I know you are feeling terrible for this happening but it was truly an accident.Dont take privilages away from your furbaby. I drove home for almost 2 hrs yesterday with a soft pillow on my lap so Cookie could nap on my lap the whole ride. I talk to him too when I'm driving all the time. I look over at him and pet him. I am now planning on getting one of those pet consoles (carseat) that you put between the two front seats. You can put a harness on them and keep them in the carseat. I am seriously looking into one after yesterday's trip. He likes to walk from the passenger seat to my seat the whole time we're in the car. Yesterday he didnt because of his stitches. Look into the carseats.GW Little has some really cute ones in different sizes.

my dog has a safety harness, it looks like a big harness with with sheepskin on it, the seat belt slips through it and it works great, I cant think og the name of it, I just remembered it it says four paws on it I think

Another accident story, but not mine:

I am a pilot, and the airport at which I kept my plane had an accident a couple years back. A guy was bringing his 4-seat, very nice plane in to land. On final approach, when he should have been doing his checklists, he was distracted when his dog started jumping around. So... rather than go around and try another landing, he got his dog calmed down, and attempted to land. However, he forgot one critical thing... to put the landing gear down! CRUNCH. Nobody was hurt thankfully, but when questioned by the FAA he cited his dog as the contributing factor to the accident. OOPS! The runway was shut down for hours while they tried to move the plane without damaging it further.

So, it could be worse....

Hey, don't be so hard on yourself.

This is something I think about all the time. Sadie has a car seat with a clip that attaches to her harness.

How did your Yorkie handle that accident? Was she on a leash, so she could not get out and run?

I have a dilemma for Thanksgiving. My boyfriend is taking Sadie and me to my bros. house for Turkey Day. Her car seat does not fit in his car, so I am going to take her on my lap with a harness, and leash on.

It is a two hour drive.

Any other ideas? I want her to be safe.

Kate, I don't want to scare you but, it is extremely dangerous having her travel on your lap. If there is an accident the airbag will/could depending on her postion kill her. If you can not invest in a lookout seat for the backseat you could make your own by staking pillows up so she could look out and be entertained. You then would hook her to the backseat seatbelts so in the event of an accident she would not go flying around in the car. This would also protect her when you stop for gas and the car door opens and she couldn't jump out!

Thanks so much for the tip, as it is too late to get a back seat car carrier before Turkey Day. I live in a small town, and they don't have anything like that here, or nearby.

The passenger car seat can be disconnected, but then I am at risk if there is an accident.

I will try the backseat idea, but she loves laying on my lap.
However, this is definitely the best as I don't want to risk not having a lap dog.

Kate, this is what the lookout seat looks like. I have both the backseat and a console one because an airbag wouldn't hit the console area. I got both of mine on ebay and saved some $$$$. I know it is to late before the big trip but thought you might want to see what it looks like.

We have used my grandaughters baby carseat when she outgrew it for the past 8 yrs to ride our babys. It works fine. Matter of fact I strap 2 of our 5 lb. babies in it and they love to ride, are very comfortable and safe.They each wear a harness hitched to the strap on the carseat back. So if you can't find any fancy dog seats, a baby carseat will do the same in the back seat of course. I'd never ride them in the front, if the airbag went off it would probably kill them.

Sorry to hear about your accident and glad nobody was hurt, but there is a lesson here for others to think about and thank you for sharing your incident. It might save lives someday. :aimeeyork :aimeeyork
