When I knew I was getting a Yorkie I had so many names I just love but didn't want to decide til I got him home to see what would fit him. I never had a little one before and so before he came home I bought so many things...clothes, carrier, harness etc. I went to get him and on the way home in the car I had to stop and get more things for him and exchange his carrier. I said to myself if you were a girl I'd call you Tiffany with all that I have bought you...then started thinking of car names (love cars) and Bentley popped in my head. So, Bentley he is and I love my little boy to pieces!!!! |
Rio got her name from the Duran Duran song "Rio." I'm a huge Duran Duran fan, and it always makes my day when someone asks what her name is and they start singing the song!! Other people look confused and ask , "is it a boy?" and I have to explain the lyrics "Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand...". Hence my screen name too! We named our furboy Bullet because he's just a feisty, explosive ball of fun! That and my DH wouldn't let me name him Taylor (my favorite member of Duran Duran - John Taylor) because he was afraid people would think I named him after the Twilight actor Taylor Lautner (although he's quite the eye candy too!) |
I named my pup Calleigh. It means playful and feminine. That's her to a "T." I heard the name and I have always liked it. I am happy I chose that name for her. :) She likes it too, especially at dinner time. Lol! |
I love the name threads. Gatsby was named for the Jay Gatsby in the book The Great Gatsby. This book has a lot of meaning to me being the last book I read in high school I actually finished it my first week in collage(I graduated early) so it marked a transition to me in my life. I was moving the weekend I got Gatsby and My things wear spread out on the floor and one of them was My copy of The Great Gatsby, he walked right over and peed on it. I yelled "oh Gatsby" and he came running That was it. His middle name is Bogart after actor Humphrey Bogart (none of my friends know who this is it drives me crazy) I was watching a Bogart marathon on the classic film channel the weekend I brought him home. |
bailie-baileys irish cream, yum, and is the same colour beau- because she looked just like a dickie bow, with her ears up sonny boy- because he is our SPECIAL LITTLE SON, [trypod] gino- was named already, after gino d"campo italian chef[ so handsome]:D |
Great name! And great question. :) Blue was born on Christmas Day & his former owner named him Nicholas aka Nick. When Kari gave Nick to me & the name, Nicholas/Nick did not seem fit him. I was thinking of naming him Azul because he looked bluish and I always liked that name. When I asked my mom what she thought of Azul and she asked me why Azul, I said because he looked like blue & he responded to Blue. I said it again, he came to me. I figured he liked the name. Sake is Japanese wine & for some reasons my niece liked this unusual word very much and begged me to let her name him Sake. He responded to Sake, too. I liked Blue very much and decided to let him have both name--Blue Sake. :) |
When my baby was delivered 4 years ago, he was a tiny little thing, I sat and watched him for about 2 days so I could get a feel for his personality. He was very playful and kind of sneaky all at the same time and one day DH and I were sitting in the reclyners while he played on the floor in front of us, he got a hold of my house slipper and I said to hubby, boy he is like a little gremlin the little butterball. So I thought of GIZMO, and it stuck, at the same time he got his nick name cause he looked like a butterball so I also call him butter, pronounced ''buddur'', I'll say look at my '''buddur'' he just goes nuts when I do that......lol:teethysmi:happyboun:dribble: |
This is a great thread.... I have so enjoyed reading all the post!!! Sebastian -- a pom who with his read hair made me think of a little boy in trouble.. our neighbor had a son -- Sebastian who was a trouble maker.. the name just fit. Good thing we move very soon after getting Sebastian Sammy --( a lasa Alpso) girls name him... his Full name is Samuel Adams LA .. my dh said he was named after the beer lol Bailey-- after Bailey Irish cream.. he is a white shih tuz. we call him Tank alot because he is HUGE and just walks over the other guys Remy --- aww my baby!! She is my empty nest baby and I wanted a special name.. so I asked my dh what is the finest cognac? He said Remy Martin... so her full name is Remy Martin YT The funny part is... I really don't drink |
My Biewer is named Larissa and that name was already given to her when we got her and being that she was 6 yrs old we couldn't change it. The name is very sweet and means cheerful. My daughter loves it because her favorite baby's name is Marissa and we call them both Rissa. My Jack Russell is name Sir Flap Jack and we call him Jack. He was named as a play on our Female Jack Russell Terrior named Miss Patty Cakes. Rest in Peace my sweet Patty girl. My next puppy I will likely name Maggie. |
1 Attachment(s) Well, I saw this picture (attached below) and was trying to think of a name. My mom thought of Jackson because we had watched Walk the Line about Johnny Cash and liked his song "Jackson". I also am a fan of Jackson 5/Michael Jackson, and, well... it just stuck. I kept staring at that picture and just thinking Jackson! I like a 'big' name for a little dog. I kind of want to stick with the music -theme for my future next dog. I dunno, something to do with Elvis maybe, or Beatles, etc. |
I thought for sure my next yorkie would be named Lexie. But when I got my new pup the name just didn't fit. She was an empty nest gift from my kids. My daughter, a huge EMINƎM fan, found a breeder on 8 mile road & picked her out, so of course she thought about calling her Emmy..but again...just didn't seem to fit. Her third day with us, we decided on ZoE, and it fits her perfectly:), although my daughter spells it ZoƎ...lol |
Gracie -- I wanted "Lolly" (apparently a French name - knew someone named Lolly once), hubby and son HATED Lolly, so they suggested Gracie and that was that. She-devil might have been more appropriate!!lol Actually, Diva would have been perfect. Carly -- I wanted "Lolly" or "Harlow" (but she definitely wasn't a Harlow type), again "Lolly" was veteo'ed then I decided on Lily - but oh no, one of our daughters said, "no, if I have a girl I want to name her Lilly, so you can't name one of your dogs, Lilly. I said, whatever --- son and another daughter picked "Carly" for the kid's show: "I Carly" Harlow --- again, Lolly or Harlow, son and hubby said,"anything but Lolly" Izzy --- Her name was Bella and she knew it, so I thought how about Issabella, and eventually drop the bella portion because --- hmmm, daughter has a cat named "Bella" and of course, it was unacceptable to her for us to keep the dog's name "Bella" - can't have two bellas in the family (despite daughter living across the state!!) and of course "Issabella" is another name she wants for a future child - so Issabella, shortened to "Izzy" Uno (since sold, now renamed Charlie by his new owners) --first born of the litter Dos -- second born of the litter. Think I'll ever have a "Lolly" ??? lol |
We have an ancient cockapoo named Lady (from Lady and the Tramp) She was very quiet and easy going as a puppy so it fit. Our newest addition is named Maggie. It was a combined effort between my brother and my husband. They both looked at her and came up with that name. We call her Maggie the Ferocious Beast (I know its supposed to be "and the beast" but she is quite the character!). I really liked Sophie as well. |
Spencer and Winston, I don't really know why...but both names suit them. I've already decided my next yorkie will be Gibson. I know what I like and stick with it. |
My little boy yorkie is named Chibi. It is a japanese word meaning small or little, most people know it associated with toys. I have always appreciated japanese culture and I just love the language. I started naming all my pets japanese names that fit them. Chibi obviously fits my yorkie because he is small but more than that I think it is just who he is. |
Sadie is our oldest girl her nick name is( betsy )then there is Gracie she is our one the vet said would never make it as she was to small so i fed her with an eye dropper for 14days until she learned how to latch on to momma i called her Gracie for the grace of god her lived. and then there is Mikey he is our sucky boy love to be cuddled all the time and is a mommas boy .Our little Lexi was supposed to be caddy but it just didnt suit her .and our last one was 1.8ozs when he arrived and was born c-section and i really wasnt sure how he would make it but after hand feeding him as our momma was very sick. I didnt no how i would ever part with him ,our vet kept asking so what are you calling him and i said i had not named him yet so the girls there said after all of this you will never be able to part with him so we are calling him Keeper, he is 6 months old and his name is Keeper and yes he is here forever |
I was going to name my first boy Winston for Winston Churchill and call him "Winnie," which means friend. My father looked at the picture of the pup and said he was no Winnie. He named him Max. I countered with Maximus because I love the Russell Crowe character in Gladiator. Then our Italian neighbor said Maximo and it stuck. :p Teddy is named for Teddy Roosevelt because he has a real zest for life and likes to charge into things. He is also a great outdoorsman like TR. :D |
Noel I have always wanted a yorkie, everytime I saw one I would tell my fiance Robert. Robert who is the type of man who buys me things with meaning got me Noel for Christmas and gave me a picture of him holding her on Christmas Eve (she was not ready to come home yet) So Noel is my Christmas present and my love from my fiancee.:lovewings |
Naming 3 Yorkies is not easy!!!! 3 Attachment(s) It is so interesting how people come up with names!!! I am NOT as creative as some..... We got our first Yorkie in June 2004. She was a chubby short-legged girl with a MASSIVE coat. I couldn't wait to take her home. My sister's in-laws had a dog (years ago) named Shelby..... & I LOVED that name. So hence.... I named my new little girl, SHELBY! It suited her well..... Attachment 337290 Here is Shelby. In Feb 2005, I went to pick up a little boy.... my 2nd Yorkie. He was from the same bloodline as my little girl. I wanted a name that complimented his soon to be sister..... I had my mind set to call him "Simon". I picked my little boy up, and drove almost 3 hours to get home. Once home, my hubby walked in the door and said.... "Sorry, we just can't call him Simon..... he doesn't look like a Simon at all".... so after hubby & I played and watched our little guy interact with Shelby for awhile.... hubby suggested SEYMOUR. We both agreed that it was a much better fit for him. Attachment 337291 Here is Seymour. In Sept 2010, after a few YEARS of considering a third, a good friend of mine introduced me to a little guy she called Scandel.... It is funny because I called to discuss a dogshow with her.... and I told her my consideration of a 3rd dog. I asked if she had any puppies on the way & She told me she had a little boy that she was holding on to, but had decided she might sell him. So we got to meet him and he even spent a few days with us to see how things worked out before we purchased him. Of course, he fit in like a glove! Now "Scandel" was named for a reason. He is such an active little guy and very mischievious! :D He bounces off the walls when he plays! :jump28ib: But he also is so very loving .... and cuddly.... I just couldn't call this sweetfaced little pup something so "naughty"! LOL.... Hubby, again, said that he didn't look like a "Scandel".... and decided that he defintiely looked like a SEEGER! (not to mention that hubby is a musician....) Of course we used a unique spelling.... we didn't want anyone calling him "Bob"! :D LOLOL Attachment 337292 This is Seeger! That's my story, and I am stickin to it! :p |
I really don't have a story behind my dog's names. The only one that has a bit of a story is Cleo my basset hound. I've always wanted a basset named Cleo after watching that old sit com the People's Choice with Jackie Cooper. The rest are just names I liked no particular meaning. My cats however I changed all of their names. Too many to mention. |
Our little Yorkie started out as 'Violet' which turned into a little sing-song thingy " Vee-oh-let-ah tiny, tiny Petta" and she is now called Petta 90 percent of the time, as she is our "pet-ah". Silliness plus around here! |
My Lexi got her name by a car hauler passing us with lexus on it. It just fit her perfect |
