Another reminder for small yorkies I was talking to a friend this evening and her breeder/friend said that she got a phone call yesterday afternoon. She had sold this family a yorkie about a year back. Anyway, the yorkie is 3 1/2 - 4lbs and jumped off the bed and broke her leg. The lady told her that she didn't realize that owning such a small dog was that much work. Just be careful not only with tinies but any yorkie for that matter. |

Thank you for the warning and reminder. Gucci sometimes jumps down and I suffer. I have her pillow bed next to our bed and she usually jumps on it. I just wish she wouldnt jumo at all. I guess we have being lucky. My hubby is making her some steps ASAP. |
awww poor baby :( thanks for the info ;) |
Thanks for the reminder. Trixie is 5,5 lbs and a jumper. She jumps up and down the bed, the couch, even a little fence wall on our property. It's hard to keep her from doing it. But this is definately a good thing to keep in mind! |
lexi jumped over the gate this morning to get the treat i threw. im in trouble now...i gonna go home and she will be in the living room and i think i'll have a heartattack.. |
thank you for that reminder....Dollar sleeps with ud in the bed and I get so worried that i dont sleep b/c I am so afraid that he will jump off which he has done before! |
Awww.. poor baby! I know Taylah worries me by just jumping off our low couch. :( |
I am so sorry about this little baby. This makes me scared, my bed is 29 and a half inches off the ground...I need to invest in some dog step's. |
Oh poor baby, I hope she's OK. We all love and care so much for them, we have to remember just how small & delicate they really are. Thanks for the reminder! |
That always worries me too, but what can I do? Gus is a tiny guy and a jumper. We have a foot rest stools by all of our couches but he doesn't use them. I've seen him jump as high as my mid waist when he gets excited. There is no stopping this 2.9er. |
Scotch broke his leg!! Scotch and I were playing last night and I dropped him (of course, by accident) and he broke his leg!! He didn't even cry or anything I didn't know anything was wrong until I saw his leg flailing around when he was walking. :( It was the worst sight ever. Needless to say, I took him to the emergency vet last night and that cost me $240!! Then they said he might need surgery, costing another $1000! I know this has definitely taught me to get pet insurance for him! And, Scotch is not a tiny yorkie, he is 8.8lbs, as of last night, so remember to be careful with ALL of your babies! |

Thank you for the reminder Kimberly - you're right - there have been ALOT of broken legs lately - and worse...like what happened to Jennifer (JCarlson2004)with her angel Katie. Our yorkies are fearless and can be impulsive and especially the smaller sized ones...their bones can snap easily and it's up to us to always protect them from hurting themselves. When mine were babies - I have a high bed so I turned a Laundry Basket Upside Down next to the bed - the put a towel on it & tucked into the base of the laundry basket so the towel wouldn't slide - Easy and CHEAP way to prevent bad jumps.... I taught both girls how to step down to the basket from the bed and it worked perfectly - never had one fall or bad jump.... |
Kimberly, I have heard stories similar to yours so much. Some folks just dont realize how fragile those tiny little bones are. I have a small boy now...he's 8 months and weighs 4 lb, really short little legs and small bone structure. I have to put a stack of pillows with a quilt folded on top beside the bed just so he doesnt hurt himself when jumping up or down. I would like to get a set of those little steps i've seen in magazines for him to walk up to the bed or couch. My husband let him jump right off the couch one night and I about had a heart attack. He was ok, luckily. |
Sorry to hear about his leg , I hope all goes well.. keep us posted Gina |
So many sad stories about Yorkies lately. Getting dropped, falling off of high places, getting stepped on and having heavy things fall on them. It's very depressing. Yes, tiny ones are more at risk but Yorkies are all small and fragile. It just breaks my heart that so many of our posters have to suffer such loss and sadness. Hope this doesn't sound cold but I feel like at least a broken leg can be fixed. It would break my heart if something like that happened to Shelby but it wouldn't compare to the loss of HER. Reading about Katie (JCarlson) just put me right over the edge. I am so sad today I can hardly stand it. Sorry if I sound as horrrible as I feel. |
My Lacey weighed 4 pounds. And she loved to jump up on our couch to take her naps. Well, from all the jumping, she sprained her paw. We had to take her to the vet and she had to have an ace bandage around her paw for awhile. Poor thing. |
My baby has jumped off of my king size bed and she didn't break anything and she is under 2lbs!!! |
You people that have jumpers, I would train them and highly encourage them NOT TO JUMP! My husband made a ramp for our bed, and then for the living room couches, he thought of the brillant idea of taking a car ramp (he had about 6 of them outside...we live in the country and he's always working on cars) and putting a non-skid rug on them. They work great! Better than the ramp he made, even. I just used bathroom rugs. And you can get the ramps at any auto part store or a Walmart....they only cost about $30 for a pair! But, please, don't let your babies jump. You can train them not to. |
My Jasmine is a jumper. I try to watch her from jumping off the couch but I noticed she jumps off our bed sometimes. I have a bench at the bottom of our bed and she usually goes by way of the bench. My bed is high and the bench is upholstered and lower than the bed so it is a good way for her to get down. However, our 20 yr old granddaughter is staying with us and going to college. She is also working at Amazon.com in the evenings from 5:00pm to 1:30AM. She gets home about 2:00 in the morning and Jasmine always hears her come in the door. Jasmine gets so exited that she has jumped off our bed instead of going down the way she should. She is 4 months and about 2 or 21/2 lbs. I'm just guessing her weight but she is very tiny with a very tiny bone structure. I don't want to make her stop sleeping with us, but I don't want her break something. It's almost as bad as having a baby in the house again. |
 My little Muffin jumped off of my bed in the middle of the night twice last week. We have a really high bed so my husband built stairs that go all the way to top of the mattress (6 stairs with short risers). We worked with Muffin for about 20 minutes getting her used to going up and down the stairs. Now she's an old pro! (Of course I think she the SMARTEST 5 month-old Yorkie around!) Last night I guess she had to go poopies and she climbed down the stairs to do her business on the pee pad and then climbed back up when she was done. It's amazing how smart and fearless these dogs are. Now my Maltese, Biscuit on the other hand who is big enough (9 lbs.) to jump off the bed, is terrified to do so and is afraid of the stairs - go figure!! |
Please someone tell my husband this!!!!!!!!!!!He thinks that I am a wimp when it comes to this. He plays with my little guy (4lbs) like he's this big LAB I always remind him that he's small and fragile. He says that makes them more strong. And my miko is a little jumper. Right now, we are in the process of moving, and we have boxes everywhere and he's jumping off of the boxes!!! |

It's exhausting. Doing the best I can to keep things safe and allow for soft landings. At the same time I don't want her to become a couch potatoe. These dogs compete in agility training and are very coordinated. We don't have to limit all of their fun. Running, jumping and playing is part of being a dog. |
I dont know how those of you with the real little ones do it. I have a 5lb girl and I worry about her breaking a leg or something cause shes so little. |

We go through this EVERY night with 2 adult sons living at home. Shelby has to greet the late arrivals and won't go back to sleep until she does her job. I taught her to use pillow stairs (stack a bunch of pillows by the bed) and it works out great. She gets on and off the bed that way and can use the wee pad during the night if she needs to. she has been sleeping with us since she was around 4 months old. It helps if you aren't too deep of a sleeper. |
My bed is extremely high. I have a pillow staircase at the foot of the bed also in case the want to get down at night. They also use this to climb up. I worry about them jumping all the time and cringe everytime they do it. Mac is such a wild man and thinks he can jump all a tall building in a single bound. |

legs I have had 3 break their legs over the years..one was 3 pounds and I dropped him, my fault!!! The other two were 6 pounders and they jumped from a high place and broke their own legs! LOL |
