the teapots in the video are so cute!!

I have a large ( 25 lbs) shih tuz, we call him tank at times. But he plays so nice with the little one... and she is 3.5 lbs

My Thomas is 15 pounds..I like the 'teapot' term..I use it now when introducing him!

You guys are making me feel a lot better about my porky yorkie.

Anyone else somewhat concerned that now byb's have a cute term to describe their out of standard yorkies? Granted, I'd rather see teapots being sold than teacups, but still, it worries me. I love the breed how it's supposed to be, and out of standards are very adorable and make great pets, but I can't help but be concerned for the way the breed is headed.

Headed? Thats how yorkies started out, bigger.

Yes,they started out larger I am aware of this fact...however through selective breeding practices they became what they are today, under 7 lbs, ears erect, silky coat, etc. All the byb's not giving a crap about what dogs they're putting together are creating, not only grossly small yorkies, but teapots as well (which, once again, I'd rather see the larger ones than smaller ones) and now they have "cute terms" to jack up their price tags...just saying, I'm sure people though the term "teacup" was cute when it first came out to describe the runts of the litter, little did they know what would become of that term.
I do love the term teapots though, it really is a cute way to describe the larger yorkies :)

But they originated bigger and were meant to be bigger. I sure wish they were all breed bigger like they originated because then people wouldnt be buying them just for accessories.

I agree. It's one thing to have a spayed or neutered "teapot", but the woman in Petco had puppies. :thumbdown

I hate the fact that so many people are breeding their pet quality Yorkies. Most of the Yorkies I see around here look more like mixes than purebred Yorkies.

Totally agree. I do think that if the breed was a little bit larger, they wouldn't be so sought after (which would be a good thing, IMO). The same thing happens with Chihuahua's. Because people see them with celebrities in their purses, or as accessories, and they think they want the breed... if they saw more 10lb Yorkies (and NOT that that is by any means a 'big' dog), I'm sure more people would be "turned off" by them (not necessarily by us dog 'enthusiasts' here but general public).

I do understand the need and desire to preserve the breed and I know the standard has been 7lbs and under for quite a while now. But I do wish the standard was raised a little higher and I think it may turn off some BYB's because they wouldn't be breeding to accommodate the public anymore if they aren't as sought after. And also, say it was raised to 10lbs and under, then the BYB's, etc, that are still breeding would probably wind up calling 7lb'ers 'teacups' or whatever... but to me, that's better than these greeders selling little 2lb dogs to people.

I don't know, I just don't see a reason why they have to be so small. Obviously you all are going to think I'm biased since I have a 'teapot' myself, LOL, and I guess I am a little bit. But, Papillons, for example, have a very extreme weight difference which I think is awesome. Because you are still getting the same breed and temperament (for the most part) in a larger variety of sizes. I attached a picture of a Papillon at the top of the standard and at the bottom of the standard.
