Yorkie not sleeping at night HELP a TIRED MOM! I have a 11 month-old Yorkie who is not sleeping. I typically go to bed around 10:30 or 11 and put him in his crate in my bedroom. He uses the bathroom at least 5 times before we go to bed. But by 2am whines and cries so I take him outside to pee. Then he does it again around 4, 5ish. My alarm is set for 6:25 but he's already up at 5:30 so I lay on the sofa to sleep while he eats and plays with his toys. He always pees and goes back to his crate without a fuss. I wish I could just let him whine/fuss/cry but I live in an apartment building and don't want to keep my neighbors awake. He also keeps me up. He also will pee in his crate (yeah, he doesn't care if he wets it and I don't want to clean it up at 3am). I take him on a long walk twice in the evening to try to tire him out. I try to take him to doggie day care at least once a week and that doesn't even tire him out to sleep through the night. I am exhausted. I haven't slept a solid 7 hours in over a month. I don't know what to do at this point. I was hoping he would outgrow this by now since he is already almost a year but it's actually getting worse. Please help. |
Is the crate next to the bed? Can he see you? Maybe put it close enough that you can put your fingers thru when he starts. When Tia came home, I put her kennel on top of Ally's so she could see me. If she started to move I stuck my fingers thru and she sniffed/licked and settled down. Tia is now 1 yr and Ally is 2 yrs. If they start to cry...and I know they don't need out...I just give that baby a 'firm' NO...and she stops. You might limit his food/water before bedtime too. Your baby has already created his pattern though, so it's going to be tough. Good luck. |
Is his crate too big? That's usually the reason for peeing inside the crate. Also, take away his water a couple of hours before bed time. That should help. At 11 months Mocha either slept through the night or getting up only once. |
Gizmo has been doing the same thing for the past MONTH!!! I finally gave up and let him sleep with me in bed. Since then he sleeps through the night and is much happier. Plus im happier since i can sleep. Gizmo would cry and I too live in an apartment complex. He is almost 9 months old so hes close in age to your furbaby. If you dont want him to sleep in bed with you another thing that may work is putting his crate in the living room or bathroom where you can still hear him yet he cant see you. Gizmo gets upset when hes in the crate and can see me. Just an idea whatever you decide to do will be the right choice for your baby!! Good luck :) |
Have you considered wee wee pads? Maybe your baby just can't hold it all night. When mine were younger I set them up in an expen at night- blankets, toys, food and water on one side and wee wee pads on the other. This way they had access to everything they needed at night and never woke me up- when I got up in the morning to check on them I would find them playing with their toys. |
I used to have that problem with my dogs. I got a doggie play pen where I could put in a washable wee wee pad and that solved the problem. It looks sort of like a portable baby crib. Now we just adopted Oliver before Christmas and he uses the play pen. After a couple of nights he started sleeping through the night. The other two sleep in my bed or in my room mates room. They just didn't like the crate. |
I hate to admit... but my guys sleep in the bed with me and dh... nothing like puppy heat on a cold winter night:p They sleep through the night... once and awhile she will whine and I take her to the potty pad.. good luck |
My Yorkie is 6 months today, and he has started being a pain in the morning. From the day we got him at 12 weeks old, he has never cried or made a sound in the crate. He would go in every night and sleep without a sound and never made a sound until I let him out in the morning. The past few mornings he has been making some whining noises just before it's time for me to get up. I have let him sleep with me a few times, but I find I sleep better without him in my bed because I am always waking up to look for him and he is small. I don't think he is doing it because he has to pee, because when I let him out he just wants to run around and play with the other dog and I have to remind him he needs to go outside first! |
Taycie used to pee in her crate as well. Durning the day I took her blankets out of her crate. ( I read this somewhere I was having a heck of a time potty training in the begining) Well... of course she had an accident. Unfortunetly it was in the car and I really couldn't do much until I got home. Needless to say she was soooo upset cried all the way home and no she did NOT like standing in her potty. Yes, I did feel bad for her, so I cleaned up the mess and gave her a bath. That nipped that problem in the bud. Never again have I had a problem with her using her crate as the bathroom. I was able to put the blankets back and she has never done it since. Xpens or doggie play pens are wonderful! Taycie has one that she uses when I work on Saturdays. It might help him relieve some of his energy. You could also had a potty pad on the opposite end as well! I hope you can get some rest soon! |
Oh I forgot to mention when I have been at a local pet store they have alot of treats, supplements. One is called Calming or Relax? Maybe look into a natural supplement before bedtime to see if that helps. Also Boopster on here mentioned she was using Pheremones.. a plug in that helps them become less stressed. Hi, my Tezel used to whine and cry a lot at night as well when I first got him. Thanks to the fabulous advise from people in YT, now Tezel sleep thru the night without waking up and cry. I think like what others has mentioned, make sure you put him somewhere he can see at night. Talk to him and gently ask him to sleep. For me, when he is in his crate, I just put my hands in and he will just sniff and lick a bit. Then I ask him to sleep, before you know it, he will lie down and close his eyes. It works for me, you can try it out... :) |
