The rule on ALL airlines is that the dog must stay in their carrier the entire time... there are plenty of flight attendants who allow the rule to be broken- but you must be ready and prepared to keep them in the bag the whole time. I have never tried to take mine out- I feel like they are better off in the bag anyway- they are safer there- I have experienced rough flights and would be worried about a pet free during those conditions. Armani was in his carrier for about 10 hours once and he was just fine. I fly JetBlue and it is 100 each way- but I also get 300 extra points for the pets ticket. |
I flew Southwest 4 times with Kasha over the summer. It's super easy. $75 each way. They do have to stay in the carriers under the seat (although we did sit with her in our laps after she escaped) though I've had 1 flight attendant who let us keep the carrier in our lap. Jetblue was 125 I think. It's very easy and most people in the industry are very nice to you during the travel time. Just make sure to book asap because FAA regulations prohibit more than 4 dogs per aircraft and since its the holidays I'd guess there would be more than a few people wanting to bring their babies home. If you've already booked, make sure you call up a few days ahead of time to make sure the pup's reservation is good to go. Also, check to make sure they don't need health certificate( I just brought her medical records) |
I just checked recently because I wanted to take Annie with me on an overnight trip. I was flying Delta there ($125) and United AirWays ($100) on the way back -- and th told me her carrier would count as my carry-on and I would have to pay if I wanted to check my bag ($50 each way)!! Then the first hotel I called had a $50 pet deposit! So, it was going to cost me $375 just to take my little 2 pound dog with me on an overnight trip. She went to stay with my mom, needless to say! I thought it was ridiculous! I would not mind paying a nominal cost even though she would be taking up the same as any carry-on and weigh less than most, but that amounted to highway robbery! (Airway robbery?) I was told they could have no more than 2 pets on the plane. I thought that was odd too. Wonder why? Maybe the air would get too much pet dander for allergy sufferers? |

I'll add my endorsement for southwest also. When I picked up Gulliver and brought him back to Vegas from Orlando, we flew Southwest and loved it. He did have to stay under the seat during takeoff and landing, the flight attendants were pretty strict about that, but once we were in the air I put the tray table down and sat his carrier on it and unzipped it so I could stick my hand in. The attendants didn't act like they cared what he did during the flight so long as he didn't disturb the other passengers. |
We just booked tickets with Air Tran from Florida to Chicago for Christmas... To take Walt it was 70$ both ways... It was the cheapest my husband could find! Now we have the tickets and are hoping he'll fly well! There's a stop on the way so we're hoping he'll be okay... Any suggestions? |

Other than that, health certificate just in case (you don't usually need it, but if they happen to ask and you don't have one they can stop you from flying), harness/leash/tags, toys for keeping him occupied, etc. The usual basics :) Oh and a blanket to keep him warm in the carrier, some planes can be drafty if you're near a vent! Thanks for the advice! I didn't even think of a health certificate! Man, if you pay 140 for him to fly, you'd think that would be enough! Also, I think if I'm paying $140 for him to fly, he should at least be out of his carrier and I be able to hold him! I know people have allergies but people have allergies to strong perfume too... Oh well. |
Good for you for not putting your little one in cargo. I just can't understand how anyone could possibly do that. Let us know how it goes. I've never flown with mine but have been thinking about it. I am terrified she will bark and annoy everyone. |
Sorry I really must brag, this is the first time I've ever seen anything cheaper in Canada, Westjet and AirCanada are both $50 for a dog in cabin, then they recommend you book a window seat in advanced cause they are bigger, so that's $7, a grand total of $57 plus tax. Not sure if either of those airlines run in the US... I was wondering if anyone had any tips, this will be Harley's first flight, and first extended period in his purse. |
