Very shady!
 

I live in condos, so far it has been nice here. No problems. Recently one of our neighbors called for maintance, apparently the maintance guys "let their chiuahah/italian greyhound mix" out when they were in their condo. The neighbors said they called for maintance when they got home from work their dog was gone, they thought she was scared and looked everywhere, they never found her. They called the office and she said " oh maintance reported that your dog got out"

That story doesnt make sense to me, number 1 why didnt they try to catch her.. they live on the 3rd floor so she would have had to go down 3 flights of staris, 2nd of all why didnt the office call the owners when they found out the dog was out.. NO ONE TOLD THEM till they called for themselves.


So with all that being said, our water heater went out, we had to call manintace! They came over yesterday to fix it, (dh wasnt home) I heard them on the patio speaking spanish and saying "yorkie". Then they came back in and one of the guys said " hey arent those dogs expensive? How much are they..." I just said " No not really I have seen them for 200 dollars now." He then asked me how much I got mine for, I just said I got him from a friend..I said he has health issuses! ( haha ) So then they said I have to let the fan dry out the water, they will be back Monday to pick up the old one and Tues to check it out and pick up the fan.


So at this point I am nervous, for some reason in my head I think when they come back my dog will be gone. So I called the office and said I do not want them to have permission in my house if I am not home. I said I want them to come pick up the old water heater now, and then Tues they can wait till I am home to pick up the fan. So then she called me back and said they are going to come pick up the old heater...

It was all very strange, at first the manintace guys said they couldnt take the old water heater with them until the weekday bc its a company that comes and gets it, then all of a sudden I said I didnt want them in my house with out me home and they came and got the old water heater...

Maybe I am over thinking this, but it was all very strange, if that other dog wasnt "missing" and they didnt ask me how much my dog was maybe I wouldnt think they would steal my dog.

Am i over thinking this?? I told Dh until they come get that fan I am going to take Pnut to daycare, so he isnt here! DH said it doesnt matter we put a note that they can't come in with out our permission, but I just have a bad feeling about them!



I always stress about Pnut getting stolen or something, That would be the worse thing ever,. I hear of stories, and I always try to make sure he is safe... Dh then went up to the office and talked to one of the office girls and told her stright up that He doesnt want maintance in our house if we are not home, and he heard of the story about the missing dog. She said dont worry I will make sure they don't go in there if you are not home.. So thats good.

I would feel the same, especially after their conversation.

Do what you need to do for peace of mind, in my opinion.

Don't trust anyone around your Yorkie when you are not there. I don't know how many times I've heard the same exact thing when I'm out and about, or have work done at home......."oh a Yorkie" and "they are expensive huh" and "how much are they, how much did you pay". Red flag!!!! Be extra careful.

I have never given permission for my apartment to be entered anywhere I live. I always say I need to be there- if there is something that needs to be fixed and I cannot be home I will have someone I know come sit in my apartment for me. When anyone comes in my house that I don't know I lock the dogs in a room where they won't be seen. A few times they have barked and the workers always say "got a big dog in there, huh?" and I say YES. ha! thankfully my dogs bark like big dogs! I feel that the less people that know I have Yorkies in my house, the better.

I know I feel the same way with people. All people see with our dogs is $$ and that is sad, these are our babies to us, not $$. Its sad that someone would want to take away or even think about taking away someones baby to make a buck! This is a very sick world, I to wish I had some mut that I didn't have to worry about all the time, but all you can do is protect them and do what you have to do to make sure they are safe. Im glad that Dh went up to talk to the office, he told me that he will talk to the maintance guys as well if I want him to, just to say hey, I heard what happen, if my dog ever comes up missing I know who to look for. But I think Pnut will be ok as long as we do not give them permission to come on.

Its just sad that I have to worry about something like that.

Very True, and very good idea!! Its our job to protect are babies from people that see them at $$ signs!!

Even if you had a mutt, you would worry. Your heart has no dollar signs.

Ya I know, I was trying to say like if someone saw me with a "mut" THEY wouldn't be so concerned about the mix, people are more concerned with Yorkies bc they know they are worth money.

With the going price of yorkies you probably cant be careful enough. It is too bad some people just see them for the money.

I agree with you 100%. I wouldn't want anyone in my home when I wasn't there whether or not i had a dog.

I agree! I would put peanut in daycare just to be careful. That is SO scary.

That is so scary. I would have your husband tell the maintenance men that the office knows no one can come in with out you being there. That you heard about the neighbors dog that got out and if that were to happen to your dog they would be the first ones you'd be talking to. That way he's not out right accusing them but letting them know you know! Is it possible to get an inexpensive alarm system just for the door? How about a webcam or security camera? I always lock mine up when we have work people in the house. But it's pretty easy to tell I have a bunch of little dogs.

Wow! That IS scary! I would definitely be really concerned!

When we first moved into our home over 9 years ago we had a german shepherd mix. We have a note on our pest control account that says "owner has big dog, call 24 hours prior to going. Gate also locked"
It worked. Of course we no longer have our big baby but we never had them remove the note. Works like a charm :cool:

They call me and if I just need them to do outside stuff and I am not going to be home then I will usually tell them to go ahead. I keep my house locked up tight when I am not there.

Unfortunately you probably signed a waiver when you signed your rental agreement saying that the office can go in without your permission for needed repairs and for emergencies.

Glad to hear that you were so observant of them talking and all and can protect your little guy from them.

Is there a room you can keep your fur baby in that they can't get to that you could lock from the outside?

I'd be scared, I would also tell my neighbors about my suspicions.

This is why I gave my condo association a fake key to my house.

If they want in, I have a cell. They can call me and I'll decide if they're coming in.

I would change the locks. If you own the condo, NOONE should be allowed access to your condo. It's different if its an apartment complex and all the aparetments are own by one owner. I dont think i'd even feel safe living there if someone had access to my condo.

When the girls were teens and I had to be gone during the day I'd tell them not to open the door to anyone, but of course there are times when they needed to, so at the time we had a Dalmation (barker) and I told them if anyone wanted in to tell them the dog was vicious and they couldn't come in...one day the insurance man camen (we had recently bought a new house) and they told him that...big old insurance increase: for that dangerous dog!!! Nonetheless, I called them and told them what was what I told the girls to say for protection and they lowered the bill.
Double edged sword on that one.

If they absolutely MUST come in while you aren't there, would it be possible for you to board your dogs somewhere for the day?

Please follow your gut instincts and do not let these men in when you are not home. Can you change your locks? I wouldn't trust anyone in my house alone with my baby boy. This is terrible that we can't even trust people anymore.

We live in a condo, and no one is permitted in without our prior permission. I would suggest you give your front desk written, signed instructions that no one is permitted in your unit without your prior knowledge and only if you are home.

Does your building have cameras in the common areas? Ours does. Our foyer, which we share with 1 other resident, has a camera recording 24 x 7. If you do have some type of monitoring, that may help your neighbor whose dog was lost.

20 years ago my ex and I were living in an apartment complex. One of the groundskeepers went into the office and took our key out of the key box and robbed us. That's another story.

You might want to ask the office if they keep their key box locked at all times. Forget what I just posted and change your locks and provide a fake key or none at all to the office.

Hopefully, if... and I am saying if, they are responsible for the disappearing dog I would hope the office personnel aren't in on it.

My thoughts just went everywhere on this one but I do know for a fact that this CAN happen!!

That is a great idea, I think I am going to do that!! I am not good at writting that stuff, what should it say..? I also want to say something like if its an emergency, I want to be informend who is going in there!!

OH MY GOSH! I am so sorry that happened to you! Did they find your dog? I mean they would have to know that someone with the key was in there...

It absolutely can happen. I used to live in an apt complex. One day I had to call maint. for something. I had my mac laptop out since I was doing homework. Not even a month later, someone broke into our apt, stole our laptops and jewelry. My roommate couldn't even tell that we had been robbed except she couldn't find her computer. She called me to ask if I borrowed it and when I asked if mine was missing too, we then realized what happened.

There was a staff meeting the day it happened so the maint. guys would be accounted for but it doesn't mean that they didn't get a friend to do it for them. Come to find out, there were several apts robbed that day without signs of breaking and entering. We all got together and realized that we all had maint. work recently. These guys knew what they were coming for. The office refused to hear our case and denied that it was their staff.

I wouldn't put it past the maint. people for a minute!

Thank you guys for your support! And also some wonderful advice! I am going to write a letter for the office that no one is allowed in my unit without me being here, also I talked to DH and he is going to have a talk with the manintance guy... he isnt going to threaten him or anything just tell him that we told the office they cant come in with out us being there and that we heard of the dog that went "missing" and if Pnut turns up missing we know where to look.

They came and picked up the fan so now they have no reason to come here. Unless I make a maintance call, but honestly if something happens DH can fix it. We live in Condos but we are renting them. So I feel a little better, but just for my stress level I am still taking Pnut to the vet tomorrow to drop him off, he has to have a recheck anyways, and on tue I am going to take him to daycare, that will give me 2 days to get my letter done up and everything.

Also DH talked to the office girl upfront, she is really nice. She has always helped us and got whatever we needed fast, her name is Diamond. Dh told me that she told her we heard about the missing dog and we do not give permission mantaince to come into our home with out us there, and she said not to worry she will take care of it. He really stressed to her that Pnut means the workd to me and if something happens to him not even 10 millions dollars would fix it.

I really cant believe that someone would do that, if they did take the dog they will get theres I believe in karma. I hope that they didnt and I hope they get their dog back but she has been missing for 2 months now. The put up fliers and I guess the owner of the guy told DH that someone had called on a blocked number and said that they saw the dog in the grass playing with some kids,,, it was really odd he said. Then the guy said he was going to get his dog back, that was the last he heard of anything. They are still looking for her, they went door to door to see if anyone knoew anything or if they can hear her bark or a sign or something!


I would be LOST, if something happened to Pnut, he is like my life. He is a part od me. He is snuggled in between my legs, I am laying on the couch and I have the laptap prooped up lol its really hard to type!! haha He has been really attached to me today!

Anyways thank you all for caring, and giving me some good pointers! I think we will be ok now, but my guard will always be up!

when i got my first yorkie about 25 years ago i was so seared some one would get my joy stick ( hubby named her that ) that we had an alarm put in and now with my lil porscha i don't leave her home without it being turned on grandson called before Christmas as we were out and he forgot his password he was so seared that the cops would be here before we could get here bet he will remember next time

Yes!! Do those things on the 2 days and don't take any chances!!!!!! OMG!!!!! People cannot be trusted, esp greedy people that ask about how much your dog is!!!!???? Whoa!!!
