checking out the link that was posted and looking at the pictures (copied one to post on here) Tucker has the exact same face, minus the ears that stand, Im pretty postive Tuck is part silky and not yorkie..

after reading what others have posted about silkies have shorter legs.. yeah thats my Tuck.. he has these little short, stocky legs...lol.. he must be part silky.. ok Im done now.. either way.. I love 'em..:)

I don't know about the rest of you, but unless we intend to breed them and I sure don't since I get all my adoptees neutered immediately, it doesn't matter except for our curiosity. Nikki is so cute.

I went on a Silky Terrier site and for most of the pictures I had a very hard time telling the difference. I wonder if a lot of the puppy mills have interbred the two where a lot of them are mixed now. If so it makes a good combo.

He is 11" inch from the floor to his shoulders, and 15.5" long. His girth is like 17.5" around.

Silky's were 'created' by mixing Yorkies and Australian Terriers together so they are very much alike.

I've actually heard of some BYB'ers using Silky mothers (because they are larger, and give birth 'easier', and sometimes have more puppies) with small Yorkie fathers.

That makes total sense. When you look at Yorkie pics and Silky pics you can hardly tell some of them apart.

But when I was in the UK I noticed that Yorkie and Silkies both look different than they do here. The Silkies have much more of the traditional Silky look and Yorkies are bigger but with the very rounded head and rougher coats. The almost all looked cotton coated.

I agree. I have never had a desire to breed anything. I leave that to the experts. I was just curious having just seen silkys at the dogs show and seeing a resemblance to Nikki. I think that is probably the case with some of the non standard looking yorkies. We have no idea where Nikki is from so anything is possible. We love him either way.

I know nothing about how to judge between a silky or a yorkie, but I do know your dog is beautiful. Wow!

I agree, it is just a matter of curiosity for pet owners who don't breed. I love my boys no matter what they are. Like others here, sometimes I think they are part monkey. :D

i just posted about his in general... i think you just confirmed my Tikka is Silky
or at least half lol... her top knot is blonde, while her muzzle is staying quite , rich/tan, her body is 11in long and 9in high at 8 months old she is almost 7lbs. glad i found this post, might do a DNA test for fun. Tikka is amazing either way!

A breeder friend in my area has commented that she sometimes wonders if there is a little silky in some of the yorkies that she sees in our area. Personally, I think they are cute either way!

On a side note, a gal who works with my husband showed him a pic of her new silky. She went on to explain to him that the breeder she got him from told her the silky is a yorkie with particulary silky coats. That silky's are yorkies but not all yorkies are silkys. He didn't have the heart to tell her any different and explain that yorkies are a totally different breed.

On Sunday, at the dog park, I had a woman come up to me and said "Is he a Silky Terrier?" I told her the usual... I don't know, I bought him as a Yorkie, he's either just a big Yorkie or a Silky, no idea really. Anyways, she went on to say that she had a Silky Terrier for 15yrs and he looked JUST like Jackson. She said she was really attached to that dog and missed him. She got him from a breeder in the area who is no longer breeding.

Silkies coats won't grow as long as a Yorkies, and less hair on the legs and clean feet. Enough hair for a topknot, but again won't grow as long as a Yorkie's. Std weight for Silkies: 9-10 lbs Yorkies: 7 lbs. Tail carriage is different. Silkies are longer, Yorkies more proportionate, height is the same at withers and hips. If I read right. Also, Yorkie topknots are dark tan at the roots, and gradually lighten toward the ends.

Nikki's got too much hair to be a Silky. He looks level (topline), do you trim his feet? If yes, another point toward Yorkiedom. Yes, his muzzle is a tad long, but his coat is way long to be a Silky, their coats follow their body outline, and should not touch the ground, as Nikki's does.

My vote: Yorkie!
