Airlines Does anyone happen to know who is the cheapest airline to take pets on? I'm going home to Cali for Christmas and I want to actually take my puppy on the plane with me. I absolutely will not put her in cargo. I'm a college student so on the broker side of things, lol, so I'm looking for the cheapest flight for me and Stormy. Thanks! |
I actually just googled this earlier tonight and it seems like it's pretty even across the board. All major airlines charge $75-80 one way if the dog is small enough to be a carry-on. Double check though, I'm not sure how current the info was. |
Try Southwest or JetBlue. Their pet fees are a little lower (but still high), and your checked bag is free. In my head, that helps even it out. |

AirTran is $69 each way but doesn't fly where I need to go :( |
Southwest is great. It only $75 + they do not require a health certificate from the vet. |
I just flew Southwest about a month ago when my Yorkie finished his AKC Championship and it was $75.00 for him to fly with me home. I got a Health Cert but they never asked for it.. He did great...:animal36 |
Southwest has the lowest pet fares. As well as if you do the math the cheapest fares.....no extra for luggage. They don't require health certificates and you can pay for your pet curb side. There are only a couple of Airlines that still require Health Certificates; it's really dependent on the laws of your destination city. The one problem with flying Southwest is if you're flying cross country or any distance.....you have a minimum of 1 layover and sometimes 2 with a possibility of plane change. Therefore you're extending your traveling time, hard on the dog. In other words a flight from Dallas to L.A is about 2 hours.....flying Southwest it's 5. |
Airline I agree, Southwest is the best for fares, and last Christmas we flew from Denver to San Francisco and the flight attendants were all dog lovers and let Bently out of his bag and he sat on my lap the entire flight. They kept coming back to our seat and seeing if Bently needed anything. I tried to get them to believe he likes champagne but it didn't work...... |
Southwest is BEST! We fly at least twice a year between Phoenix and Buffalo, NY. It's a 4 1/2 hour flight and Bella does awesome! We fly on Southwest. $75.00 each way and no luggage fee. It's worth it to know she is safe with us in the cabin. They have always been very welcoming. Just remember that you have to call ahead and register your dog for your flight as they limit the number of pets allowed on board. Good luck! |
Does Southwest usually allow pets to sit on your lap? Bc this is how I envisioned the flight, but one of my friends said they have to stay in their carrier and under the seat. I don't want to do that to her. My family is going to think I'm crazy, but I'd rather stay than put her through that! |

Southwest Southwest is great!!! My mom had no problems at all with bringing our puppy home. The fee was only $75 and they charge one-way (so if you have to switch plans to go one-way they don't charge you again, I know some airlines do that). The staff was excellent and she had a great experience. I highly recommend Southwest if you're going to fly with a pup in cabin! |
Delta is $125. each way and the dog must stay in the carrier under the seat. I have had some who let me hold him and one even walked around the plane with him showing him to people. If you have a Delta American Express card you don't have to pay for one bag each but you have to request it. |
Air tran is only 69$ each way. I've found they are the cheapest out there. Second would be Southwest at 75$. You must keep your little one under the seat. Doesnt really bother me too much cause as soon as i put Pasquale under there...he goes right to sleep! |
I just booked us a roundtrip flight to Myrtle Beach, SC from Buffalo, NY through Spirit Airlines. They had this outragous special going on because they were a new airline in Buffalo and I booked 4 roundtrip tickets for us for $250 total!! I also reserved for Bella, it was $100 each way for her. It will be $200 for her and $250 for all 4 of us! I'm also hoping that they will let me hold her and not just leave her under my seat. She will sit in a bag good when I'm carrying her but I'm not sure how she will be fully contained in a bag under my seat...I'm really afraid she will be a bit difficult and whiny or bark :( I'm thinking I'm gonna try to acclimate her to it gradually before our trip just in case. |
The rule on ALL airlines is that the dog must stay in their carrier the entire time... there are plenty of flight attendants who allow the rule to be broken- but you must be ready and prepared to keep them in the bag the whole time. I have never tried to take mine out- I feel like they are better off in the bag anyway- they are safer there- I have experienced rough flights and would be worried about a pet free during those conditions. Armani was in his carrier for about 10 hours once and he was just fine. I fly JetBlue and it is 100 each way- but I also get 300 extra points for the pets ticket. |
I flew Southwest 4 times with Kasha over the summer. It's super easy. $75 each way. They do have to stay in the carriers under the seat (although we did sit with her in our laps after she escaped) though I've had 1 flight attendant who let us keep the carrier in our lap. Jetblue was 125 I think. It's very easy and most people in the industry are very nice to you during the travel time. Just make sure to book asap because FAA regulations prohibit more than 4 dogs per aircraft and since its the holidays I'd guess there would be more than a few people wanting to bring their babies home. If you've already booked, make sure you call up a few days ahead of time to make sure the pup's reservation is good to go. Also, check to make sure they don't need health certificate( I just brought her medical records) |
I just checked recently because I wanted to take Annie with me on an overnight trip. I was flying Delta there ($125) and United AirWays ($100) on the way back -- and th told me her carrier would count as my carry-on and I would have to pay if I wanted to check my bag ($50 each way)!! Then the first hotel I called had a $50 pet deposit! So, it was going to cost me $375 just to take my little 2 pound dog with me on an overnight trip. She went to stay with my mom, needless to say! I thought it was ridiculous! I would not mind paying a nominal cost even though she would be taking up the same as any carry-on and weigh less than most, but that amounted to highway robbery! (Airway robbery?) I was told they could have no more than 2 pets on the plane. I thought that was odd too. Wonder why? Maybe the air would get too much pet dander for allergy sufferers? |

I'll add my endorsement for southwest also. When I picked up Gulliver and brought him back to Vegas from Orlando, we flew Southwest and loved it. He did have to stay under the seat during takeoff and landing, the flight attendants were pretty strict about that, but once we were in the air I put the tray table down and sat his carrier on it and unzipped it so I could stick my hand in. The attendants didn't act like they cared what he did during the flight so long as he didn't disturb the other passengers. |
We just booked tickets with Air Tran from Florida to Chicago for Christmas... To take Walt it was 70$ both ways... It was the cheapest my husband could find! Now we have the tickets and are hoping he'll fly well! There's a stop on the way so we're hoping he'll be okay... Any suggestions? |

I'd also bring some Nutrical if you don't think he'll eat during the trip (some dogs don't) to keep his blood sugar up. I'd also advise a collapsible or small drinking bowl. Other than that, health certificate just in case (you don't usually need it, but if they happen to ask and you don't have one they can stop you from flying), harness/leash/tags, toys for keeping him occupied, etc. The usual basics :) Oh and a blanket to keep him warm in the carrier, some planes can be drafty if you're near a vent! Good luck! Let us know how AirTran goes. I thought about flying Rylie home on them, but wasn't familiar so I went with Southwest instead! |
Thanks for the advice! I didn't even think of a health certificate! Man, if you pay 140 for him to fly, you'd think that would be enough! Also, I think if I'm paying $140 for him to fly, he should at least be out of his carrier and I be able to hold him! I know people have allergies but people have allergies to strong perfume too... Oh well. |
Good for you for not putting your little one in cargo. I just can't understand how anyone could possibly do that. Let us know how it goes. I've never flown with mine but have been thinking about it. I am terrified she will bark and annoy everyone. |
Sorry I really must brag, this is the first time I've ever seen anything cheaper in Canada, Westjet and AirCanada are both $50 for a dog in cabin, then they recommend you book a window seat in advanced cause they are bigger, so that's $7, a grand total of $57 plus tax. Not sure if either of those airlines run in the US... I was wondering if anyone had any tips, this will be Harley's first flight, and first extended period in his purse. |
