She sounds like a very sweet Yorkie! :) Maybe she's scared...I'm betting she's very confused. Do you know how many times she has been rehomed...maybe she is still living with the fear of being taken out of yet, another home. It could be that she hasn't learn how to trust and feel comfortable in a home...she could possibly be waiting to make another move. It might take her longer to bond because of what she may have been through. I would give her time....plenty of time so that she can feel like she's finally in her forever home.

I looked in your album. Zoey looks like a sweetheart! Adjusting may take some time. Depending on your daughter's personality, maybe she would enjoy the challenge of training Zoey to do tricks and eventually play fetch. Training is a great way to bond. You could pick up books at the library or store, or show your daughter videos on YouTube. Keep in mind that training requires patience.

I agree, walking would be a great way to bond. After a few weeks of adjusting maybe agility training. That could help strengthen the bond and playfulness. Good luck :)

Her picture is beautiful. She is a doll. You need to remember that she is three yrs old and not so much a puppy. She has lived some sort of life and/or lives before you that she may need to really spend a lot of time adjusting from before she wants to play, if she ever really does. She may just want to be a lapdog. I hope your daughter is not going to be too disappointed it she doesn't turn out playful. The rescues I have, well Brie, still will not touch a toy or treat. She does try to run with the pack. Bridget will take a crumb of toast from me, but that is it. She still gloms onto me, follows me and never leaves me. She will not play or pick up toys. It's been what, going on three months, they are 6yrs old and I wouldn't be surprised if they never ""play"". But they are learning how to love and trust. Maybe your daughter will be content with a snugglebug.

That is a beautiful picture of Zoey. Perhaps you could talk to your daughter about rescues and what it means to Zoey's life to have rescued her. You could talk to her about the abuse some rescues have endured, the abandonment that many have to deal with psychologically, and together maybe you both could research some ways to bring out Zoey's personality. You may find a convert in your daughter when it comes to rescues. She's old enough to understand.:)

Sounds like my little girl! I rescued her from a backyard breeder in Harlem. She was afraid to come out of her crate for two days and was hand shy. She never barked and had very low energy.

Each day that I have her she becomes more and more like a "real" dog. I love to see her coming out of her shell and I'm thankful when she barks when someone is at the door.

I think Zoey will need lots of quiet time bonding with you. The trust and stability are essential. Also, she may have been feed a poor diet. Once you start feeding her healthy food, her energy might pick up. Finding the right kinds of toys that get her excited will go a long way to help Zoey feel playful, as well.

I love the pic! I just took a few on my iphone and I'm trying to post them here. She's awesome and thanks for rescuing her! All my best, Lisa

Elvis is technically my daughter's dog...she's 11`we've had him almost a year now...he, like I said in another thread, isn't much of a dog :D, she loves to hold him and brush him and just enjoy him, it's hard, you really have to match the personality of the dog with the child-but in general I'd never get a dog just for a child...
our Miniature Scnauzer is technically supposed to be my 6 year old son's dog but she's really more so Dad's dog now and my son took over my rescue after his behavior adjusted...the personalities all matched up..and in reality they're all my dogs!
Zoey is beautiful! Would love to see a pic of her with your daughter after they get adjusted! Here's my daughter and Elvis and my son and Scoobers they're personalities are perfectly fitted-we got lucky

So much truth and wisdom in your post. I love it! :D

Kaji isn't really a rescue, but he sure acts funny sometimes. He's afraid of almost everything. It took me a few months (2 or 3) to get him to want to play. At first it was just chase and I was the only person he would play with. If anyone else tried, he would cower and run to me to hide. Fast forward another month or 2, and he started to show interest in toys. He started to fetch a full sized tennis ball. He went mad for it! But, he would not play outside with other dogs. Fast forward to the present, and he is a fetching fiend! He loves his squeaker balls, squeaky toys, and this cat toy that he loves to "kill." He still won't play with many people, but it's a whole lot better. Next step, agility class. :D

Aw! This is a precious story. I wish more folks knew just how long it can take for a doggie to "blossom". Love and patience are miracle workers! At first she would only play with a superball and only for a minute or two... now we have a full toy portfolio to choose from. hee hee

Squeaky toys - :thumbup: (although I found out the wrong way that stuffed toys can be choking hazzards - why do they fill them with batting?!)

Hi and congratulations! When I got Vinny (my yorkie who was 11 when we got him), he was mellow and didn't bark or do much. Now, 2 years later, he barks a lot and walks around the house like he owns it. I think your yorkie will get less mellow. But that might just be her personality.

This is the cat toy he has.

Or something similar, his has no catnip that I know of.
If you bat at it, it makes electronic squeaky sounds. It's perfect to hide under pillows and blankets and he digs for them. It's hilarious to watch! He doesn't tug yet. I have to teach him how, but I have no idea how to teach him tug can be fun.
