How many pups in a liter? About how many pups does a yorkie have in her first and only liter? I want up to five Yorkies. I have a female and was considering getting a male letting them have one liter. Them getting them and the pups fixxed and keeping all the pups. I am also considering getting a stud paying for his service and then keeping all the pups. My baby girl will NOT be bred more than this one time and I will NOT profit any $'s from her just her beautiful pups to fill my house. I will not being doing this for atleast a year, so right now I'm just exploring my options. |
How big will your baby be when she is fully grown? That will make a difference. The smaller Yorkies usually have from 1 to 4, maybe 5 pups. Birth is harder on the smaller ones as well. You might have to let her have more than one litter to get all five of your yorkies. |
She will be between 4-5 lbs. I would hope that she wouldn't have over 4 cuz I want to keep her entire liter. If she has less that is OK too, I just want up to five Yorkies total but less is fine. :aimeeyork |
my litter was 4 pups first breed she weighed 4.5 lbs a breeder friend of mine just had a litter of 5 from her 3.5lb dog and had to have a c-section and they spayed ....smaller the bitch the larger the problems...her last litter was 1 pup... another lost 2 puppies out of 4 one to a cleft palette another born with his intestines out. there is no formula nor way you can predict a litter size...just hope for the best all your puppies live and are happy and healthy. best to you |
litter size I have bred for many years..litters have been from 1 to 7 pups with the average litter being 3 to 4. I have never found the size of the mother had baring on the number. It had bearing on the ease of the gestation and whelping, nursing and after care by the mom. I have had big 7 pound girls have one puppy and 5 pounders have 7. They were all fed the same, had the same life, genes and care..it is like rolling the dice and waiting for the number to appear. Best wishes |
I think it also has alot to do with bone structure of the dame whether large or small. My own personal experience is an average litter of 4, dames 5 lbs or slightly under, smaller litters and higher percentage of mortality rate for puppies. But again its genetics too. ( I do not bred less the 4 3/4 lbs) I do not have years of experience either and that also can play a big role in reportings. |
litter size I do think bone structure is very important when it comes to whelping. I do not know if it has anything to do with litter size. The dam ovulates a certain number of eggs, some do not implant, some may die soon after and are reaborbed..never being aware they were there. A bitch may ovulate 6 eggs, 6 eggs are fertilized, 1 does not implant and dies, another is reaborbed at 2 weeks gestation..so the 6 eggs turn into 4 Yorkie babies in the end. I do like a line of free whelpers who have at least 4 pups and some are fairly predictable, but others are not. I have had stud service clients ask me to breed their female 3 times, because that is how many pups they want. If only it were so simple. lOL |

browniesmom622, thanks for the link. I just made a $300 donation. I am sorry to say though that I will be allowing her to have one litter and I will be keeping all of her puppies whether it's 1 or 7. To you breeders, thank you so much for the info. You have been a lot of help. I still have ATLEAST a yr to research and my vet will come to my house for assistance if I need her to. I will be haveing an ultra sound done for her also so we will be better prepared. |

I'm probably going to make some people mad, But here I go. I think that was unfair for you just to post that website, when she was just asking about mating her yorkie. I mean I understand that there are a lot of unwanted dogs out there and I also know that a lot of these puppies get put to sleep beacuse people don't want them. I would think and hope that all of Our Yorkie members have more sense than that. I understand why she wants to mate her baby. She wants more yorkies to love. I also am going to mate my Bell. And I already have more people who want them, than Bell could possibly give birth to. SO if responible people want to mate their dogs I think they should with out people making them feel bad. I just wanted to say to Lexi's mom I dont think you should apolize for wanting to have a litter of puppies.....you are even keeping them! Its not like you are producing mutt puppies just for fun. I hope you arent offended. |
It's a personal choice whether you breed your own dog or not...of course we should keep in mind that there are "homeless" pets our there. I don;t think she meant to be mean or make anybody mad about that link, she simply posted it...and believe or not, there is tons of people that have no clue on how to adopt a pet of a certain breed. But of course, it is a personal choice, i personally adopted a chihuahua mix and i am also buying another purebred yorkie..i don;t think that makes me extra nice or extra mean...it is just what i feel is right for me! |
