Traveling with your Yorkies It has taken me a while to to post this because everytime I think of the incident it makes me very emotional. I am posting in hopes making others aware of the importance of using restaints, ie (crates, travel seats) when traveling with your babies. I was in formed by one of my puppy parents, they were traveling home after the Thanksgiving holiday when they were involved in a terrible car crash. The vehicle rolled several times before coming to rest. In the vehicle was Mom, Dad, young daughter and a 6 month old yorkie boy. The young daughter was in her car seat and by the Grace of God came out of the accident with a couple of scratches. The father had minor injuries. The mothers legs somehow during the rolling of the vehicle went outside her window and was pinned under the vehicle when it came to rest. The mother is still healing. Her legs were spared but she will have to go through months of physical therapy. The puppy, my Desi, died in the crash... |
What a sad, terrible story! I'm so sorry for the loss of the sweet little puppy. I was involved in a bad car accident a few months ago where my car was totaled with Jackson in the car with me. I was so thankful he was okay as it could have been a lot worse. He sits in a Snoozer carseat now. |
I am so very sorry to hear this- I know you must be devastated! Car safety is really so important for pets and something that is overlooked by so many people. It is also important to have a carry bag, crate, or at least leashes close by and easily viewed by emergency crew and also a card of some kind indicating an emergency contact for your pets- this way if you are not conscious, they have someone to contact who would come and get your pets for you- or at the very least the number of your vet so they would at least be boarded somewhere you trust and not taken to a shelter to be held. |
How devastating!!!! This is definitely an eye opener and my thoughts and prayers go out to their family :( Thank you for sharing. |
Rest in Peace Desi. :( Thank you for the reminder about travel safety and pets. |
oh my, what a very sad story :( |
Another thread worth checking out What kind of Car seat? Please check out this thread. (I hope you don't mind) Thanks everyone for your advice and replies. We all think it won't be us. |
this is so sad my 16 year old sister had to do a report on a "safety issue" and she choose pets in cars for the second part of the report she had to find a solution so she made a car seat out of a plastic milk crate for gatsby (and has made one for every family dog but our grandmothers sheltie and our aunts 98 pound american bulldog. it is cheap sometimes free if you have some stuff laying around and our vet said he likes it better then some commercial car-seats on the market because it is hard and has multiple ways to safely put the seat belt through if anyone is interested in how to do this let me know and ill send you step by step instructions on how to make one. |
I'm so sorry about Desi. |
Very sorry about Desi. You bring up such a great point on car safety for our dogs and cats. For travelling in the car, I like the solid type of crate, not the wire crate for Yorkies. One of the things you can do, is make up a placard that is permanently attached to your car crates, which list, the Vet name and number, any medications your Yorkie is on, emergency contact number if different from the vet's, a copy of your pet insurance plan if you have one. Particularly note if your dog is allergic to anything. Your dog's name and age. For our large breed dogs, we have another note; DO NOT OPEN CRATE! We also show their weight and height on crate; as well as their |OUT" or STOP command. Their collars are attached to their crates as well as leashes. Also give a thought to when you are travelling with both large and small crates, how you will organize your space to provide safety for all passengers. Also food for some thought many in fact the majority of accidents occur within a 20 mile radius of your home. A quick to the store with your favourite pooch uncrated can end in disaster. |
My heart breaks for you. My Yorkie has ridden just behind my neck between the head rest and my head since he was small. He chose the place. Maybe not such a good idea. I have bought two seats for him when he is strapped in, and he has managed to get out of both and get up in "his chosen place." Maybe I should try again. I know you are devestated, I know I would be. |
I'm so sorry to hear about Desi. One question.....is it okay to put your baby in the front seat equipped with airbag? Mocha sits on a levitated car seat in the front. Recently someone told me to move him to the back because of airbag. Is this true? He would surly throw a fit if I move him to the back. But if it's for his safety.... |

I too, have been lax in this regard... Holding my babies while my husband drives or even allowing them to lay on my lap as I drive. Replaying in my minds eye, what Desi's last moments must have been like is horrifying. It has made me rethink traveling with my babies. My babies throw a fit when I put them on carriers to travel and I always give in...not anymore. Gemy... Great suggestions and ideas. I have a notebook that I carry when we go on extended trips. It has all my babies infomation and photos. I will be making a second copy to keep in my car so I will always have their information with me. |

How terrible!! I recall this being mentioned when it happen, I've been wanting to get a car seat ever since. More so now that we have two and thought it would be way to difficult to drive with teh extra legs moving around. RIP SWEET DESI |

I thought Levi would pitch the biggest fit when I moved him to the backseat, but he really did take it like a champ. He cried/whined a little the first day, but now he's perfectly fine and I like knowing how much safer he is with his seat in the backseat. |
Today I ordered a Sherpa Original medium size airline approved carrier for Jack for our trip to Texas in January. I search all day for one with lots of ventalation right size and one I could afford. I found the best deal at Amazon and free shipping, so I may start using it in the car too with the seat belt. |
I am so sorry. I worry about accidents every time they are in the car with me. I'll have to get some type of seat asap. Has anyone tried the console car seats, they can be right next to you. |
the airbag in my car turns off by a sensor because he is under 60 lbs |
Rest in Peace Baby Desi. I hope the mother makes a full recovery. |
I'm so sorry to hear about Desi. He was an adorable little fellow and so sweet. Thank God everyone else survived. We will definitely be getting Mia a car seat. |
I'm so sorry about Desi. Stories like that just break my heart. I use hard plastic crates that have a spot that the seat belt goes through. When both are with me they are in the back but usually if it's just one of them I put them in the front. I think the airbag turns off automatically because of their weight but I'm not positive. Would a hard crate hold up to an airbag? They've never ridden in the car outside their crate. We started when they were puppies and it still amazes me how well they travel. |
Sorry to hear about Desi. Quote:

Oh my. I am so sorry for your loss. That is a great point though. I never have thought about that. I take Rocky almost everywhere around town with me. I've never even thought about having wreck with the little guy. -.- I'm going to have to look into these safety belts for dogs. :animal-pa |
Just seeing this tonight -- I am so sorry for your little Desi! What a difficult loss. |
Sorry to hear about Desi... This a a great "wake up" reminder and wonderful post! We have the medium snoozer which 2 of my Yorkies will fit into. We traveled over the holiday and because I have yet to get another, we used an oversized crate for all three of them. It was seatbelted in and wedged in the back seat (we put it in the long way -front to back-). It was a pretty safe way for them to travel, but I plan on getting another snoozer very soon.... maybe I will order another one today! |
I am so sorry for your loss. Rest in peace Desi. Thank you for giving us all a wake up call for car safety with our fur babies. |

My girls are always in a car seat. I have both the Snoozer console and a Snoozer My Buddy. Sissy goes with me most often and the console is the place she likes to be the best!!! I love the Snoozers.... So sorry to hear about your little Desi. |
