Do Your Yorkies Take Vitamins When we got Zach the man in the pet shop said we should bet NuVet vitimins. We've been giving them to all of our dogs. I asked the vet and he said it's okay. It really helped the bassets with their shedding and one of the bassets has a soft tissue issue that hasn't acted up since she started with the vitamins but I was wondering about who gives their dogs vitamins |
Yes, but only because Ellie eats homecooked, so they have to be added. A pup eating an AAFCO dog food has no need for vitamins unless there is a health problem. Too many can actually throw off the nutritional profile of the food and unbalanced things. If your pups are doing well on them, great. :) They just aren't necessary though. |
No, I do a combination of home cooking and (now) a good commercial food so they get everything they need from that. I firmly believe, just like with humans, if you are getting all you need from your diet you don't need supplements and you can over supplement and cause problems. |
Bailey takes supplements. When he was 12 weeks old the vet told me that he had LP and needed surgery. I wanted to look for other alternatives.... so I started my search. I found Synovi granuales (no only in pill form, so I crush). Ever since I've had him on that his LP has not popped out at all "knock on wood". He also has chronic Pancreatitis and IBD so I have him on BioLiv, Power Probiotic and Lypozyme. It's all great for him! |
Well the reason I give them vitamins is because Zoe and Zach are pretty lousy eaters. They are totally picky. I've been giving them boiled chicken and rice because they had a little diarrhea and everything cleared up so now I'm slowly adding their dog food to it, All my small dogs eat Health Extension which my vet suggested but now I think they are getting tired of it. Anybody know of any dog food for fussy eaters. I'm going to ask my vet on Saturday when I bring Zoe and Oliver in for the shots but I just thought I would ask. I'll also ask him about the vitamins. If he tells me to stop I will. |
Bailey used to be a picky eater too. I now feed him Natural Balance Fish and Sweet Potato which he LOVES. The only thing with that is there is not enough protein in it, so you have to give either more fish or chicken. I also give green beans and organic pumpkin. |
I home cook and make the Healthy Powder from Dr. Pitcairn's book, NATURAL HEALTH FOR DOGS AND CATS. I think dogs that eat commercial dog food should also be on some kind of vitamins because "if" any vitamins ARE added, the boiling process would kill those off. Plus, I doubt very seriously if the rendering plants are going to be adding hundreds of gallons of vitamins to their large vats. |
The only supplement i give Lexie right now is fish oil, but i'll be adding Cosequin as a preventative measure because my vet said one of her legs are a little loose. Her kibbles are quality enough that she doesn't need anything else |
Vitamins Sprocket takes a vit B-complex daily, his diet is a combo of home cooked and natures balance. I am a believer in vitamin B for both humans and animals. For humans (me) it helps strengthen my hair, skin texture, keeps me from bruising and being a redhead I have horrid tender skin. I asked the Vet about the vit B for Sprocket, she said "can't hurt, one a day and any extra he doesn't need, he'll pee it out". Vit B is water soluble, even though Sprockets are liver flavored, I buy both his and mine at GNC. I have been told that with the holistic approach you can change the skin "flavor" so the fleas don't like your dog with vit B, though I haven't tried this. |
The only supplement that Beamer and Lil Bit get is the Isle of Dogs Royal Jelly as recommended by Gail (Gemy). |
Snickers takes a daily supplement, Denamarin, which has Sam-e and Milk Thistle. He takes it because he has MVD. When I start home cooking again, I'm sure he'll be taking more vitamins/supplements at that time on the recommendation of my nutritionist. |
