Just Neutered, HELP! 1 Attachment(s) ok, so my little fur baby just got neutered. He hates the cone around his head. Its like he is disable when he has it on him. He cant do anything when he has it on Eat,Sleep, potty, lay or even walk. He cried all last night when I put it on, so I took it off and put him in the bed with me. Then this morning I caught him licking it, so I put the cone back on. He looks very upset. What should I do??? Any alternative? Also...I dont know if this is normal but his little Pee pee is umm sticking out. Attached is a picture of him not looking very happy. :( |
Oh the poor little guy. When Scooter had a problem with his butt and had to wear a cone I got him a wonderful cone from Mom to Hot Rod on this board. It's soft and totally wearable plus they look so cute in them. Just pm Mom to Hot Rod and she can tell you about it. Good luck to your baby. Can't help you with his pee pee situation tho. |
I am not looking to buy another one. Plus by the time it gets in he wont have to wear his cone anymore. How long do they need to wear it for? Someone please help with me this, I hate seeing my baby unhappy and suffering because of it. :( |
I went to the second hand store and picked up a newborn onesie for a baby. It cost me a dollar and was so much nicer then a cone. Good luck - I know how frustrating it is and it seems like it will last forever - but it doesn't!:) |

I used onesies. They worked great. |
He's hoping somebody will notice how pathetic he is making himself look and give in. The more you take it off, the more he will probably act like that. If he really can't eat well with it on, just take it off for meals only and closely supervise. A onesie is fine if you want to use it instead, but because it rubs on the incision it is always best to ask the your vet first. |
Zach just got neutered on Saturday and he looked like your fur baby the first day. I didn't put a cone on him. I just watched him closley and when he started licking the incision I said no and pulled his head away from it. After a few times he stopped. I keep checking the incision to make sure that everything is okay. He will get back to normal soon enough. Some dogs take a little longer. Zach was good the next day. As a matter of fact, everything the vet told me to do, Zach did the opposite. Just make sure there is no swelling or nothing oozing from the site. I would leave the cone off him and just keep checking him. This will make him much happier |

1 Attachment(s) The onsie worked for me too, but I have girls. It's a one piece t-shirt for babies. I found them at a thrift shop for $.50-$1. I cut a hole for her tail. It covers the wound, but you have to unsnap it to take them potty. Here is Tia when she had her little surgery in September. |
I used the onesies for both Bubba and Sissy. They did really well with them and as others have said I picked them up at the thrift shop. If he is really tiny you might want to try a stretchy sock or a stretchy shirt sleeve. with 4 leg holes cut in it |
Awwwww.... He Is Absolutely ADORABLE!!!! :) When I picked Riley up, last month from his neuter, my Vet told me: He can eat, drink, pee, poop, and do everything he did before with the e-collar on....and don't let him make you think he can't...... Luckily I only had to use it for a few days.......about a week after his neuter. I was using a baby onsie but he slipped out of it while i was at work and was licking once it was starting to heal and the hair was growing back. Best of luck!! :) |
WHERE can I get a onsie from?? Can I get it from the Pet store?? |
Just keep a close eye on him and if he trys to lick just keep moving his head away. after a while he will probably stop. Check the incision frequently. Onsie's work great.. |
You can get a onsie whereever they sell baby clothes. |

do you have a target, walmart, any kind of store like that. A department store... a onsie is the little one piece tshirt with snaps that you put on an infant. |
Yes....Ill go there but my dog is 3lbs...do they have anything as small as him??? |
get 0-3months and you might have to alter a bit.... its better than the cone.... some stores now carry preemie clothes maybe you will find something in that size...Good Luck and please be careful driving.... you sound upset, I am sure he will be fine... |
Ally is 3 lbs 2 oz and fits in a newborn. Of course, they are sized differently. Find a really short one. I don't think the 0-3 months will work though. If you know of a thrift shop nearby, stop by there too. They make great pajamas also. |
If they have the preemie size , you might get a better fit. Some of the Wal Marts carry them, as do the Carters Outlet stores. Another thing that may help is asking your vet about having them apply a liquid bandage over the sutures. It's quick and painless and will help protect the area if the licking is persistent. |
you can get one at the thrift store, a baby store, Kmart or Walmart. They will probaly be in a 3 pack in the regular stores and they will be back in the infant clothes section. Good luck |
I did not use a cone at all and Ben's stitches healed super quick and were never even red. He occasionally would lick but not obsessively. I think the cone should be held as a "just in case" situation. If they do over-lick, then you can torture them with it. This is unless there was a special circumstance the vet required the collar for. I have never used the cone for spays either. But I have never had an incision site that got infected or angry red either. If that happens, the dog will probably lick more. I love the idea of the soft collar Mom to Hot Rod sells. If you have one going into surgery, I think it would be a good idea to get one, and you could ask, she might be able to send one out overnight or Priority which arrives pretty quick. |
I used this for my little girl...she was so comfortable its like a little pillow. ProCollar Premium Inflatable Protective Collar at PETCO |
Sorry you little one and you are going thru this. What you want to do is keep him away from his incision site while it is open and healing. This will take a couple of days. For his size, I would recommend getting a premie onsize. You can put it on him backwards so his tail is sticking out the snap part. At his size, if you have a tube sock or a large cotton men's sock, try cutting the toe part out and slide it over him. As suggested, make sure with your vet that the material against the inicision will not be a problem. This can cause more irritation and make the site raw as well as the licking. Best of luck to you and if you change your mind on a collar, click on the second have the link in my signature and feel free to private message me. It has more uses that just for after neutering. I do offer priority shipping and overnight shipping. Hope he and you feel better quickly. Bo |
Ok. Just went and got him a premature one. Fits great!!! Phhhewww I feel better now. I felt I could do anything knowing he was so uncomfortable and upset. How do I attach a pic on here?? I wanna attach it so you all can see |
Oh great!!! I am sure you do feel alot better...and again i am sure he will be fine.. |
IF you click the "1" blog entry on the right had side you can see the pic |
First of all, he would get used to the E collar if you left it on him. But, since you are that bothered by it, call your vet and ask for the cream they use to deter licking. I believe it is bitter apple, but not sure. I just know it works! Also, if his penis stays out and does not go back in, take him to the vet! If it is only out for short times, no big deal. You definitely don't want him to lick the surgical area...he can remove the sutures and also get an infection. Good luck! :) |
