I think Nikki is a Silky Terrier
 

I went to the AKC dog show near my house today and saw some gorgeous yorkies. I was looking at the silky's and started talking to a silky breeder. After seeing her silkies and finding out they can grow a long coat like yorkie's I am pretty sure he is a silky. I thought silky's coats only got so long then stopped. She also said they are not as stubborn as yorkies and can live 16-18 years. I think Nikki would look just like a sily if I cut off his top knot and cut him shorter. I could do DNA but it doesn't matter we love him which ever he is.

Patti are you being serious, or are you teasing???? I have seen a lot of Silkies, and never one that looks like your Nikki.

Your yorkie is absolutely gorgeous. All i know is that a Silky is bigger then yorkie's and they have more a pointed muzzle . Perhaps one of those breeders of silky terriers could tell you more. Her body looks like a beautiful yorkie's , however the muzzle on her IN MY opinion could be a silky, I am no expert though.

I just read in anther post that your Nikki is a little one. I strongly doubt she is a silk terrier.

We have a Silky puppy right now that at 6 months is barely 4 pounds......and she is out of one of the current top ranked silkies and the WB of last years speciality who were both normal size.......so Silkies can be smaller.

A few of the bigger differences are:
Tri-color - their topnot should be lighter than their muzzle
Longer muzzle
Body is longer - pup should be 1/5 longer than tall (so more rectangle)
Hair color - wide range of acceptable blues - from almost silver to the dark steel blue

At the Silky speciality last year, there were many silkies with hair to the ground (and some cut to be above the ground).

Nikki was found on the streets of Chicago and was taken from the shelter by a yorkie rescue. He has the long nose, thinner longer ears, longer body and he is taller than all of my others. He only weighs 5 lbs but is very thin due to his old age. So when I saw silky's today their faces and body type looked just like Nikki. But since Nikki has a full coat and top knot I thought he can't be a silky. Although he never has grown much hair on his snout. I think it may be due to his being so old. I wonder if he could be a mix of yorkie and silky or just a yorkie with a long nose and ears. He has a beautiful silky coat.
I was just wondering because everyone who sees him remarks on how different he looks than my other 3. I would rather know how old he really is than if he is a yorkie or silky. The 2 vets that have seen him thought he was at least 16 years old and that was a year ago. I can't believe in 2 weeks he will have been with us a year. Thanks for the input.

I think your Nikki is adorable and so lucky to have you. Here is a site with a bunch of Silky pictures concentrated on one page with some mixes. They are mostly pets so their hair is in many different lengths but it gives you a good idea of what many Silkies living in pet homes look like. For the most part, they have pretty similar characteristics. I think Silkies do have longer noses than Yorkies but they are also broader.

Your Yorkie looks nothing like a Silky to me...I would be insulted if I was him..LOL Nikki is much too cute to be anything but Yorkie...

Thanks! He is a sweetheart and I always wonder what his early years were like. His teeth were rotted below he gum line when I met him so I am guessing he had some hard years. Those pictures make me think he is not a silky. His nose is long and thin.

LOL I won't tell him I was questioning his heritage!

I have been told many times that Maggie is a Silky. I bought her as a Yorkie and I won't do DNA, if I did it would be to try to put the broker out of business. I don't know how to attach a picture here but you can go to my albums and take a look. All opinions are welcome!

I think Nikki looks just like the main dog on the silky terrier site. I agree with you Patti, I think he might be a tiny silky terrier. Either way, he's adorable!

I raised Silkies for a time and I never met one that weighed 5 lbs. as an adult. They tend to be very sturdy and weigh in the 8-12 lb. range. I think Silkies can grow longer coats, but, again, I never had one that had a floor-length coat. Silkies do have long lives. My oldest Silky was 17 when she passed. I doubt your baby is a Silky, but may have some Silky genes.

Hey!!!! :o I love Silky's! lol. I am unsure of my Celine at this point. Would love opinions, I need to get an updated pic on here! At any rate the yorkie is beautiful! IMO it looks yorkie to me too! My Celines hair does not do that.

Wow, I think your Nikki is a close ringer almost for my Bridget. She is the one laying in a chair in my avatar. She is a rescue. She tips the scales at 6lbs but seems way smaller. My 7lb girls tower over her. She is delicate boned and appears very fragile, although she now has some meat on her little bones she feels sturdier when you pick her up.

I went to that website and looks the same. Mine has a 1/4 tail. We're working on her leather ear, so her ears are still nekkid. But this was a posting on that site that someone sent of their silky and it is Bridget's face.....

She does look a lot like Nikki. She's pretty.

I think you baby is beautiful and that is that! :p But I agre with gumbysuz, because you are getting mixed opinions they must be some silky genes.

I can see it... I think he looks like a Silky in a WAY, but more Yorkie to me. A well-bred Yorkie and well-bred Silky are actually really easy to tell apart. It gets so confusing because there is so many BYB'ers and puppy millers, etc, breeding out of standard dogs.

I really really think Jackson is a Silky but everyone always tells me (on forums) that no way... he is just a poorly bred Yorkie.

I've been in contact with 7 different AKC Silky breeders and all have told me he looks all Silky to them but they cannot say with certainty of course. But it's something I often think. He just doesn't really act like any Yorkie I've ever met. I can't pin point it exactly. And this Silky Terrier description, fits him to a TEE:

This loving, little terrier is very intelligent, courageous and alert. Affectionate, spunky, cheerful and sociable, they like to be close to their master. The Silky may not be the breed for every home. You must be willing to add another intelligent being to your family as a Silky can be much like having a 2-3 year-old child loose in the home. They do not like being neglected or forgotten and if left alone for too long a time they will find entertainment that may not be to your liking!

A Silky isn't hyper but they do have tons of energy and love to play fetch, go for long walks and in general, be involved in whatever the family is doing! They are loving but independent in nature. They are not generally what are considered 'lap dogs'.

I have fallen in LOVE with Silky's through my research. I'm 99% sure my next dog will be a Silky Terrier (from a good breeder -- since I got Jackson from a BYB). They're the perfect blend of an Aussie Terrier and a Yorkie, imo. I love that they still get the pretty hair but are a bit sturdier and maybe more 'terrier'. Genetically, the two breeds are pretty much identical, so the differences are really subtle. There is just something different about them, but like I said, can't exactly pin point it.

Nikki is a gorgeous boy. Maybe he has a little Silky blood in him, but he has a lot of Yorkie characteristics.

Britster, I think Jackson has a lot of Yorkie characteristics. His face looks Yorkie to me, and his body looks perfectly proportioned like a Yorkie. As was noted earlier, Silkies are longer than they are tall. They don't have the legs of a Yorkie.

Jackson is def. longer than he is tall! He's actually got a really long body, lol. You can kind of see his long legs here. It's more noticeable in person really.

Odds are, he's a Yorkie! Since I did not get him from a good breeder, no thought was put into what her dog would produce, ya know. I'd be really curious to know what his littermates look like!! I wish I had got their contact info.

I hope we can meet in person one day, I really wanna meet your boys!:) Lauren(Banditsocks2) and I are planning to do some sort of a day/night trip to someone dog friendly this summer, maybe we will head closer your way!

When you measure from the shoulder blades to the base of his tail, that measurement is longer than from the floor to his shoulders? I've always thought Jackson has nice long legs, which I don't associate with Silkies. I know there is quite a variation in Yorkie leg length, but I've never seen a Silky with long legs.

It would be fun to see Jackson's littermates all grown up. It would be doubly fun to meet them and see how they compare in personality.

All the Slkies I've seen have more of an upward slope to their foreheads and their foreheads are a bit flatter in the front. Does that make sense. Anyway, Yorkies have rounder heads.

I think one of my new adoptees, Trouble, may have some Silkie in him. It's in his conformation, do you use that word in the dog world?, and in his coat color. Either that or I think he was very nearly a chocolate Yorkie. Many of his nails are a reddish brown and the skin around his eyes is a lighter color. His nose leather is also off a bit. It's hard to describe. He is such a cutie , though, and so lovable, I couldn't care if he was the hunchback of Notre Dame.

After having him only a couple of months he's my baby and that's that. :love:

I have no idea, I had never even heard of a silky terrier until I joined YT.
One thing I can be sure of though is that Nikki is gorgeous and I wish I had hair like that! ;)

Even though Tucker is a mix.. I think he is silky/toy poodle mix and not yorkie/toy poodle mix. He has a longer snout, similar to a silky but not a poodle and he definitely more "stockier" than a poodle or a yorkie and he wieghs more than a yorkie or a smaller toy poodle should. He parents were very small, 4 pounds and he is 9 to 10 pounds, all of his siblings are all under 4 pounds..so it really doesnt make much since..lol.. anyways, your Nikki, is beautiful!! :)
