Has anyone experienced their dog seeing "Things" My friends dog Lola started having these episodes yesterday where it is like she is seeing ghosts. She turns around quickly looking for something. We at first thought she might be seeing gnats or something like that but no. Sometimes she will bite at her rear but mostly she overreacts to sounds, movement. She is always playing with Buster but yesterday she hid from him like she was afraid of him almost like she did not recognize him. I actually went over at lunch to check on her because Jack was so concerned about her change. She did seem psychotic for a while but then seemed to go back to normal and started playing with Buster and interacting with us again. Her owner said she had another episode in the middle of the night and went back to normal. I just was wondering if anyone had gone through a similar experience? |
Pets can pick up spirits much better than we can, but unless she's being harmed, I wouldn't worry too much about it. ;) |
Dogs can hear and see so much better than we can so it's possible he was hearing or seeing something that humans can't. With that being said, I know someone with a small Yorkie that started "seeing ghosts" at about 6 months old. (those were her exact words). She said Tucker would stare up at the ceiling and sometimes act scared of something she couldn't see. Long story short they found out Tucker has MVD and the increasing ammonia levels caused him to do this weird activity. I'm not saying your friends Yorkie has this but it might be something she wants to get checked out. I will cross my fngers that it's only a Yorkie picking up on things people can't. Teresa |

Soon after I lost my two dogs Crystal and Spike I got Brooklyn. Sometimes she would bark into the empty corner where Crystal used to sleep. It used to scare me to death:eek:. Now if she does it, I say hello to my babies over the bridge and tell them I love and miss them. Might not be anything, but it makes ME feel better. Edited to add: she hasn't barked into the empty corner in a long time now that I think of it. Hmmm.... |

My younger son had a hamster in a hamster house in his room on his desk. This was about 7 years ago. The hamster passed away and the house is gone and his furniture is rearranged now. When Sammy goes into his room, he looks at the location where Teddy's cage used to be and growls. |
ok.. having grown up in the mountains of Virgina I "cut my teeth" on ghost stories.. still scare me |
Well... It could be something like a petit mal seizure. If it goes on for more than a second or two. would have a vet check it out. On the other hand, I heard an old wives' tale decades ago that dogs do indeed see ghosts. The story was that if you got behind the dog and looked directly between it's ears you would see the ghost too. I never wanted to try that. Or it could just be that it hears something that you can't. |
Well, this thread freaked me out. Roxie does this sometimes too. She will get all upset and angrily bark into an empty corner of the room...as if there is something there that is really annoying her. DBF always laughs and says she is barking at ghosts. |
My Clarissa did that only we discovered it happened when she was losing her eyesight. It happened gradual to her, but all at once to me. As age progresses, it becomes scary I think to them to not be able to see things as they once did. They bark and look in strange corners. |
I am living in the apartment my parents had this was my dad's last home before he passed. Sometimes Andy will stare at a doorway and growl. That freeks me out. |
Bella does this too!!!!!! She will be happily laying on my lap sleeping then jump up, look at a wall..........and start barking. She LOVES to bark at my empty staircase. Jayden, my 3 year old grandson was watching her bark at the stairs and upper level, and I asked 'Bella what are you barking at?' and Jayden says, 'Shes barking at the man that lives in the hallway.' I said oh yea which man?? Jay say, 'the one right over there'. He points to an area of the upstairs railing and wall, and NOTHING is there. I still get chills to this day telling this story. |
They do say that small children and animals see things we don't. Which I do believe. Two of my children have been 'seers' and two saw nothing. Now apparently my grandson is another 'seer'. The name 'seer' is something I came up with not anything that I know a meaning of. Just meaning that a 'seer' in my definition is a child that talks about seeing things that nobody else can see. :D |
My mom has a cat that freaks out and stares at random empty places. He is psycho, you can't touch him or anything. My Mom swears he sees stuff we can't and that's why he is always crazy. :D I do believe animals can sense these things better than we can. |

Omg! @ Suze225....that is scary! :( But yea, that is something my mother always told me that animals can pick up supernatural things. I mean if my cat can sense when a rain storm is coming (she runs up & down the house like a maniac!)....then I'm pretty sure she'll be able to sense spirits. & I've always heard babies can too...I've never really witnessed it until the other day when I went to go visit my close friend and godson. So we're sitting in the living room & I'm holding my 2 month old godson, Elijah. And behind me on the wall there's old family pictures. But there was this one picture Elijah would not stop staring at! I stood up & walked away he stared at the picture...I turn him around he TURNED HIS HEAD & STARED AT THE SAME PICTURE! The picture that Elijah was staring at was a picture of my friends uncle who had died in the early 90's. & they tell me that he ALWAYS stares at the one picture. I wasn't really creeped out...just amazed. |
Jäger has been doing the same from time to time lately (he is almost 5 months). He always barks and growls at the same area of my apartment. The thing that gets me is that he always looks at me, then back at what he is barking at (the thing he does when he wants to get my attention). It kinda creeped me out at first but I just tell myself that he see's my gardian angel. He is usually ok once I place him in my lap and pet him for a few minutes. He goes right back to normal then... Strange. |
It is very strange and YES very creepy and kinda scary too!!! My daughters used to talk and see things. My daughter had the black man in her room from age of 3-5, she refused to sleep in her room. It was horrible. My other daughter would have literal conversations with her friends she called 'batman' and 'robin'. (One night we were driving from Ohio to MN and Sydney was 3 at the time, and she started crying and very upset, and I said, what is wrong Syd.......she said.......'batman' told me I was fat. Now THAT was scary, both my husband and I sat in shock for a long time and he doesn't believe in 'ghosts'. |
All of our dogs, have done the barking, growling and outright snarling at blank walls, doors and stairs. |
Any time your dog is exhibiting strange behavior, you should have her evaluated by a veterinarian first to make sure there is not a medical reason for the behavior change. |
Yes, that is probably true, about the strange behavior. I think our 'strange' behavior is a normal part of being a dog, and their intuition. Well not so sure about the kids though....LOL. Just kidding!!!! |

It's not like you're suggesting her dog has psychological problems...lol oh well |
This post gives me the creeps. Harley's never done anything weird like that, although every once in a while he'll be intently chewing on a toy in a "downward facing dog" position and just stop (toy in mouth) and stare into space. it doesn't last long, usually cause I pat him and he immediately returns to play. gosh I live in an apartment in a house that's built in the 1800s now I'm starting to wonder if there is a ghost in here. |
How old is the the dog? I remember our baby, when he was a couple of months old started acting strange, turning around very quickly and trying to bite his back. It scared us very much, especially when he did it in the middle of the night. Turned out he had worms ( my husband actually saw one , sticking out . . . He never did it again after we took him to the vet for deworming. |
Pnut has done this 1 time. At our old apt, Dh pnut and I were sitting in our bedroom on our bed. We were all laying down and talking. The a/c wasnt on, the fan wasnt on nothing. All of a sudden pnut jumps up and starts barking, he looked up at the celing and his head would move side to side like he was following something. Then his head moved over the the closet and he stopped and stared at the closet and started to bark. The door was cracked open, then like he would start looking at the celing again,, back and forth like something was flying in the air... it was REALLY creepy!! It lasted about 5 mins then he stopped looked around, and layed back down. DH and I were really creeped out haha! |
