I really need opinions,BIG, HUGE TIME..PLEASE Hi. I am devastated. Totally! I arrived here in the US just under a month ago. And my little baby came with me obviously from England. He is 8 and a bit by the way, I've known him since 6 weeks and he been with me since 8.5 weeks. Anyway my scedule was to stay here in the US through until next April. We have both settled perfectly in every way and are very happy. However I need to have an operation which simply cannot wait. And it is a long recovery. I am european and do not have obviously US Health Care and my insurance will cover only for the surgery to take place back in Europe and not in America. Anyway my little baby will not be allowed back in to England until January 20th which would be 6 months from the date of his positive blood tests for his passport. I need to leave almost immediately. I cannot bear him in quaratine despite that we will both be in the same town. We are talking more than 2 whole months in quarrantine. I am questioning now my love for him. I adore him! Or do I? Why am I here writing this? I think I love him so much and that's why I don't want him to face quarantine. He will hate it I know. Om my God no way, he is so outgoing, free, funloving and to have to put him through that would destroy me. Do you all know what I mean? I adore this creature!!! I am thinking to give him here in to States to a good family rather that put him through that? I feel 'sick' even writing this, thinking about such a possibility, I don't even know if I could do even if it was the right thing to do, so bad it hurts. It has come to the point where I may need to travel very soon (although I am waiting for some final test results later that if passed, my dr here in the US may let me stay through until next year and my intended return), however it is unlikely. What do I do? I don't want to lose my baby nor do I want to put him through ny suffering because of my circumstances albeit medical ones. I don't have family or friends to the degree where I could leave him here by the way. And my mum was due to come in for thanxgiving. It is all upside down but my no 1 concern is for the love of my life....HELP!!!! |
First, I am very sorry for your predicament. I know exactly how you feel as we have been given orders to England with only 3 months notice...not nearly enough time to get done what the UK wants before bringing my babies in. I have all the same thoughts as you going through my head and go back and forth daily on it. Should I just get done what I can and bring them and have them go into quarantine, how will they do in Quarantine, they will need to be there so long, should I leave them with family here and hope they can get over there after the time is up or should I find them a nice home together so at least they can be together even if I have to lose them??????? I honestly am leaning toward taking them and dealing. Hopefully they will be close and I can visit as often as possible, maybe every day. Still not sure that is an option we can afford. I think this whole thing sucks! I wish I could offer you more than my sympathies but I am hoping someone, anyone can come along with any real words of wisdom on your thread or mine. |
I dont know the whole procedure but could you find someone to foster your baby here and get all the health concerns taken care of and then have your baby flown to you when everything is taken care of? |
Will you be coming back to the US after your surgery? If so, how long will you be gone? I'm thinking maybe someone could take care of him for you while you are in the UK for surgery or even until Jan 20th, when he can fly back to the UK and not have to be quarantined. I hope you can figure something out and don't have to rehome him. Will be thinking of you. |
Hi, the UK have very very strict rules, which seem to be a little over the top and some what outdated. DEFRA.co.uk have all the rules for bringing a dog into the UK and yes it's sooooo frustrating, but you said your dog is a UK dog, did you not have a passport for him on leaving the UK? He would of had his microchip and rabies innoculations before leaving, and I am confused, but did you not wait the 6 months period and blood test before going out to the states? There is no way round it, I am sorry..UK control will not let even a british born dog back into the UK without the 6 month waiting clause, and if the rabies innoculations have lapsed whilst out of the country for what ever reason, they will expect the 6 month wait all over again. I feel so upset for you really, can you not find an organisation who would take your boy for the three months? and then ship him out to you? If I lived in the states I would have him for you really, I did it for friends, when I lived in Spain, and I know some UK people living in Spain took in peoples dogs, while they were waiting for the 6 month clearance, it was not cheap though, some charged up to £1,000 and that didn't include shipping costs. I truly hope a kind samaritan comes tio your rescue. |
What a truly sad situation. I am so very sorry for your medical condition and will pray for a successful outcome on your upcoming surgery. I would suggest trying to find a foster to keep your beloved while you are in the UK having your surgery and during your recovery period. Then, if you are able to come back to the states, your little one will be overjoyed with a USA reunion. If you aren't able to return, then have him shipped (via personal courier) after the quanantine date is over. Good luck to you both. |
I don't know if they take long-term boarders, but if you are in a position to pay for boarding until your dog can be shipped back to you, I can highly recommend the folks at Yorkie Camp. They're located just 40 miles east of L.A. so you would be able to visit them and see their wonderful facilities. Their website is YORKIE CAMP/SPA . |

Defra, UK - Wildlife and pets - Pets and horses - Travelling with pets I believe there are not that many quarentine sites in the UK : London/Manchester? so you may not be that near to them. |
I'm not too sure but I don't think she would have had to do all of that to bring her baby here to the states so I am guessing that is why she has to do it to get now to get back in. |

Are you thinking that IF I can't work that out that they are better off in a new home instead of quarantine if that becomes the only option? We will be about an hour and half north or London so no I guess we couldn't be that close. :( Bertipup, I do think that would be best, if you can find someone to take them and ship them over later. If you don't have anyone here, you are in a great place where people will really give it their all to help out if they can. |

Pop another thread on here and ask members if they know of a vet in your area who can supply your ISO microchip sooner......they have them in the states, I know it............if I can help here in the UK with calls to DEFRA etc, please let me know. |
i am so sorry for your situation. I hope u get well and that u find a solution for your baby. u might could check into a yorkie rescue. They might take him on a temporary basis. I would get him micro chipped if i could so that it might help u keep track of him. Also if he did get placed somewhere temporarily id make sure i had details written up and signed on paper so that the details where lined out and so u can get him back. all the best for you. |
WOW!! I can't even imagine what you are going through... My heart goes out to you both... if lived closer I would take your babies and keep them for how long you needed me too...But i'm in Michigan... Can you find someone that will keep them and take care of them till you get back? please keep us posted.. |
I am so sorry to hear about both of your situations. I hope I do not ever have to go through something like that. I have 6. I rescue and foster small breed dogs, most are yorkies. I would be more than happy to help you both out in fostering your little ones. I live on the East Coast so it is a bit far from California. But if it helps you to be able to not rehome your babies than that might be much better for both of your families. If you are interested please pm me and we can talk further. Good Luck. |
Thank you all so so much for your replies, comments and possible suggestions. In answer to some of your questions, YES he did get his passport before we left the UK. We left just under a month ago and he has had his passport since the blood test came back in the middle of July. And yes UK is the only country in the whole world that still requires the 6 month rabbies injection to pass its course even though the blood test passed as well. He is microchipped and is completely up to date with everything. I am still waiting on my Drs decision. BTW my operation is not life threatening at all but does need to be done fullstop! Quarrantine is out of the ? I think. Truly he will hate it; I beleive they crate them up literally 23 hours a day. It just food potty and crate and very very little, if any, playtime. I found a hotel (dog hotel) a beautiful one near to me. First major problem is that they charge $55 a night. But they get their own little room, it is big new and clean there are three indoor play areas, staff, other dogs etc. I am thinking to approach them and tell them my situation. Maybe for a lnogterm stay of 2-3 months there would be a fair discount in the rate. I haven't passed by yet to see the place in the reality but it looks clean safe and just what the doctor ordered (as the saying goes) but if it remains at $55 per night it is a no no. I am still working on all options and keeping my fingers crossed that my Dr will allow me to stay on. I would have had the operation here and be done with all this mental chaos...but the cost of this operation in the States is astronomical; even as a 'cash patient' it is way over the top...we don't need to go there. One thing I know for sure is that there is NO WAY I am giving up Bertie, absolutely NO WAY in a million years. I have to be repsonsible as a 'parent' to him and not abandon him just because. There is a solution I know, just I have to keep on searching to find a reasonably priced solution that's all. I will also post up a notice in my local grocry store here and see the response...you never know. Thank you all so so much for your kind support. It was and is worth so much to me. Kind of gives you strength and motivation knowing that others are on your side and know and feel what it is like. Thank you once again! |
Im sorry for your situation :( Have you looked into local rescues? I know the rescue near me does boarding for dogs and cats when their owners go on holiday... maybe they have something similar? |
My question is, do you know anyone in Europe that would be willing to care for your pet while you are in the UK (that is, if you can't find someone in the US to care for him)? What about France? It is quite close. I am going through a similar situation myself and really feel for you. I am planning on taking both of my dogs to Sweden with my DH and I when we move. Sweden has a 120 day waiting period after the rabies injection (and after the special microchip) and then you can only send the blood sample to be tested for FAVN to Kansas State University. We have done that, but there is a five week waiting period and we still don't know the results but have to book our tickets soon! Very stressful and sad. Good news - in January 2012 there will be no more requirement for FAVN testing at least so that will be a huge relief for many travellers. Too bad it isn't for January 2011 as it would help us all out on here! My back-up plan if the dogs don't pass their tests: move to Denmark. No rabies antibodies testing there. Leaving them in Canada is a no-go as all my family live in "pet free" condos/apartments. Plus, they love them lots but nobody could love my doggies like I do! Good luck, let me know if I can help in any way, shape or form. I really feel for you - the rules are confusing and excessive. |
Silly question because I don't know how your health system works -- but are you eligible for medical care in Canada? |
Not sure if you meant this for me or the OP but I will try to answer. :) If you are not a permanent resident of Canada you have to pay for healthcare here too. Unless you are visiting and have health insurance, but surgery sounds like it should be scheduled and they may deny that being covered by traveller's insurance. Good point though - the surgery may be less expensive here in Canada than in the US however, and the dog could travel here with just a valid Rabies certificate from the US and no fuss! |
Something doesn't seem right here I really don't want to be rude but this seems so not right...as long as your animal has the required shots there is no quarantine regulations anymore (only if you don't have adequate shot records or your animal appears visibly ill)...anyone else know people who jet set with their animals to multiple countries at a time...also the United States and Japan are the only countries who impose quarantine regulations anymore...something is just not right here...Seriously how else do ppl like Paris Hilton take their dog to France to go sopping one day, decide in France to jump over to Italy and perhaps pit stop in Spain before flying back to New York...their dogs have their shots and clearance and thus aren't stopped...so I don't see why you wouldn't be going home for your surgery where you have family/friends to aid in your recovery and doggy sit..National Health Care of England has contracting Dr.s in America...my husband is from Hallsowen and when he moved here to California he needed some work done...its a task to find a Dr here and get the approval so he just decided to fly back to England for his work... |
If you do look into finding someone to take care of your baby until he can be sent to you, or you return to the US, I am not too far from you and I would love to help you two out in any way I can. I would be willing to babysit, foster, or help you arrange shipping him. You can PM me if you want to get my number or meet up with the babies. I just feel the panic and worry in your post, and I hope I can help somehow. It would break my heart to be in your position. |

Once a dog has had their rabbies and they have passed the six months, it's plain sailing really, as long as the rabbies innocs are kept up, some innocs last two years, some only 12 months depends on the type the vet gives. Basically the UK authorities have to be able to recognise the innocs given are officially recognised from Country to Country, and they are strict on the correct paperwork also. It may be best to find a vet who has done this before for the UK, or a carrier agent. There are only two or three airports in the UK who allow in-flights from America. I believe the airlines are: British airways/Delta: here the link for outgoing airports and incoming into UK: Manchester/Heathrow/Gatwick: http://www.defra.gov.uk/wildlife-pet.../noneu-air.pdf (This link below is for the vet) Defra, UK - Animal health and welfare - Pet Travel Scheme - Procedures for Vets http://www.defra.gov.uk/wildlife-pet...factsheet2.pdf (The link above, explains the make/types of innocs that can be used) |
