Looking at a pup help!
 

This is my first post so I want to say hello to everyone.
I'm going to look at a 10 week old male yorkie today.
Is there anything I should be looking for to make sure we get a healthy, happy pet?
My 15 year old daughter saw a yorkie and has fallen in love with the breed and its all she wants for her birthday, but I must say I was also smitten with them. :)
We have one other dog in the house, a toy poodle who is very gentle and loves everyone, even cats so I don't see any problems arising there.
I just want to make sure I get a healthy dog, I have been down the road of a sick puppy before and it was heartbreaking. :cry:

Hi and welcome! I would look for a perky active pup with clear eyes. Make sure you get a health quarantee.

Welcome to YT!! When you go to look at him there are a few things to look for. His tail should be wagging, and he might be a little nervous, but you don't want one thats too shy. Good luck!! and again welcome to YT! :D

welcome....I think you will be able to tell fairly quickly if this dog is heatly or not. Just stick to your sinces...b/c I know how it can be when you just want something so bad. But I have a good feeling about it. I hope all goes well. godd luck with your new baby if you get him.

What shots the puppy has had, food he is on, is there a health quarantee?
Look for bright eyes, wagging tail, all around happy puppy.

All the suggestions you received are excellent, I would add
for you to see the Dam and Sire to get a hint on how large this
little male is going to get.

I remember a friend I worked with fell in love with my Chipper who is still 4.6lbs, they were thrilled to tell me they bought a Yorkie while on vacation in California. A few months later their new Yorkie weighed 13lbs. and was still growing, of course they still loved him but he was known as their
"Porky Yorkie".

The puppy is one from a breeder, not a pet shop, and the mom and dad will be there for me to see also.
I guess I'm just a bit nervous!

Another newbie - seeking some advice on purchasing a puppy.

Hi. I am new to yorkietalk :) as well and am in the same position as Sharon. I met some folks who had a couple of yorkies and fell in love with them and I am now looking to purchase a puppy.

I did a lot of research on the breed and found a breeder in my area. Last week I went to see the puppies. There are just a few things that concerned me maybe you can put my mind to rest. Everyone says to look for an active and responsive puppy but the puppies I am looking at are only about six weeks old, the breeder will release them at eight weeks. They don't have any visible signs of health issues but there are not that active. How responsive should a puppy be at that age? I can't get a sense of their personality but am a little concern that the parents are a little timid. Environment vs. heredity - which plays a greater role in the puppies disposition?

The mother's coat seems pretty nice but the father's coat is a little dull. I am wondering if it has anything to do with the quality of food. The breeder said she is feeding them Purina One.

Finally, the breeder is not docking (is that correct spelling?) the puppies tails. She said she used to do that but it is no longer a strict standard for the breed. If I wanted it docked I suppose I could have the vet do it.

I appreciate any thoughts you to offer.

Hi Lisa,
No, you cannot get the tail docked by a vet. It has to be done 3-5 days after birth. If you want the standard look (no tail), you will have to buy from a different litter. It can be tricky going by how the parents act. I know my Tiah is great....however, when people come, she gets sooooo excited. However, she is normally calm. I'm sure some can be just the opposite....calm, but very nervous around strangers. Look for the signs of a healthy pup that were mentioned. I picked mine out at a couple weeks old, so he wasn't showing ANY personality. I wish you the best. Again, if you want a pup with a docked tail, take your time and look around a little more.
