New puppy! He is deaf...any tips? Hello! I haven't posted in so long...I have Sophie, she is 6 yrs. old now ( I can't believe it!) and I just got a new puppy today. His name is Peyton and of course I think he is just the cutest little thing ever. I am looking for any advice on deaf dogs. Just want to make everything as great as possible for my new little guy! Thanks! :animal36 |
I don't have any advice but how great of you to take a special needs dog. One of our labs is blind (from diabetes) and I know how much extra work and committment it takes to have a pet like this. You will be amazed how much his other senses compensate for his loss. Good luck, he's so fortunate to have a home where someone is willing to put in the extra effort.:) |
I don't have any advice about deaf dogs, but I just wanted to say congratulations and thank you for adopting such a special dog :) You are a great person! |
Im not sure what you are looking for but hear is a site that has hand signals for traing a deaf dog DDEAF Training Hand Signs |
Well congratulations on your new little baby!! You must be so excited. How is your big guy handling the new baby? I have heard that deaf dogs really do well with the sign language. Pictures please :D |
I recommend the hand signals for tricks...no expierence with deaf doggies but I will say, Rizzo actually responds better to my hand signals than my vocal commands when doing the sit, stay, down, up, beg commands :D Smart little buggers :D |
congrats on the puppy! we do need pics!! :D generally, deaf dogs (same with most kids) will copy others even more so than a hearing puppy. try incorperating the signs with vocal commands to your older dog and with any luck Peyton will copy her actions in responce to what he Sees as a hand signal... it may take him a little longer to learn the commands, but with a little extra patience you will see he will be just as eager to please and won't even realise hes any different! |
I know in the great dane rescue, they use vibrating collars as well. I don't know if that would be an option. Congrats on the new baby!! |
My Chachi learned all his tricks with hand signals |
Thank you for the nice comments and awesome tips. I will get pics here asap. Sophia is not a fan yet. :( She is keeping her distance and looks like she is hoping it is just a visit! I'm sure she will come around! |
My boyfriend's sister and her husband have a large dog who was born completely deaf. They have done some training with him and he responds perfectly to hand signals! If he is not looking, they will stomp the ground so he feels the vibration and he'll look and then get the hand signal. You can try training him with treats. Good luck! :) |
You've gotten great advice!!! I am dying to see your new baby!!! Pictures please???? CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! |
I'll try to get pics loaded soon, I promise! :aimeeyork I have another concern....I'm going to put it in another thread though. Thanks! |
