Met a lady who says she has teapots I was in the petstore getting some more doggie tooth brushes and met a lady with a big yorkie. She said it jokingly of course,(the term teapot) but I had not heard of a yorkie being over 7 lbs. Her female was 8 lbs and had 6 babies. One is I think- 3 weeks old and she said it was 2 lbs already. I think it's a cute term and the sister (9lbs) to the new mom was adorable. (She was in the cart going shopping for treats) They seem a lot sturdier for children :) I gave her my number to set up a playdate sometime am a bit worried that the size might hurt my smaller ones. Just have to keep a close eye on them of course! |

Teapot and Teacup are used in different ways up here. LOL What she was telling you was that her yorkie was a little bit bigger than the standard. Make a playdate and enjoy...with a watchful eye at first for your little one(s). |
wow..ok I see lol :D They actually sound small now compared to when I did a search on yorkie talk and read about 15-20 lbs ones. LOL... I think that's awesome and when we schedule a date I'll tell her about that thread for the teapots. Thank you :) |
Great name for a larger Yorkie...Tetley or Lipton |

that is funny because teapot was a term we came up with on here so I didnt think anyone else used it |

When I was looking to add my second Yorkie and was considering a 4 pounder, I was told by several very experienced breeder/exhibitors here that their tinies have no problem running with the big Yorkies. In the end, I chose a boy close to Max's size for other reasons. |
I have a bigger yorkie and my mom just recently rescued a bigger yorkie about the same size as mine. When I first learned the word teapot on here I told her about it and now she tells pretty much EVERYONE when we are out that Callie and Sammy are teapots lol. |

We are looking for a teapot yorkie. Our's is 20lbs and we love it. Can you ask her if you can give her my email address? kiminabinetgray@hotmail.com I would greatly appreciate it!!! |
hahaha so funny someone used that expression outside of yt! that's great! i have told some yorkie people i know about the term and they love it, word must be getting around about teapots lol! |
3 Attachment(s) I love the word teapot! LOL. So cute. I first read that on here. Jackson is my 16lb boy. His BEST doggy friend is 6lb Yorkie, Nala, and they play great together. They wrestle, and run, just like the big dogs. No problems. :) |

My Mom has a teapot around 18lbs and she also has a 3lber the little one rules the roost lol |
I love teapots too. Chase is 15lbs and Calvin is 6lbs. They play together great, although sometimes Calvin is too rough. He's gotten much better though! I was worried when we brought Calvin home, he was just under 3lbs, and Chase was 5 times his size! Chase knew to be careful though, and let his little brother be the boss :) |
the teapots in the video are so cute!! I have a large ( 25 lbs) shih tuz, we call him tank at times. But he plays so nice with the little one... and she is 3.5 lbs |
My Thomas is 15 pounds..I like the 'teapot' term..I use it now when introducing him! |

Anyone else somewhat concerned that now byb's have a cute term to describe their out of standard yorkies? Granted, I'd rather see teapots being sold than teacups, but still, it worries me. I love the breed how it's supposed to be, and out of standards are very adorable and make great pets, but I can't help but be concerned for the way the breed is headed. ps, I'm sure your pups will do great with the larger yorkies :D Have fun on your play date :aimeeyork |

Yes,they started out larger I am aware of this fact...however through selective breeding practices they became what they are today, under 7 lbs, ears erect, silky coat, etc. All the byb's not giving a crap about what dogs they're putting together are creating, not only grossly small yorkies, but teapots as well (which, once again, I'd rather see the larger ones than smaller ones) and now they have "cute terms" to jack up their price tags...just saying, I'm sure people though the term "teacup" was cute when it first came out to describe the runts of the litter, little did they know what would become of that term. I do love the term teapots though, it really is a cute way to describe the larger yorkies :) |

I agree. It's one thing to have a spayed or neutered "teapot", but the woman in Petco had puppies. :thumbdown I hate the fact that so many people are breeding their pet quality Yorkies. Most of the Yorkies I see around here look more like mixes than purebred Yorkies. |

I do understand the need and desire to preserve the breed and I know the standard has been 7lbs and under for quite a while now. But I do wish the standard was raised a little higher and I think it may turn off some BYB's because they wouldn't be breeding to accommodate the public anymore if they aren't as sought after. And also, say it was raised to 10lbs and under, then the BYB's, etc, that are still breeding would probably wind up calling 7lb'ers 'teacups' or whatever... but to me, that's better than these greeders selling little 2lb dogs to people. I don't know, I just don't see a reason why they have to be so small. Obviously you all are going to think I'm biased since I have a 'teapot' myself, LOL, and I guess I am a little bit. But, Papillons, for example, have a very extreme weight difference which I think is awesome. Because you are still getting the same breed and temperament (for the most part) in a larger variety of sizes. I attached a picture of a Papillon at the top of the standard and at the bottom of the standard. |
