I do understand your point, but if ranking mattered wouldn't you see tons of Labs and German Shepherds for sale in the pet stores? They were #1 and #2. If someone wants a Yorkie it's usually because they have seen one and not because of what the breed was ranked. It may influence the breeder, but I don't think it matters to the person who buys them. I agree with you that I wish they were not so popular. | GSD's and Labs ARE very poorly bred these days. That's why you find so many aggressive GSD's with terrible temperaments. And people try to make them "bigger and bigger!" You'll see "GIANT GSD's for sale!" and the breed has begun to have lots of problems... Labs are also a huge problem with over-breeding and non standard Labs! I see so many variations of Labs nowadays. They make some with this gigantic Rottweiler-looking heads, and that is not how a Lab is supposed to look! Any breed that becomes popular, for whatever reason, is subject to greeders, moreso than breeds who people don't care about.
It's bound to happen with a lot of breeds. TV shows, movies, etc, definitely don't help the matter. Like said above, sooo many kids (including ME) wanted a Dalmatian after seeing the movie. I'm so glad my parents never caved, but a lot did! Celebrities toting around Chihuahua's and Yorkies in their purses also made people want them. Golden Retrievers became big after being featured in movies like Air Bud. JRT's become more popular after Fraiser... sooo many people went out and got a JRT not knowing what to expect at ALL! |
