Dying puppy who"s fault is it?
 

Hello I need some advice from everyone. I just purchased my puppy girl a couple days ago. she got sick and was rushed to the vets office this morning, is my breeder liable to help pay some vet bills or replace my puppy?I got her on Tuesday and its Saturday and Im at the pet hospital since early morning and the vet thinks she might have some worms or other issues going on with her. She does have low blood sugar but the vet said he was more concerned with the other problems and to call my breeder. To no surprise she said the puppy was healthy when I gave her to you. Is that right? If she came with a defect isn't she liable to replace her for a healthy puppy since on her website she says the dog has a 1yr health guarantee?My puppy's name is Lilly by the way.Im sad but its only been a couple days that I have had her? What do I do?

California has some strict Puppy Lemon Laws. Please look up and review.
Did she come with all her health papers from the breeder. Did you take her in to your vet within 48-72 hrs to have him check her out?

First get your pup well, find out from the vet the exact diagnosis and have him put in writing, if he can certify that this pup was unfit to sell, then that would be good, and by the way your vet should be up on the Puppy Lemon Laws in your state.

I would ask for a refund and see if you can keep the puppy. The refund money can go toward Vet care. That's a toughie when you don't really know what's wrong with her. I just worry that if you return her; the breeder would put her down.

The vet should be able to write a letter or give some kind of written diagnosis.

How old is Lilly and how much does she weigh? What are her medical issues?

I truly hope that the Vet can give you a good diagnosis and help to make her better.

We've seen a spate of dying puppies here on YT lately and it is heartbreaking; I truly hope Lilly gets better.

So sorry your little one is sick...If the vet said she has other issues did you not question what they are...I would find out and contact your breeder again

did you get a contract with a written guarantee of health? we got sadie from a crummy breeder who claims a 1 year health guarantee on all their pups but when i brought it up to them they claimed that they could only do something if their vet (4 hours away) took a look at the dog rather than believing my vet's diagnosis. you are probably about to find out what kind of a breeder your breeder is. if she/he will stand by their pups and refund the money on a sick pup, or if he/she is a greeder and only wanted your money and sold you a sick pup and will then turn their back on you.

i hope she/he's the first type. good luck prayers for a quick recovery and better health. worms are treatable and puppies are born with them. easy fix. the low blood sugar is common in toy dogs, use nutrical from the vet or pet store for times when sugars are low or karo syrup works if you have nothing else. this is not a breeder thing, this is just common in pups and something you as an owner need to know about, research, and take care of yourself. worms are usually something the owner is responsible for as well. some breeders deworm and good ones deworm more than once, but you have to worm them too if it's needed.

It doesn't say whether or not the puppy was shipped to her. But I agree there sure does seem to be a lot of new puppies on YT that are sick, etc.
So my question is, why are they getting so sick and/or dying within a few days of coming home?
How did the breeder keep such a sick pup alive and able to be viewed, handled, chosen by the buyer and then ends up so sick, and suddenly sick at that??
Or are the pups being bought online and then shipped and the shipping is creating an illness or adding to a minor existing one making it significant?

That could be one cause. the puppies are almost always sick the whole time. if a buyer is well researched they will notice signs or ask questions and they will take the pup to the vet first thing when they buy it. under researched buyers will not go see the pup and just buy and have it shipped or go pick it up and see it for the first time the day they buy it. some owners don't know the symptoms of sickness in a dog. things like worms and such aren't visible. bad breeders pump dogs full of syrups and sugars to make them look lively until sold, later on they die of sugar crashes and all their illnesses. some dogs develop diseases from the breeders home but don't show signs until later on. it's all just an awful situation that is on the part of the bad breeders and in some cases the bad owners that buy them. (not saying the OP is one of these bad owners here)

If she came with a guarantee and has life threatening genetic afflictions.....then the breeder is responsible. If the pup dies, a reputable breeder should give you the option of a new pup or return of the fee. If the pup lives but, requires additional vet care because of a live threatening disease than can be corrected, your fee should still be refunded so, to help you care for those needs.

If she has low blood sugar/hyperglycemia; that can be caused by a multitude of reasons. Sent home too young, not weighing enough, taken from her mom too soon, stress of leaving her home, being handled too much, allowed to play to long, not fed as often as needed to be fed. However, your breeder should have provided you specific instructions on how to handle this situation and how to prevent it. So, this could have been caused by your inexperience on how handle a pup.

I am so sorry your puppy is sick. A perfectly healthy puppy can get very sick within days if they are not eating well. For you to get your money back you need to know exactly what is wrong with her. Things like worms and coccidia can be life threatening if not taken care of immediately. Did this pup have a wellness checkup right after you bought her? How old is this pup and how much does she weigh? Low blood sugar is know as hypoglycemia and can be very deadly if not treated immediately. I pray you puppy will be okay. If the illness is from worms or something like coccidia then I feel the breeder is responsible and should replace the pup should she die. The breeder should also help with the vet bill. Please keep us posted.

You made some very good points here...I have often wondered if its the time of the year and the puppies are getting chilled...are they being handled to much...is a small child holding and maybe dropping or squeezing them to tight
or is it just a bad breeder i don't know but it makes me very sad

It's probably a combination of things. Bad breeders, weather, inexperienced owners who don't do their research before buying. It's a perfect storm and unfortunately, it's the poor dogs who pay the biggest price.

What other problems does she have?
