Adopted Yorkie too mellow... A couple of days ago, we got a Yorkie from a no-kill shelter. She is 3 years old and has had puppies. She has also been spayed. She is very mellow, doesn't jump, or bark, likes to lay around. Do you think she will liven up and start playing once she gets used to her surroundings? Start barking? She has only barked once? |
Welcome to YT. :) Congratulations on the new addition to your family. Could be that she is adjusting to her new home and, possibly, her previous living conditions gave her little stimulation, little room to play. As she bonds with you, she will probably respond to your invitations to run and play. Best wishes and enjoy your girl. |
Welcome to YT. Since she's had puppies, perhaps she came from a kennel and has never had the opportunity to do some of the normal puppy things. It will take lots of patience and love for her to acclimate to a new home and bond with you. Going for walks with her would help you both to bond. |
Welcome to YT and bless you for adopting this little girl. I agree with previous posters that she will more than likely need some to time to adjust to her new home and lifestyle. I bet you will have your own personal lap warmer in no time. ;) |

A general rule of thumb with a rehome is to allow about 2 weeks for adjustment. Here is a link with lots of great advice: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/tra...nt-advice.html Welcome to YT! Thank you for opening your heart and home to a rescue. You will not be sorry that you did. The love they give back is wonderful! |
Welcome to YT! Some yorkies are hyper, some are mellow. They're personalities are unique and so are their quirks. :) I have a quiet mellow boy that slowly is opening up and becoming more and more playful. :D He doesn't bark yet, but he does growl and plays more. Oh, and he whines when he wants something. It might take time to open up but she'll get there. |
Welcome to YT! I am sure she will come out of it! Taycie has changed so much since the day I brought her home. Taycie was the very quite, shy, picked on one, in the litter... When I brought her home she slept a ton and always was nervous around new things... I remember wondering if she would ever bark or make a noise?... OH HOW THAT HAS CHANGED! Sometimes I think, Aren't you tired yet? Give her some time, I am sure when she understands she is in her forever home she will come out of her shell! Congrats! I am so happy for you both:) |
Give her some time, she is probably scared, this is all new to her and she may have had a hard past. Sadie was the same way and she is a ball of fun now. Just be patient with her and she will come around. My Babies are spoiled :littleangRIP Sophie Lynn Mommy loves and misses you |

I wouldn't complain about her NOT barking though to be honest, and NOT jumping-she sounds either timid or well behaved or both! Only 3 and has already had pups-I hope she's almost 4 and it was her first and only litter! Was she just altered? Do you know anything about her history? Congrats though for getting your Yorkie baby and bless you for going to a rescue! I got a very abused pup, from a rescue like you-actually a pound but they have a "rehab no kill in house" anyways, he hid for 8 days, he was okay during the adoption process slightly timid-we got home and ran under tables, behind the couch-was a shadow on the wall dashing here to there ducking into "safety" hiding places! He took a lot of work, he's a maniac now! My Elvis is literally (I was just talking about this on here) the definition of a "lap dog" okay if there was one he'd be pictured next to the definition. There's another forum on here about Yorkie's playing fetch-I noted how he looks at me as though I am retarded when I throw a toy and try to get him to chase it like my other two dogs...well guess what last night he chased a toy and didn't just try to kill it he brought it to me and I threw it again, he joined in the other dogs in playing fetch for the first time since I've had him-almost a year! So it takes awhile-a week or even a year! I'd be hesitant to say you'd have any major behavioral changes without a serious reason though-just adjustments and whatever work you do with them-well and sudden surprises like an interest in fetch! We want pics! What's her name? |

She sounds precious. You are lucky you have found a well-behaved yorkie. It will take time for her to adjust. I have two rescues: My Yorkie, Izze, who came to me at 8 yrs old--was a puppy miller mommy--- and will be 11 this January. She also was abused. Chachi, my chihuahua, who came to me when he was 11 months old and is now 8. He was abused in his previous home. It took Chachi a couple of months to adjust and then he became "normal." Izze, really, it took a long time for her to adjust and she still isn't very interested (she's not fearful, but apathetic) in/towards strangers. It took her 1.5-2 years to stop circling and to gain confidence to cuddle with my family. It took her a month to learn how to beg and bark and be naughty lol. I think that it depends on her experiences, her age, and her natural tendencies/personality as to how long it will take for her to get acclimated. Just have plenty of love, patience, and understanding. Kudos to you for getting a rescue! You'll love her to pieces. |

Congrats on your new addition, how wonderful for the both of you. My girl will be 2 in Jan. She came home a a well behaved puppy, doesn't jump, only barks a a very strange sound or outside. She is a low keyed, very mellow girl, which actually works for us since my office is in my home. I believe that has played a big roll in her behavior, she knows our work routine 5 days a week. Plus, I have a mini pin that barked like crazy and I was determined not to encourage barking with Zhoie. Like, I never ask her if she wants her food, etc, which encourages them to bark. Good luck, but don't worry she will come around and steal your heart before you know it. |
Thanks everyone for all the encouragement. My 10 year old daughter wanted a puppy and we talked her into three year old Zoey. She's a sweetie, but my daughter wanted a dog to play with, fetch, etc. It's only been one week so I hope the adjustment is coming!! I posted a picture of her, Zoey. Thanks!! |
