America's Top Dogs Yorkies have slipped to #8 so hopefully they'll fall off the top 10 list soon and greeders will leave them alone. America?s Most Popular Dogs - TODAYPets |
Wouldn't that be great! I love this breed, but they aren't the best choice for the average American, so I hope they become even less popular. |
There must be a lot of lists. I had just read on MSN that the yorkie was # 3 German shepherds, long the benchmark for reliable and even-tempered work dogs, retain the No. 2 spot, while the tiny Yorkshire terrier, a favorite therapy dog in nursing homes and hospitals because of its loving and sometimes exuberant personality, is listed as the third-most popular breed in the country. Who cares what they think. Yorkies are #1 in my book. |

Not according to the AKC....yorkies are #3 Theirs is the list that bugs me. :( American Kennel Club - American Kennel Club Announces Most Popular Dogs in the U.S. |
It's sad that the very attributes of our Yorkies personalities and charm which make them so adorable have also made them such a vulnerable target for unscrupulous profiteers and owners that are uneducated to the needs of this very special breed. :yorkiesar |
I think this list is in backwards order, with the Shih Tzu at #10, and the Lab at #1, so the yorkie would still be around #3 (and that corresponds with other 2010 AKC lists that I've found online). I certainly agree--while the yorkie is #1 in my heart, I'd love to see the demand drop so yorkies are bred by people who know and love the breed, not by people looking to make a quick buck. Of course, I wish the same for all breeds--to be bred by people who know and love that particular breed! |
Yorkies are # 3. Here ya go! Which breed is America?s top dog? - TODAY Pets & Animals - TODAYshow.com |
I agree That's how I read the list. Anyway they are number 1 in our book!! |
Same thing happened with Lhasa's in England, when Saxonsprings Hackensack won Crufts Supreme Champion in 1984, everyone wanted a Lhasa. When 101 Dalmations came out, everyone wanted a dalmation. They want the breeds without doing any research into the breed and what goes into the care of them. Yorkies will always be #1 with me, but I will gladly have them lose popularity so the greeders will go out of business. |

It most definitely is affected by the rankings! The ridiculous amounts of yorkies in shelters began when they moved up on the list a few years back. There was always a problem, but that compounded it unbelievably! As for people gettiing labs.....let me tell you that there are massive amounts of labs in shelters that are being euthanized daily! German Shepherds not so much, but I just think that is because they do not have the reputation that labs have as being family dogs (even though people have no clue that labs are not good family dogs unless well trained). Yorkies are small...they are ranked high and many people looking for a small dog want them for that reason....and the greeders are more than happy to place them with them. Does not matter to them that so many will end up homeless in no time. :( |
I just did a search on Petfinder for labs in my area and got 30,709 . Yorkies: 1,531 |

I also hope that Yorkies fall off the top ten list. Then the people looking for them would be those who had researched the breed and were sure that Yorkies were what they wanted. Instead of seeking them out so that they could say they owned the most popular dog breed in the world. |

it's really sooo sad these greeders breeding for pet market and then throwing an innocent life into the hands of someone that doesn't know how to care for them for their lifetime. |
Im glad they have slipped but doubt there will be any less breeders breeding for them due to the ranking. The economy and their ability to sell them have a bigger baring. |
Shame there are "Lists" at all, I choose my boy because I loved him, I first looked up about Yorkie care, health and traits etc to see if it was a breed I could look after and then looked for the puppy from a good breeder. I would never buy a dog because it was on a list of popular dog breeds.:( |

It's bound to happen with a lot of breeds. TV shows, movies, etc, definitely don't help the matter. Like said above, sooo many kids (including ME) wanted a Dalmatian after seeing the movie. I'm so glad my parents never caved, but a lot did! Celebrities toting around Chihuahua's and Yorkies in their purses also made people want them. Golden Retrievers became big after being featured in movies like Air Bud. JRT's become more popular after Fraiser... sooo many people went out and got a JRT not knowing what to expect at ALL! |

It is horrible that people breed them just for the more money because of the # of popularity. I hope they get off the top 10 sooner rather than later. I LOVE Yorkies, dont get me wrong. But some people cant handle this breed only certain people can. But I wouldnt trade my Yorkie for the world. |
