Dangerous to have your dog sleep with you? I've been hearing about the dangers (to humans) of having your dog sleep with you. Any thoughts on this one? Just curious. |
My yorkie sleeps in bed with me, but usually on top of the covers. My other dog has always slept underneath the covers, snuggled right up next to me. We've never had an issue and he's done it since I got him at 4-5 months old. Guess I've never thought about if it is good or bad. Though I don't think its up for debate. He refuses to sleep anywhere else. :) |
Gatsby normally sleeps on the floor but he has slept on the bed, on top of the covers what are the dangers to humans? I have heard nothing about this |
I wouldn't want it any other way. Love snuggling with Sophie at night. |
I did some research after I posted my question. One of the sites I went to had a short news video here: Study claims sleeping with pets in bed might be dangerous - KDVR My adult daughter mentioned today that they don't have their dog sleeping with them anymore because of dangers to humans and what she had heard. This wasn't the first time I had heard this, so I decided to post the question. The information was not alarming stuff nor anything that would make me want to kick Copper out of the bed at night. I just wondered if there was something I was missing here or is the media hyping yet another story? |
Well, Rosie has slept with me since she was 6 months old. I am not going to change that. I like her snuggling up to me. :D |
This was on the news this week a lot. My feeling is - if there is a dog in the house, there are dog germs all over the house. So, if there are dangerous germs present, they won't only be in the bed. Our kiddos sleep with us every night, and we love their germs :D. |
Both of mine sleep with me. However, they are regularly taken to the vet and checked to make sure they are healthy. They are professionally groomed on a regular basis plus bathed every two weeks by me. They are never taken outside without coming right back inside to have their feet cleaned- if they run around outside they are bathed completely. They get their teeth brushed- I know what they are eating- they aren't outside eating roadkill or anything. So I feel there is no risk for them to sleep with me. Would I leave a dog outside in my backyard all day and then bring them right into my bed? probably not. So I think it is just something that each person needs to decide for themselves- mine aren't getting kicked out of the bed anytime soon- thats for sure! :) |

I like having Copper sleep with us. I'm glad there are a lot of us around who agree!!!:):aimeeyork |
[QUOTE=ArmaniMan;3410460]Both of mine sleep with me... QUOTE] Very similar to our situation. They only go outside when we are walking them, and we have a rule and we stick to it: Clean their paws with at least water on a paper towel when we get inside, every time - would you wear a pair of dirty shoes to bed?? And of course, wash with anti-bacterial soap IF they do manage to get into something on their walks. Also, we check their butts reguarly to be sure everything came out AOK ;) Our little girl does get her anal glands manually cleaned when necessary... I think with these types of precautions, there is no problem with them sleeping on our bed, and we've been doing that for about 16 years now with no issues we know of. I do not let them on our pillows, and not even on the sheets, only on the blanket or spread on top. |

My mom was just telling me about this too! She said she saw it on the news twice this week. Of course I had to reply with "well, smoking is even more dangerous" that always gets her to stop! The funny thing is whenever we go home to visit, Bandit scratches at the door to the basement (that's where she usually falls asleep) and jumps on the couch and digs under the blanket and sleeps with her the entire time we're visiting her. And if she comes here without my Dad to visit he sleeps with her the entire time! Nothing better than sleeping with your little fur butts :animal-pa:p |

And as far as kicking my babies out of my bed...I'm with everyone else...NO WAY!!!! :D:D |
My 6 always sleep with us as well. Our local news had a story on it also. Like I said to my husband... Most people that have there pets in there bed, also are very good about vet check ups and shots, stool checks, baths ect. The news here were saying people can get parasites from the pets. I have mine checked every 6 months. I give them a bath twice a month. If they can sit on my lap, give me kisses and I carry them around, why can't they sleep in my bed. I have had my dogs in my bed for almost 30 years and I have not gotten any dog germs yet. I know some people that do not even shower but every two or three days..... I think I will sleep with my pups, Thanks. If it gets me sick, then Oh well . Mine are not going anywhere. But I must say, I do change my sheets every three days though. |
Ya know.......there are a million studies on one thing or another, we simply cannot follow them all and have to use our best judgement as we move thru life. Secondly we do not get to choose how or when we will leave this world, but if the choice were mine, passing on in the comfort of gizmos bed with him snuggled up beside me, is a hell of of way to go with a smile on my face. I think I shall just file this study under ''thanks for sharing'' and keep sleeping in ''GIZMO'S bed.:teethysmi:yorkiesar |
