Yorkies and Ivermectin My vet gave my yorkie, she is a rescue and older....not sure of her age, Anyway, he gave her an Ivermectrin based wormer this morning. Tonight she is walking around like she is drunk. HAve any of you had this type wormer before and did it hurt your baby. We have only had Tink for a few months and have grown SOOO attached to ehr. I am really worried about her. My husband is even in love with her. They nap together.... It is so cute and she LOVES him. Any advice is appreciated!!! |
That's really scary. Did you call your vet and ask his opinion? I assume your rescue girl was heartworm negative before he gave her that type of wormer? Stumbling around looking drunk could be hypoglycemia (try some nutrical or karo syrup) or could be a neurological problem. I would give some nutrical and see if she gets better, if not you probably need to have her checked out by the vet in case it's complications from the wormer. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it's just a minor thing. Teresa |

I googled and found this site which gives side effects. One of the side effects is uncoordination and it says you should seek treatment asap! I hope your little one will be okay! Symptoms such as uncoordination and dilated pupils are of particular concern and can lead to death if treatment is not sought immediately. Hi Lisa. Is she on any other medications? It's very important. Pls call your Vet immediately. There are dangers with Ivermectin & other medications such as Comfortis & Heartguard. Pls read the attached thread. My Vet was not even aware of this when I questioned it. Hope all is going to be ok. Pls update when you can on her condition. Your concerns are right on with the side effects she is having. Definitely get her checked! Pls call your Vet immediately! http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...s-ladymom.html |
I read Connie's post about the side effects how scary. I hope everything turns out okay. I would advise taking your Yorkie to a vet as well. They are too tiny to take a chance with. |
I wish I had seen this thread earlier. It is posted in general discussion & not seen in sick/injured-emergencies talk. :( I truly hope & pray your little girl Tink is better by now and doing ok. |
Checking back in. Hope we hear updates on Tink. |
I hope your baby is better today. Great job Connie getting that info for her. |
Tink is still not doing well.... I did call my vet, he sent us to the vet ER in a larger town. They say that it is either an allergic reaction or the vet gave her too much. No treatment is available and she has been sent home to live or die...This is so hard. She is so pitiful and my heart is breaking. SHe will drink and eat, but can't move. I have her in a tote that is tall enough that she can't fall out of. She is on comfy balnkets and her little bed underneath. We are giving her pedialyte as well. I just wish that we had better vet care in the woods here. We live in a very small town and the vets are mainly cow doctors to be honest. I am praying that my husband and I can get her thru this. She is a precious, precious girl. |

YorkieBichonBella, I don't mind if you post in the Emergency section. I should have posted there to begin with I guess. I was and still am just sick over this. I want her better so badly...NOW!!! She is so pitiful. I just wish there was SOMETHING that I could do for her. I am trying to make her comfortable. She is eating and drinking and she stood on her own for a few seconds this evening. I HOPE and PRAY this was a good sign. Thank you SO very much for your prayers. We need them. My husband has grown SO attached to her that it is pitiful. He is SOOO worried. HE stayed home today and helped take care of her. AND plans on staying home from work tomorrow to help with her. HE is such a good Yorkie daddy!!! |
I am so sorry that she is sick! I'm sending a ton of positive thoughts your way!! |
Thank you, I am SO heartsick over this. My sweet little girl is not doing good at all. I just wish I could make her better. |
I am so sorry to hear about poor Tink. Sending prayers to you all to give you strength during this very difficult time. |
Lisa, I just re-read yr recent post & see that she is drinking and eating so that is a good sign. Maybe this will help to absorb this Ivermectin reaction. Hoping others who have experienced anything like this will offer their advice. Be strong Tink! We are all sending our Love & Prayers! |
I can't offer advice but I am praying for Tink. |
I am reading that activated charcoal helps. Here is a number you can call too: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...l-hotline.html |

I am so sorry to read your update. I can't believe that the ER vet did nothing for her. It sure seems that something could be done to help this poor baby. I will pray for her and for you and your husband. Hugs to you. |

Can't they at least get her on supportive care - IV fluids, etc? To keep her strong enough to fight this? |
I am praying your little one can pull through this. Can you call a larger vet clinic and see if they can give you some advice. Maybe ask your vet to make some calls and find out what to do. I think he should be doing more. |
