to be there I would request to bring him home. I am curious as to how they monitor without being there. With Buster they had vet tech's there 24 hours. All my best to Oliver and his mom for a quick recovery. |
I just went through this Monday with Buddy. We got him there at 8am. Yes were were nervous wrecks. At 10am they called and said surgery was a success. Told us that we could pick him up between 4:30 and 6pm. Make sure you pick your Yorkie up that day or, find a new vet!!! As for the post surgury, when we picked him up he was very groggy. Unlike his normal self which was hopping around in the car from front to back and every which way in between, he was doped up. Natalie drove and I had Buddy in my lap. He was pretty much out of it. Later that night he was alert, but not moving much. I mentioned in my other post, I went to pick him up and he cried. It was a soft little cry so I put him down. We made a place for him in between us, but soon I put him in my lap. He slept and I just pet him for hours while we watched a few programs on tv. At bed time we got him on the bed and he moved a few times until he found his spot and slept fine. The next day he was still moving slowly, but by mid day he was moving around and eating. By night, he was good ole Buddy again. Today we went on 2 walks and he's just about back to normal. I know each dog will deal with this differently so just be there for him and he should be fine. My thoughts are with you! |
I agree with the others... TELL them you will be picking him up that evening. I would not stand for my baby to be all alone in a hospital after such a big surgery. Both of mine came home the same evening and did great. Good luck! |
He comes home I agree with the others to bring him home since there isn't anyone there in the evening. What's the point? There is no pleading - he's your dog. If the vet doesn't like it find another vet. I live in Northern VA and use the Belle Haven Animal Medical Centre in Alexandria for my little boy. Had his neutering and teeth done there. |
When our Nicco was neutered it was outpatient surgery and he did not stay overnight. In first thing in the morning and out late that afternoon. I was sooo nervous as well and was on pins and needles because they are so little and you worry about the anesthesia. We also assumed he would come home with some sort of cone or whatever so that he couldn't get to the surgical area to lick, but no, the vet said it wasn't necessary. We had planned for his recovery to take several days. Crazy as it sounds, but the time the anesthesia wore off it was like nothing happened. We tried to keep him quiet and not jump, but he just acted like his normal self. He played and jumped and ran and ate, etc. and really needed no recovery time at all. Hope your little guy does as well! |
Yes I spoke with my Vet this morning in regards to his neuter tomorrow and told them that since no one would be monitoring him overnight that I felt it best he come home with me. They agreed and asked me to bring him back in the morning just for a follow up to make sure everything is ok and I of course agreed :) Thank you so much for your kind words and letting me know what to expect! Sounds like he'll be just fine and back to his old self by the time the weekend ends :) I'll sure be a nervous wreck tomorrow though! Keep us in your prayers!! :) |

Excellent news on bringing him home. Here's an update on Buddy. Today is 48 hours since surgery. This morning when we woke, he went outside, came in and was his old spry self. Later when I was dressing for work and sitting on the bed to put on my socks, he jumped up there to sit with me(it's a pillow top so pretty tall bed). I'd say he's back to himself. The key is to be very attentive when you pick him up Friday afternoon. If you can get someone to drive you in their car to get him, he'll be very appreciative to lay in your lap on the way home. He'll be sore that night but should feel much better Saturday. Good luck! |

Yeah I plan on having my BF drive me to go pick up Oliver, I'm sure he'll do great! I'm als soo relieved to hear that he should be back to his old self again within 48 hours but I will definitely stay super attentive to him. I'll let you know how he does! :) |
Mosh is also getting neutered, on Monday! I'm so nervous and I'm also feeling a little guilty :( Aside from the groomers, I have never dropped him off anywhere! I just feel bad for him. But on the plus side, I was told that I can pick him up the same night, so I'm planning on just giving him extra hugs when he gets home :p |
My Bentley was neutered last Friday. Dropped him off at 8 am and picked him up at 5:30 pm. He didn't have any teeth pulled. They sent him home with a collar that was too big. I put it on him that night to sleep and he took it right off, so I didn't use it. It was the weekend so I just carefully watched him so he wouldn't lick the incision. I let him sleep with me over the weekend. Early Monday morning about 3 am I put him in his crate because he was moving around. Between 3 and 6 he licked his incision site and came open a bit. Took him to the vet that morning and they gave him antibiotics because it was infected. The vet said the sutures are inside and they just close the outer skin with some kind of super glue type stuff. I got a smaller cone and thought it was all good and he would be healed by Friday. Yesterday while at work, he found a way to lick the incision site with the cone on! This has been a nightmare trying to get it to heal! I put the bigger cone back on and he hasn't tried to take it off. I felt sorry for him trying to sleep in it so I cut 2 holes in a sock for his legs and put that on him like underwear last night. He took that off in the night so I made a better one today. I'll just be glad when the stupid thing heals....it was the tiniest little incision! |
