I am soooo glad I am not the only one who has issue with the "Is she a teacup" question or issue!!!
When I decided to get a little girl I was thinking of another Shih tuz, it was my vet who talked me into a Yorkie. He explained about all the scam and what to be aware of and refered two breeders. He recommended to not get what he called the "tiny tiny" ones because they are not as healthy and I would have problems keeping them safe and healthy. I got Remy -- her mother was 5 lbs and dad about the same.
Remy is 3.5 -- long legs and the most beautiful baby in the world (to me). She is 11 months and she has my husband, her two shih tuz brothers and me wrapped around her paw. The vet said she would be too small to breed so I had her altered. I don't want to chance her getting sick or hurt...
When we go out people will tell me about teacups.. I always say "oh... have you had a lot of health problems?" or "that's funny.. the breed standards state 3 lbs is as small as they should be" Your right, they often get mad. I have seen some yorkies that are twice as heavy as Remy (or more) and they are beautiful and happy and healthy and it makes my heart happy!!!!!

Novel idea to put an end to the tiny teacup conversations or at least put it out there this is not the desirable size for a Yorkie- I always suggest people just get a hamster-I'm sure I make people a lot more irritated, might try your method next time I hear someone talking about a "micro" "micro-mini" "teacup" or any of the other nonsense terms for severely undersized dogs.

It's VERY sad. People just want smaller and smaller.

I was at the dog park the other day and a woman told me she got a "purebred Morkie" and then went on to tell me how unhappy she was with her and her size, because she was supposed to be "tiny" and black/tan and she looks ALL white and almost exactly like a Maltese. Yep, that's what happens when you get a mixed breed, there is NO guarantee. I just didn't really say much and asked much she weighed and she told me 7lbs... LOL. I was like, you want smaller? Mind you, she was a tiny 7lbs, like she was really skinny and stuff. Ugh!

I agree. Many people just assume small dogs are teacups. Pixie is my littlest and if people ask if she is a teacup I just say no she's just small. Pixie was sold by her breeder because she was too small, she wasn't breeding for that small.

I had someone "tell me", not ask me, that mine was a teacup. I said No she is just a regular yorkie. She argued that no it was definitely a teacup. her neighbor had a purebred registered teacup and looked exactly like mine.

OK who can argue with that logic.

My yorkie is very tiny, we did not know that she would be this small. Her dad was 5 pounds and her mom was 6 pounds. People ask me all the time if she is a "teacup" and I just say she is small because there is no such thing as a teacup. Some look at you like you are nuts and others seem surprized to hear that. She is our first yorkie and we love her so much I do worry because she is so small. when we got her she was very similar in size to her sister and two brothers. I chose her because she was jumpin up like pick me, pick me and when I picked her up she was licking me and acting so excited so I got her because I like to think she picked me:) I do wish she was bigger but I love her just the same:) She is a wonderful little dog and everyone that meets her loves her to.

My Zoe is 2.8 lbs at almost # years old, i love to death, But I didn't go out searching for a small yorkie when I got her, It just sort of ended up that she stayed small. But I do worry about her health..

Ugh some people! I have a Schnorkie whom was abandoned at a pound in the dead of night in a bag with another designer dog breed, both were not the desired result of crossing. This specific pound-just outside San Francisco gets a TON of "designer dogs" dumped there. HOW SICK ARE SOME PEOPLE? Well at least they dumped him instead of worse ya know? Anywho my Schnorkie is the absolute worse possible crossing result-and I love him for it! He's 21 pounds and almost 17" tall! That's right folks he's half Yorkie half Miniature Schnauzer and the result of an F1 crossing-(a first generation crossing is called an F1)-often the genetics freak out when two lines have been purebred for so long and are suddenly crossed you get things like a mutant gene coming out or in Scoober's case the lack of the growth inhibiting gene presenting itself...he literally kept on growing, instead of being in between the size of a Yorkie and Mini Schnauzer. In color he's deemed a black and silver but has brown and white throughout and wiring like a schnauzer's outer coat, with a super thin under coat (schnauzers have a double coat). His head is small like a Yorkie and he has that Yorkie long style body with sticky legs only he lacks the long hair to hide his twigginess-he has the body of a deer! I THINK HE'S PERFECT! When you cross breeds you get funky results...the unfortunate reality of hybrids or now commonly termed "designer breeds" is the sheer amount of throw away dogs because they didn't come out as they were intended to-people like this woman are the reason wonderful blessing like my Scoobers are tossed aside...and we now have dogs termed teacup-micro mini-worse yet a market demanding dogs this size.

I usually take it as just being ignorant, it doesn't take long to find out otherwise. I don't think I remember anyone asking if he is a "teacup" but if they do I'll just let them know thats not a classification that applys to Yorkies...not that I think I'll ever get that with his long, skinny legs :D

My Bailey is 2.5lbs. I did not go out looking for a tiny one either she just stayed small to. I love her and worry about her . She had to have surgery on her back left knee in September for a grade 4 Luxating Patella. She is doing great though. They did a lot of pretesting on her just to be safe since she was going under anestetic. They tested her for Liver Shunt since she was so small but that all came back good. I have had to keep her down for a long time (8 weeks) she goes for a followup tomorrow hope I get a good report:) Have fun with your little ZOE:) and Happy Thanksgiving to you:aimeeyork

I had a lady in my puppy class just tell me the other day that her sister just recently got a Yorkie also and it was a "tea cup". I almost gave her the third degree but bit my tongue since it was her sister and not her. I just informed her that smaller Yorkie's have serious health problems and for her sister to watch for that. It is so irritating.

Got to admit I do love teacups though. I have a nice collection of them in my china cabinet:D

snoopymom 11-22-2010 09:54 AM

I would say that Yorkies are considered to be in the toy breed. Still a word for small, but acurate.
