LMAO i love that episode!!! maybe we can dress the dogs up like babies!!!! hehehe. I did get away with 2 in one bag though

If it makes you feel better it's $200.00 each one way for my bird and Andy

Jemma 12-12-2010 09:01 AM

Spirit airlines. Charge is 200 round trip. Dog in soft carrier on floor under the seat. What BS. My ticket was less than that. I once asked them if they have big airfare sales and I book a ticket will my pups ticket be on sale too? NEVER!!!
Time to get someone who can get a lobby together.

Sounds like it's cheaper to buy them a seat. I'm sure he'll do well. My daughter flew to Seattle with her Cav and fell asleep. The guy in the next seat woke her up and said, "your dog just got out and is walking up and down the rows looking at people. I hope he's not vicious".

Hahahahahahahaha!

Furthermore.....if Sugar's flight is the same price as mine (sometimes MORE ) and she has to sit IN A BAG on the COLD FLOOR....shouldn't she at least get frequent flier miles??? Or a fly 5x get one flight free certificate?? Something??:rolleyes:

I suppose one consolation is that on Virgin at least, the extra fee counts towards FF files - so Thor will be earn me a free ticket if I fly with him twice.

Thanks for the tip on how cold the floor is, I hadn't realized. I will be sure to keep a blanket handy for Thor.

I generally push the "one carry on, one purse" rule to the limit, but I don't think I can do it this time. I'll be carrying a week's supply of potty pads for Thor, plus Christmas presents, plus I'm going somewhere cold, so I need more clothes for me. That's asking a lot of one piece of luggage.

That last time I flew, there was a guy with a ten lb yorkie mix. This dog was TERRIFIED. He ended up switching seats with a girl in the emergency row because she wanted to sit with her friend in my row (does that make sense?). He left his dog under the seat next to me, because you can't have a dog in an emergency row.

I felt bad for the dog, so I stupidly poked the side of the carrier to be friendly -- and she bit me, right through the carrier. And it HURT! That gave me a new respect for the power of canine jaws. Anyway, I didn't feel so friendly towards the dog after that, even though I know it wasn't her fault. We were going to move the dog to be near her owner after the flight took off, but he slept the whole way, while his poor dog was stuck with strangers.

Regarding the whole scanning thing, I'm confused. I flew recently, and went through a standard metal detector. Are they only in some cities, or was I totally oblivious or what?

I have Mike (alaskayorkie) looking into legislation to outlaw pet fees. :D;)

Free flight after TwO????

Are you bring disposable pads? May be cheaper to buy them at your destination  why pay the airline to cart pottypads that cost $12 for 30 ;)

QuickSilver 12-12-2010 10:54 AM

I'm going to a pretty remote area, so I don't think I'll have access to potty pads once I'm there.

Yes, Virgin gives you 5 points for every $ you spend, so Thor is getting me 1,000 FF points. And apparently you can get a flight on Virgin for just a few thousand FF points.

sugarmamma 12-12-2010 10:58 AM

wow. I never knew it paid so well to be a loyal Virgin.

QuickSilver 12-12-2010 11:00 AM

Ahem, that's loyal TO Virgin.... ;)

I was booking my rezzies for Christmas, and I was like, "oh, I'll go Virgin even though the ticket is slightly more expensive because I like Virgin", completely forgetting about pet fees. Then after waiting on hold for almost AN HOUR, they told me that it is $100 each way! So the ticket is not "slightly" more expensive, it is highway robbery.

Also, I just realized that I will have to check bags for the first time in maybe ten years because I will have Thor as a carry on, and I think Virgin charges an ungodly amount for checked bags also.

I am almost thinking about canceling the ticket and booking somewhere else... but I don't think I can bear to wait on the phone with Virgin to cancel and then another airline to book Thor.

Anyway, lesson learned, I guess. This is the first time I'm flying with Thor, so please wish us both luck. :)

I don't get it my brother lives in CT he was flying all the way to home to CA-let me just state he is CHEAP!-he was going to purchase two tickets one for himself and one for his daughter (6) and have his son (2) ride on his lap the entire way...so if my nephew was free-a 30 lbs child why the extortion fee for what at most 10 lbs of dogs? I don't get it I mean if you want to buy a separate seat for your dogs to ensure their comfort or your own (making sure you don't have to literally rub elbows or more with the person next to ya) let alone if you can afford another air fair just for your dogs more power to you-but seriously if kids can ride on your lap free why not dogs? Maybe it's just via some airlines, and maybe that's changed I don't know but I still don't understand the logic of it...

Because they do not check for a ticket anyhow. Let me know if you find that they do not check. My carrier is really small and looks like a carryon.

I would be very careful about that. They could well consider it theft of services and you could have security and authorities waiting at the next airport. They re allowed to rip us off, but unfortunately we are not allowed to do the same to them.

I know Delta will not allow you to buy a seat for a pet. They said I could buy another ticket BUT the dog could not sit in the seat. It must be under the seat in front of me. No logic to it -- just the rule.

My husband and I were just checking flights from Palm Springs to Seattle for $168 including tax roundtrip per seat. We wanted to buy our Yorkie, Brandy, a seat, but they said no, we had to pay the $200, put her in a carrier under our seat and it counted as a carry on. The airlines have the craziest pricing and policies of any industry.

$168 a seat...seriously! $200 pet carry on fee...seriously! This whole thread is hurting my brain! I thought my class on legal linguistics was a mind blower...

I agree...this is terrible.
Here is another twist. I checked prices to fly with Copper a couple of months ago, it would have required us changing airlines on the way to the destination...so, if you have a layover and have to change airlines, the way I understand it is that you have to pay the new airline $100 also. Instead of it costing $100 one way, it would be $200 and $400 for the round trip. My ticket wasn't even going to be that much. I decided the trip wasn't worth it.
